It is dedicated to the study of the arts, sciences, and professional fields that serve the interests of the community of Lebanon and the Arab East. The University is committed to excellence in these fields and is forward-looking in the spirit of the 21st Century. Accordingly, the University holds the view that thought without application and relevance to human needs is incomplete. Conversely, practicality and applied knowledge not based on thought, tradition, morality, and spirit is lacking. The University is open to all; it does not discriminate on the basis of religion, race, sex, nationality, or physical disability. The University is administered by the President assisted by Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors, and other Officers. The President and his assistants are accountable to a Board of Trustees of 33 members. II- ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES AND EXAMINATIONS CRITERIA FOR ADMISSIONS The criteria for acceptance are the entrance examinations assigned by the University (SAT or other Exams), the secondaryschool grades, and the class rank. ADMISSIONS EXAMINATIONS SAT is required of all undergraduate applicants holding the Lebanese Baccalaureate, or its equivalence (IB, GCE, French Baccalaureate. ) Exempted from SAT are: Transfer students from other universities (who qualify for junior year admission). Applicants to majors in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences or ALBA. Applicants to majors taught in French. Students are responsible for registering for and taking the SAT. Applicants planning to enroll in the spring semester must take the SAT by the November testing session of the previous year. Applicants planning to enroll in the fall semester must take the SAT by the November testing session of the year before their planned enrollment. For students who take the SAT more than once, the University will use the highest score achieved in each section. Applicants to freshman class should: a- Hold a secondary school certificate based on 12 years of schooling, starting with Grade One. This certificate must be awarded by government or private schools and recognized by the Lebanese Ministry of Education and by the University. b- Obtain permission from the Equivalence Committee of the Lebanese Ministry of Education allowing them to pursue their higher education on the basis of a foreign program. c- Take, prior to their admission, the SAT. d- Take, either prior to their admission or during their Freshman year, SAT Subject Tests as follows: Students who choose the sciences track should take: Mathematics II (obligatory) plus two tests chosen from Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. Students who choose the arts track should take: Mathematics I (obligatory) plus any two tests. To be eligible for promotion to Sophomore Class the applicant should obtain a minimum cumulative total score (SAT + SAT Subject Tests) of: 2,750 for freshman sciences. 2,600 for freshman arts. When registering for the SAT, applicants to the University of Balamand should enter the UOB code 2960, and ask the Educational Testing Service to send the scores directly to the Office of Admissions & Registration. In reference to decree 9610, Official Gazette # 1, January 3, 2013, The Lebanese Ministry of Education offers a Maximum of 15 transfer credits towards the Freshman year for students who has taken the AP program at High schools within Lebanon. The University of Balamand, UOB, gives transfer credits for AP exams with grades of 3 and above. This may be done in any one of the following ways: Test Minimum Score Required TOEFL (Paper and Pencil), 527 TOEFL (ibt), 71 SAT (English writing section), 380 IELTS 5.5 Institutional Paper and Pencil TOEFL can be taken at UOB on published entrance exam dates at a cost of 135,000 L.L. (90 USD). For example, applicants who may choose to take the TOEFL / SAT tests must use the Institutional code number for UOB: 2960 when registering for the test. French Language Examination (French Majors only): Candidates must demonstrate a level of French language proficiency consistent with the requirements of their program of study. To ascertain this proficiency, the candidate must pass the French Entrance Examination as required by the concerned Faculty. The examination includes: a. balamand guide adm 2016-2017 new1new_layout 1 9/22/15 3:36 PM Page 3 APPLICATION PROCESS: Documents required 1- An application for undergraduate admission and a non-refundable application fee of 75 USD (113,000 L.L.). 2- The certificate or degree of completion of high school education recognized by the Ministry of Education in the originating country and the Lebanese Ministry of Education as well as the University. (All admission decisions are conditional upon evidence of students having submitted an authenticated copy of the certificate) 3- Grades for the two years of schooling prior to the year in which the student is submitting the application. Average and class rank are needed. School grades must be submitted by the school administration in sealed envelopes. 4- Photocopy of the applicant s identity card with a recent photo, and passport if available. 5- Three recent passport-size photos. *The attention of applicants is drawn to the following: 1. Applicants, regardless of the outcome of the application process, may not reclaim any of the documents mentioned above. 2. An application is valid only for the academic year for which a student has applied. 