Ex Machina - ZULU TIME 1999 VERSION Technical specifications and requirements (preliminary version) 1. Venue and seating Audience sits on both sides of performing area. First five (5) rows of seats must be on floor level. All other seats should be set in staggered rows and allow for good sightlines. Staggered rows steps height: minimum: 0.15m (6 ) maximum: 0.25m (10 ) First rows on both sides must be at 3m (10 ) from the set. Required surface (performing area + seating): depth: 35m (115 ) width: 18m (59 ) Required height: 11m. (36 ) Maximum audience: approx. 600 (up to 300 on each side). 2. Stage and set Masking will be hung so to delimit the totality of the performing and seating surface (a plan will be provided). Masking must be set up prior to the company s arrival. Wing space (at least 2 m (6.5 ) wide) is required outside the performing and seating surface, on all 4 sides. Quick change surfaces (3m x 3m (10 x 10 ) each), delimited by masking or otherwise, should be available outside the performing and seating surface, on both sides, not farther than 6m from the set structure. A rectangular structure made of aluminum trusses (length: 18m (60 ) width: 14m (46 ) height: 0.56 m (22 )) will be hung to the grid on 8 manual chain blocks. The company will provide structure chain blocks. Loading capacity of each of the 8 rigging points should be of 2000 kg (2 t) each. If venue s grid is higher than 24.3m (79 ), presenter must supply six 1 ton motors and two 2 tons motors, or dead rigging points and lines of proper length and gauge. 1
Set (provided by the company) consists of the following elements: 2 aluminum towers: width: 1.8m (6 ) depth: 3.2m (10 ) height: 8.34m (27 5 ) Both towers are seated on steel I-beam bases. At ground level, towers are separated by a catwalk : length: 10m (30 ) width: 2.4m (8 ) height: 1.07m (42 ) A box truss also links both towers at the top : length: 10m (30 ) width: 0.6m (2 ) height: 0.6m (2 ) Two mobile platforms also occupy the space between the towers (length: 10m (30 )). Total weight of set: 7500 kg (7.5 t), approx. Required capacity of stage floor: 600 kg per square metre underneath towers 200 kg per square metre between towers Presenter must provide a personal lift of appropriate height. A soundproof room in which 3 air compressors will be running during performance should be available within 15m (50 ) from the set. 3. Power feeds Set (Europe): One 50A 3 phases 220/380 VAC disconnect which will feed a 15 KVA transformer with #2 awg bare wires which supplies 4 3HP 230 VAC motors 1 2HP 180VDC motor 4 1/6 HP 208 VAC motors One 15A 220/380 VAC which supplies 1 air compressor One 10A 220 VAC which supplies 1 90VDC motor Two 10A 220 VAC which supply controlling computers Set (North America) : One 75A 3 phases 120/208 VAC disconnect which will feed a 15 KVA transformer with #2 awg bare wires which supplies 4 3HP 230 VAC motors 1 2HP 180VDC motor 4 1/6 HP 208 VAC motors One 15A 120/208 VAC which supplies 1 air compressor One 15A 120 VAC which supplies 1 90VDC motor Two 15A 120 VAC which supply controlling computers A local electrician must be available on first day of set-up and after last performance to connect/disconnect the power feeds. Power sources should be no farther than 8m (25 ) from the set (unless presenter provides extra power lines). 2
Lighting: Dimmer packs: One 220 V / 380 V - 3 phases disconnect proper amperage. Moving lights power transformer (ditro): One 125 amp. 220 V / 380 V - 3 phases disconnect. One 220 V phase, neutral and ground connectors will be used. Company provides cam-lock tails from transformer. Sound: Four 10A 220 VAC which will supply audio mixing equipments provided by company. Two 10A 220 VAC which will supply musical instruments. One 10A 220 VAC whcih will supply sampler under the cat walk. Power feeds for sound should be independent from other power feeds, and supply the two musicians and video equipment. Projections: Two 10A 220 VAC which will supply control computers Four 10A 220 VAC which will supply video and slide projectors. Power feeds for projections should be the same as the sound feed. 4. Lighting Dimmers : 60 x 1.2 KW 60 x 2.4 KW or 120 x 2.4 KW 1 standard back-up lighting board (200 cue memory with soft patch / manual cross-faders / 12 manual sub-masters / 1 video monitor / 1 3.5 floppy disk slut) All dimmer racks must be equipped with a Socapex output, unless presenter provides a Socapex fan out. All dimmer racks must be compatible with the USITT DMX 512 (1990) protocol. Company will provide a Compulite lighting board. 3
