Software Development Environment Installation Guide

Software Installation Guide This step-by-step guide is meant to help teachers and students set up the necessary software development environment. By following this guide teachers will be able to create an environment that will allow them to demonstrate the process of creating and testing BlackBerry apps using Eclipse IDE and BlackBerry simulator. Overview In order to create the development environment, you will have to do the following 3 steps: 1. Register for free at BlackBerry Developer Zone 2. Download and install the BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse that includes Eclipse IDE 3. Download and install a BlackBerry Smartphone Simulator What is BlackBerry Developer Zone? The BlackBerry Developer Zone is a central place for developers to get tools, resources and information to develop, test and distribute for the BlackBerry Application Platform. Anyone can register to download free development tools and get access to customized resources. What is Eclipse and why do I need it? Eclipse is a software development environment comprising an integrated development environment (IDE) and an extensible plug-in system. Eclipse is the environment you need in order to create your programs. What is BlackBerry Java Plug-In and why do I need it? The BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse is an Eclipse plug-in that provides an integrated BlackBerry smartphone specific development, debugging and simulation workflow. The BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse has been updated to better fit within the Eclipse environment, making it easier to develop in Eclipse. How long will it take me to set it all up? Download time will depend on your internet connection speed. Total installation time for both components shouldn't be more than 10 minutes. Page 2 of 6
