2011 was a strong year for job opportunities across all sectors of the German market. As professionals became less cautious about moving jobs, we witnessed a significant increase in movement in quarter one. Both blue-chip companies and SMEs were recruiting in significant volumes, which resulted in competition for top talent intensifying and the hiring market becoming increasingly candidate driven. Shortages at the middle management level were particularly marked, which led to increased salaries for these professionals. This rise in opportunities for high performers injected a positive dynamic to the recruitment market across Germany. Firms recruited professionals predominantly for front office positions, such as account and sales managers. However, we still saw notable demand from corporate functions, such as finance, IT and HR. Organisations also invested in their marketing and business development teams and added headcount in these areas. Employers became increasingly flexible when hiring candidates. In previous years, companies sought professionals with relevant sector experience and a CV that matched 90-95% of each position s requirements. In 2011, we saw a growing tendency for candidates with less relevant sector backgrounds to be invited for interview. Bonuses were increasingly offered as part of the overall compensation package, a trend we anticipate to continue into 2012. Growth in the banking sector slowed, impacted by the Eurozone financial crisis and we anticipate that salaries across the industry will decrease in 2012. As competition for talent in most sectors increases, organisations will need to actively explore how they can best retain their top performers. Environmental protection policies and corporate social responsibility activities are becoming increasingly key factors for candidates seeking new jobs.