3. The name of the applicant will be recorded in University files as it appears on his/her identity card or passport. Deadlines for Applications For all majors (except ALBA-Sin El Fil): For Regular Admission to the spring 2015-2016, the deadline is December 11, 2015. For Early Admission to the fall 2016-2017, the deadline is December 18, 2015. For Regular Admission to the fall 2016-2017, the deadline is May 27, 2016. For all majors at ALBA-Sin El Fil: Submission of Applications: From February 22, 2016 till March 23, 2016 All applicants are urged to keep checking the University website (www.balamand.edu.lb) for any updates regarding the Admission Status and extended Deadlines for Applications. Early Admission To qualify for the early admission, students must fulfill the following: Submission of the application by December 18, 2015 Rank in the top 40% in each of the last two years of study prior to application SAT scores (last session is that of November) as follows: o 1,550 for Freshman o 1,650 for Sophomore Arts o 1,750 for Sophomore Sciences Decisions will be sent by January 15, 2016. Admission is conditional upon receiving the student s leaving certificate or high school diploma on the basis of which admission was sought. Students cannot register until all conditions are met. Applicants who are not granted early admission will be placed in the pool with regular admission applicants. Readmission Students in good standing who withdraw from the University voluntarily and who subsequently seek to return will be granted automatic readmission to their former program provided that they return no later than four regular semesters from the end of the session in which they withdrew. Transfer from other Universities Candidates transferring from recognized higher education institutions are eligible for consideration for admission subject to the following conditions: They hold the Lebanese Baccalaureate or its official equivalent. They had met the requirements for admission to the University of Balamand prior to their admission to the institution from which they are transferring. They have submitted their scores for the SAT, school and university grades, if they are qualified to the Sophomore year. Transfer applicants to the Junior or Senior years do not need to submit SAT scores. Transfer candidates may be given credit for courses satisfactorily completed in their previous institutions if these courses are comparable to UOB courses pending review by the relevant departments and faculties at UOB. Credits alone are transferred, not the grades. All transfer courses must be approved by the Admissions Committee. III- UNIVERSITY ORIENTATION PROGRAMS Intensive English Program The Intensive English Program is intended for applicants to the University of Balamand who have been selected for admission but have not met the English Language Proficiency Requirement. The Program consists of three levels: ENGL001, ENGL002 and ENGL003.
balamand guide adm 2016-2017 new1new_layout 1 9/22/15 3:36 PM Page 4 Students enrolled in ENGL001/002 are entitled to register for an additional 6 remedial credits if applicants received their high school education in the Arabic language. Students enrolled in ENGL003 may earn a maximum of 4 credits toward a degree while working towards achieving the level of English needed for carrying a full load in the regular program. Students who do not complete this Program within one or two semesters will forfeit their admission to the University. Special Orientation Program (SOP) The Remedial Program is designed to prepare students who had their secondary education outside Lebanon and those who obtained the appropriate Technical Baccalaureate for the major of their choice. Cases are studied individually and acceptances are issued upon the recommendation of the Admissions Committee. Students have a period of one year to finish this program. At the end of this year, they may be asked to sit for the required entrance examinations. IV- Admissions Criteria (Graduate) Admission Information Admission to a degree in the graduate programs is granted through the Office of Admissions and Registration, which receives and processes all applications, evaluates credentials, and issues notification letters. Standards under which students are admitted for study in these programs are established and monitored by the departments and Faculties concerned. Acceptance into the graduate program is based on the candidate meeting University admissions requirements and the recommendation of the Faculty Graduate Admission Committee. Admission Requirements Applicants to graduate studies must hold a Bachelor s degree from a recognized institution of higher learning with an undergraduate cumulative average of at least 80/100 or its equivalent as evaluated by the department the applicant wishes to join. The candidate s application should contain the following documents: A filled-out application form for graduate admission. Three recent passport-size photographs. A certified copy of the Lebanese Baccalaureate Certificate or its equivalent. A certified copy of the Bachelor degree and its equivalence. An equivalence of a Bachelor degree is obtained from the Lebanese Ministry of Higher Education. Official transcript(s) from the university(ies) attended, and the corresponding course descriptions. Two letters of recommendation. A non-refundable application fee of L.L.135,000. Acceptance into the graduate program is based on the recommendation of the Faculty Graduate Admission Committee. Conditional Admission An applicant may be admitted conditionally if he has undergraduate cumulative average of at least 75/100 or its equivalent as evaluated by the Department the applicant wishes to join. Language Proficiency Requirement Applicants to