2 UNIVERSITY OF BALAMAND FINANCIAL AID PROGRAM The University of Balamand offers partial or full financial aid to eligible students whose financial situation cannot cover educational costs. In , financial aid totaled $ 8,775,534: $ 7,280,563 in direct aid and $ 1,494,971 in the form of graduate assistantships and student work. Types of Financial Aid Application Procedure Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Financial Aid : Facts and Figures Contact us TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID Financial aid is offered to undergraduate students in the form of need scholarships, merit scholarships, scholarship support, sibling grant, student work, and deferred payment. Graduate students are eligible to apply for graduate assistantships. Need Scholarships Need scholarships are grants of assistance awarded to academicallyqualified undergraduate full-time students who demonstrate a financial need. Financial assistance ranges from small grants to full tuition support. Application forms may be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid. Selection is made on the basis of need, and academic performance. Eighty four percent of students who applied for Need Scholarships in were awarded a scholarship.
3 Merit Scholarships I- Students with outstanding academic qualifications are eligible for the full merit scholarships. Full merit scholarships are awarded yearly to: a. Newly admitted applicants who rank first and second in the Lebanese Baccalaureate official exams in each Muhafaza. b. The top four newly admitted applicants who scored 2000 or above on the SAT and rank in the top 25% in each of the last two years of schooling. The above scholarships are renewable at the beginning of each academic year provided the recipients score a cumulative average of 85 or above. c. MED I applicant who ranks first among all applicants to medical school. d. Continuing students who rank first at the end of MED I, MED II and MED III. e. The top four undergraduate students who have completed the semester with an average of 95 or above and who will be continuing their undergraduate studies will receive a full tuition scholarship for the upcoming Fall or Spring semester. II- Students with excellent academic qualifications are eligible for the Seventy five percent merit scholarships. Seventy five percent scholarships are awarded yearly to: a. Newly admitted applicants who rank third in the Lebanese Baccalaureate official exams in each Muhafaza. b. The top six newly admitted applicants who scored 1900 or above on the SAT and rank in the top 25% in each of the last two years of schooling.the above scholarships are renewable for each academic year provided the recipients maintain a cumulative average of 83 or above. III- Students with good academic qualifications are eligible for the fifty percent merit scholarships. Fifty percent scholarships are awarded yearly to: a. Newly admitted applicants who rank fourth and fifth in the Lebanese Baccalaureate official exams in each Muhafaza. b. The top eight newly admitted applicants who scored 1750 or above on the SAT and rank in the top 25% in each of the last two years of schooling. The above scholarships are renewable for each academic year provided the recipients maintain a cumulative average of 80 or above.
4 c. Continuing medical students who rank second and third at the end of MED I, MED II, and MED III. IV- Continuing full time undergraduate students who demonstrate academic excellence by obtaining an average of 85 or above for the semester are eligible for a merit scholarship which will be announced by the University at the end of each semester. V- Continuing medical students who rank fourth till thirteenth at the end of MED I, MED II and MED III, are eligible for twenty five percent merit scholarships. Please note that no application is required for the merit scholarship. Scholarship Support Most Faculties at the University of Balamand offer scholarship support for students with good academic standing: Undergraduate scholarship Graduate scholarship Faculty of Arts and 25% 50% Social Sciences Faculty of Health 30% Sciences* 100% for top six students majoring in Nursing (Main campus) Faculty of Sciences 50% for top five students majoring in either Mathematics or Environmental Sciences Faculty of Business 40% for top two applicants 30% to 60% for top eight and Management** 30% for 3rd, 4th and 5th ranked students applicants 25% for 6th through 10th ranked applicants * Except Medical Laboratory Sciences students and Nutritional Sciences students. ** Except Undergraduate Business Administration students. Please note that no application is required for the scholarship support.
5 Sibling Grant Student Work When two or more siblings are enrolled at UOB, they are entitled to a fee reduction. The second sibling is awarded 7.5%, and the third sibling is awarded 12.5% reduction. No application is needed to qualify for this grant. Student Work compensation is a financial aid program that allows fulltime undergraduate students to work on campus and contribute to their educational expenses. Placement is made on the basis of academic record, capability, need and job availability. To qualify, the applicant must fulfill the following criteria: 1. Enrollment in a degree program at the time of application, with a minimum of 12 credits for the Fall and Spring semesters and a minimum of 6 credits for the Summer semester. 2. Good academic record. 3. A demonstrated potential in extra-curricular activities. Students may work a maximum of fifteen hours per week. Students are compensated in the form of tuition reduction at a rate of LBP 9000 per hour. Student work opportunities are available on campus with jobs varying from clerical work to laboratory and library assistance. Studentwork applications should be completed and submitted online at the following link: at the end of each semester. New students are not eligible for student work. Deferred Payment Deferred payment is handled during the registration process through the Comptroller s Office. (Monthly installments with 0 % interest)
6 Graduate Assistantships Students can earn financial support through the Graduate Assistantship Program. Applications to this Program are submitted through the respective Faculties and reviewed before the start of each academic semester. Selected students are allocated a certain number of hours per week to work in one of the following categories: 1. Teaching Assistant 2. Graduate Assistant 3. Research Assistant 4. Technical Assistant Normally, these assistantships cover from 20% to 50% of the tuition fees. However, the number of these assistantships and the number of hours assigned per week will depend on: The fund allocated by the University The academic merit of the applicants The availability of positions with faculty members and technical centers. APPLICATION PROCEDURE (For Need Scholarship and Student Work) Students should submit an application for financial aid to the Office of Financial Aid and/or an online application through the following link: In order to qualify, students should: 1. Be enrolled as regular students 2. Have a good academic record 3. Be in financial need 4. Not on disciplinary probation Continuing students who are interested in applying for financial aid for the next academic year should apply by mid May. New students may also apply for financial aid. They should submit the application by mid October (if joining UOB in the Fall semester), or by mid March (if joining UOB in the Spring semester).

In , 1359 undergraduate students received financial aid in the form of scholarships, ranging from $1380 to full tuition. The average scholarship awarded was $ Q. What criteria are used to award a scholarship? A. Selection is based on two criteria: need and academic performance. Need is assessed yearly through a number of factors: family income, number of dependants, number of siblings enrolled in schools /universities, assets such as home(s), car(s), and other property(ies). A social worker will pay a visit to all new students living in Lebanon as part of this assessment process. Decisions are made by the University Financial Aid Committee using the application for financial aid completed by the student. Students with low need or low academic performance are less likely to receive aid. Q. How and when to apply for a scholarship? A. Applications may be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid and should be submitted by the applicant according to the following schedule: - Mid October for new applicants joining Balamand in the Fall semester. - Mid March for new applicants joining Balamand in the Spring semester. - Mid May for continuing students. Q. How do I apply for a Merit Scholarship? A. No application is needed. Merit scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement only. Q. How do I apply for a Support Scholarship? A. No application is needed. The applicant s major determines the awarded Support Scholarships. Q. How do I apply for the Student Work Program? A. The program is administered by the Office of Student Affairs. At the end of each semester, full-time student should submit an online application at the following link: Q. The program is administered by the Office of the Dean of the Faculty to which the student is applying; the student should meet the deadlines set by that Faculty. Q.
