1 Bachelor of Science Bachelor of Science All students entering the Bachelor of Science degree program at the Thompson Rivers University enroll in a TRU degree program. TRU offers two routes to a Bachelor of Science degree: A Major in a specific discipline or a General Science degree. Both types of degree provide students with a broad yet rigorous education in Sciences. Major Programs Students wishing specialization in a single field of science can complete a BSc Major degree program in the following areas: Animal Biology, Ecology and Environmental Biology, Biology, Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology, Chemical Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Computing Science, Mathematics, Mathematical Sciences and Physics. Double Majors in two different disciplines are also possible. An Honours program in Biology and Chemical Biology, leading to further specialization, is also available. Students in a Biology, Chemical Biology, Computing Science or Mathematics Major program may apply for admission to the Honours program at the end of their third year. Completion of Majors programs provide the course requirements for entry into post graduate study in specific disciplines. Courses available in the Major program also meet the course requirements for entry into: Faculty of Dentistry (UBC and most others) Faculty of Medicine (UBC and most others) Veterinary Medicine (U of Saskatchewan) Chiropractic Naturopathic Medicine Optometry Faculty of Law (UBC and most others) Business Administration - MBA (UBC and most others) Completion of course requirements does not guarantee admission into any of these programs. Please contact Dr. Eric Littley, BSc Advisor at for more information.
2 Co-operative Education Programs Students planning to take a Major program in Biology, Chemistry, Computing Science, Mathematics or Physics may apply to enter the Co-operative Education option in one of these areas. This option integrates academic study terms with paid work terms, providing the student with relevant experience in their field of study, and usually requires an additional year for completion of the degree program. Applications to enter the Co-op option are made early in the student's second or third year of study and work terms normally commence at the end of that year. Details regarding Co-op Education programs are found in the TRU calendar - Minor Programs Students in Major programs may also take a Minor program in an area different from their Major. Minor programs are available in Biology, Chemistry, Computing Science, Mathematics, and Physics. Students in Major programs in Science may also pursue a Minor in Management or in a variety of Arts disciplines. A minor requires completion of at least 30 credits in one of these disciplines, of which at least 18 credits must be upper level. A minor in Chemistry requires that at least one (1) of these upper level credits be in a laboratory course. Minors in some disciplines may have more specific requirements. More information is available from the B Sc Program Advisor. General Science Degree Program The general science program (as distinct from a major) gives students the opportunity to concentrate, in third and fourth years, in two or more of the following areas: Biology Chemistry Computing Science Earth Sciences (Geology, Physical Geography) Mathematics Physics The goal of this degree program is to give students flexibility in their choice of career opportunities. Graduates should be particularly well prepared to apply for entry into a BEd Secondary degree program to qualify for teaching in BC secondary schools. Courses available in the general science program, just as in the major program, meet the course requirements for entry in Dentistry, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Chiropractic, Naturopathic Medicine, Optometry, Law and Business Administration. Completion of course requirements does not guarantee admission into any of these programs. Please contact the BSc Program Advisor at TRU for more information.
3 Admission Requirements For students new to TRU or attending TRU outside of the Science program, admission to the Science degree program requires a separate application be sent to the Admissions Department at TRU on or before March 1, Late applications will be considered only if there is space available.