English-track majors, other than UOB graduates, are required to meet the English Language Proficiency Requirement (a minimum of 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, or 100 on the internet-based TOEFL). Applicants, who score in the range 527-597 on the paper-based TOEFL, or 71-99 on the internet-based TOEFL, are admitted but must complete the English Language courses (ENGL101/ENGL102) during the first year of enrollment in the graduate program. Applicants to French-track majors, other than UOB graduates, are required to meet the French language level FREN201 at UOB. A written entrance exam will determine the language level of the applicant. Applicants with FREN102 level may be accepted however they must complete successfully FREN102 within the first semester of enrollment in the graduate program. Graduate Student Credit Load Full-time students must enroll for at least 9 credit hours and a maximum of 15 credit hours. (See appropriate Faculty regulations) Part-time students are those who enroll for fewer than 9 credit hours. Transfer Credit Students transferring to the graduate programs may be granted transfer credits up to 40% of the total credits required of the degree including 20% as CBE (credit by exam). Students pay ¼ of the credit fee of the corresponding program type per faculty rate excluding any automatic support. Transferred credits apply only to courses in which the applicant had earned a minimum grade of 80 and equivalent in content to courses offered at UOB. The concerned Department/Faculty decides on the equivalency of courses. Readmission Students in good standing who break the continuity of their graduate programs for one year must seek readmission through the Office of Admissions and Registration.
balamand guide adm 2016-2017 new1new_layout 1 9/22/15 3:36 PM Page 5 Reactivation of Application Students admitted to the graduate program who do not enter in the semester for which they applied and subsequently wish to be considered for a later semester must reactivate their application for the new semester through the Office of Admissions and Registration. Undergraduate students Senior students may be permitted to register for some graduate courses based on their cumulative average. (See corresponding Faculty for more details). Prerequisites Each Department specifies the conditions for joining its graduate program (undergraduate prerequisite courses, language tests, and interviews). V- Record of Nationality The student's nationality as declared on the application form may not be changed after enrollment. Upon presentation of new legally valid documents, an acquired new nationality will be entered under "remarks" on the transcript of records only if the student meets the admission requirements of the University prior to the change of nationality. VI- Provisional Admission Applicants who do not meet University admission requirements, may be granted, upon the recommendation of the Admissions Committee, provisional acceptance. This acceptance continues until the end of the first regular semester. The admission will be final when the University admission requirements are fully met. VII- Academic advising Each Department provides its students with a faculty advisor who helps students select their courses and works out their academic programs in the context of the requirements of the Department and the interests and capabilities of the student. VIII- Transportation To facilitate transportation to and from the University, a bus commuting service has been established for students and faculty members. IX- Housing Dormitory buildings accommodating 95 male students and another accommodating 188 female students are available. Each dormitory has single, double, and triple rooms with shared kitchens and bathrooms. Reservations should be completed in July for the fall semester, in December for the spring semester, and in June for the summer semester. Reasonable rentals for students may also be found in nearby cities and villages. X- Financial Aid & Student Work Program Financial aid is given to qualified students whose financial situation cannot cover educational costs. University financial assistance may be in the form of either scholarships (partial or full), student work, or deferred payment of the tuition fees. Interested students should submit an application to the Office of Financial Aid. Financial aid will be granted to students who: 1. Are enrolled as regular students 2. Have a good academic record 3. Are in financial need 4. Are not on disciplinary probation - Continuing students who are interested in applying for financial aid for the next academic year should apply by first of May. - New students may also apply for financial aid. They should submit the application by end of September (if joining UOB in the Fall semester), or by end of February (if joining UOB in the Spring semester) - Deferred payment is handled during the registration process. - Student work opportunities are available on campus with jobs varying from clerical work to laboratory and library assistance. Student work applications should be completed and submitted to the Office of Student Affairs at the end of each semester. New students are not eligible for student work. XI- Sibling Grant A Sibling Grant is given when two or more brothers and/or sisters are registered at the University of Balamand. No application is needed to qualify for this grant. XII- Undergraduate Merit Scholarship Full-time undergraduate students who demonstrate academic excellence by achieving a semester general average of at least 85 out of 100 are eligible for a merit scholarship.