Instruments : 26 lekos 36 (ETC Source 4 with 7.5 frames company will provide color changers). 16 varifocal lekos 18 /30 (ETC Source 4 zoom or Strand or Robert Juliat, with 7.5 frames company will provide color changers). 10 2 KW fresnels (Strand or Robert Juliat, with 10 frames company will provide color changers). 16 2 KW fresnels (house lights for the audience) 10 PAR 64 black (medium flood) 10 Mini-PC 300 W (plano-convex) 12 backstage clip lights (40 w or less blue bulbs). or equivalent instruments (after approval from company s technical director). Presenter must provide Socapex connectors and all connecting cables (a list will be provided). Hardware : 2 metal pipes matching structure s height (8,4m) which will be set vertically on both sides of the structure (at a distance of 2m), in order to hang sidelights. 5. Sound Sound system 12 Meyer or Array cabinet models with proper rigging kit 4 sub-woofers 4 (2 x 31 bands)klark Teknik equalizers or equivalent equipment (after approval from company s technical director). F.O.H (1 stereo mix) : left / right, on both sides of the stage, attached to 8 PIECES company s grid. The speakers must be stacked in pairs (one on top of the other). Surround (4 mixes) : 4 PIECES Sub (2 mixes) : each 4 PIECES 2 behind each seating rake. The sub-woofers will be set on the ground, in front of towers. The subs and the tops must be fed from separated sources. Adjustments of diffusion angles should be possible. 4

All intercom stations will operate on the same channel (wired and wireless). A live telephone line must be available and will be used on stage during performance. 5
6. Projections Company brings his own equipment : 5 LCD video projectors 4 slide projectors control equipment, cables, stands, etc. To be provided by presenter : 2 VHS VCRs with remote controls (to be used as TV tuners) 1 cable TV feed on stage or 2 TV tuners with video outputs 7. Special effects Audience must be informed that stroboscopes are used during performance. A video installation will be set in venue s lobby. Required surface: 10 x 6 3m x 1.8m 8. Costumes / Properties 2 tables for props (1m x 2m 3 x 6, approx.) 2 tables for make-up and wigs (1m x 1m 3 x 3, approx.) 4 portable costume racks 1 curler for synthetic wigs 1 iron + ironing board Access (within venue) to washing and drying machines Washing machine soap 9. Freight Company s cargo is contained in transportation crates, stacks and racks. Presenter should provide storage space for empty crates during show s run. Company will eventually provide presenter with a detailed list of crates measurements and weight. 6
10. Technical crews Local set-up and strike crew: 10 stagehands/truck loaders 1 head electrician 4 electricians (lights) 1 electrician (projections + motors) 1 fly man (rig) 1 head soundman 1 sound technician 1 wardrobe/wig maintenance person Seating, masking and rigging points should be set/rigged prior to the arrival of the company s technical crew. If such is not the case, the staff required for those tasks should be added to the above list. (during set-up day 3) Local running crew: 3 stagehands 1 head electrician 1 head soundman 1 wardrobe Company s technicians will operate lighting and sound boards during rehearsals and performances. Local running crew must be the same for rehearsals and performances. Stagehands must dress in black (with long sleeves) during performances. Laundry should be done on days 1 and 2 of set-up and before each performance, and should be completed 2 hours before show time on performing days. Wig touch-ups must be done before each performance. Last part of strike and truck loading will take place on the day following the last performance (3 x 4 hours shifts). Performance will last approximately 2.5 hours. Company will eventually provide a detailed set-up, performing and strike schedule. Safety/fire inspections should take place on evening of day 3 or on morning of day 4 (advance notice is essential). 8
12. Dressing rooms / catering Company needs: 1 dressing room for 3 women 1 dressing room for 3 men 1 dressing for costumes and wigs maintenance 1 dressing room for the technical crew 1 dressing room which will be used as a production office and which should be equipped with a door lock, a desk and a telephone line. All dressing rooms must be equipped with make-up tables, chairs, mirrors, costume racks, hot and cold water, toilets and showers. Presenter should provide touring company with bottled water, fruit juices, coffee and soft drink starting on first day of set-up and ending with the departure of the company s technical crew. Presenter should inform company s production manager in advance about inhouse canteen or cafeteria facilities.
