Your high school graduation is an exciting time. A time of endings, but more importantly, a time of beginnings. New experiences. New adventures. New opportunities. The decisions you make in the coming weeks and months will speak to who you are today and begin to lay the groundwork for who you will be tomorrow. This is your time. But your time also coincides with a pivotal period in history, and nowhere is this more evident than in healthcare. Projected nurse and physician shortages and a larger, increasingly diverse population requiring more chronic care, represent the greatest challenges to the U.S. healthcare system in more than fifty years.* A lack of quality care to meet these challenges will impact everyone, in every neighborhood, across the nation you, your friends, your family... everyone. In addition, dramatic advances in healthcare and technology and rising costs and regulations will also require a constantly evolving healthcare education system to transform students, like you, into the highly-skilled healthcare providers of tomorrow. At over three million strong, nurses make up the largest segment of the nation s healthcare workforce** and, as part of this extraordinary profession, you can play a significant role in confronting these issues and transforming healthcare. As a nurse, you will be serving society and have the opportunity to improve lives. What could be better than that? You can make a difference. Susan L. Groenwald, PhD(c), MSN President Chamberlain College of Nursing * Health Affairs, July/August 2009 ** The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), October 5, 2010 chamberlain.edu/makeadifference HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT VIEWBOOK 2013-2014 6

Simulated care Experiential learning real-world experience 11 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT VIEWBOOK 2013-2014

Experiential learning: 800 hours of practice As a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree student, you will take part in approximately 800 hours of experiential learning (simulated learning, skills labs and clinicals)* before being faced with independent, direct patient care or a patient crisis. This extensive training allows you to build confidence so that your reactions become almost innate. Nursing skills labs & the SIMCARE CENTER : Life-saving skills taught in a safe environment The SIMCARE CENTER replicates hospital and clinical settings and features high-tech training equipment, including high-fidelity human simulators, patient-monitoring equipment, a birthing simulator and physical assessment exam tables. Utilizing the computer control center, Chamberlain faculty have the ability to alter the simulated patient s conditions and produce varying symptoms to evaluate your responses in real time. Clinicals: Your first entry into a real healthcare environment Clinicals educate you in real-world healthcare settings under the supervision of a professional nurse. Clinical experiences take place in a variety of settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, independent practices, ambulatory care centers, VA medical centers and home health environments anywhere healthcare is delivered! Finding clinical assignments Unlike many programs, you will not be solely responsible for finding clinical assignments. Our centralized coordination and national compliance staff will facilitate scheduling, requirements and the entire clinical process. * Based on the Chamberlain Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree curriculum, totaling both lab and clinical requirements. chamberlain.edu/simcare chamberlain.edu/simcarecenter

chamberlain faculty We are with you every step of the way Learning versus teaching The faculty members of Chamberlain College of Nursing understand the range of emotion that comes from being a student of a demanding profession; this is why the Chamberlain faculty and curriculum emphasize learning over teaching there is a difference. In other disciplines, very often the focus is on learning fast and moving on. That is not a nursing education model. At Chamberlain, our students are evaluated on their ability to analyze, synthesize and apply the information they have learned. The professors are great. They have incredible experiences to share and genuinely care for their students. Nora, BSN Student, Addison Campus small class sizes, individualized instruction & faculty who care Chamberlain students can count on a faculty of practicing nurses and professional educators who stay up-to-date on healthcare practices, principles and technology. Chamberlain professors are professional educators who provide individualized instruction and genuinely care for their students. Our faculty continuously monitor student progress and take the necessary steps to ensure that material is understood rather than memorized. Chamberlain facilitates this by maintaining small class sizes. 13 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT VIEWBOOK 2013-2014

Venture beyond the classroom Chamberlain Care, our value system, runs through the core of our entire institution and is ingrained in all we do. Chamberlain Care acknowledges that you cannot instill the compassion and selflessness required of a nursing professional without leading by example and demonstrating those same values in your own community. By providing you the opportunity to expand your educational and professional horizons, we continue our commitment to making a difference not only in your life, but also in the communities where we live and work, in healthcare as a whole, and in the world at large. The experience of a lifetime As a Chamberlain student, you have the opportunity to participate in International Nursing Service Projects in Bolivia, Brazil and other countries. These immersion experiences will give you the opportunity to practice your nursing skills while gaining a deeper understanding of cultural and economic differences across the globe. Projects can be done in place of the Community Health Nursing International and Multiculturalism in Healthcare Special Populations course requirements; this allows you to receive course credit and continue on your path to earning a degree while taking part in an experience of a lifetime. 2013 Partnering with other healthcare professionals As an extension of the International Nursing Service Project, Chamberlain joined forces with Ross University School of Medicine to serve the people of Kenya. The Interprofessional Global Service Project holds special significance, not just for the care and services provided to a population in need of healthcare, but for the partnership it demonstrates between two healthcare professions. Chamberlain recognizes that the need for interdisciplinary collaboration is consistent with what our students will experience in the healthcare delivery environment, and we are actively seeking opportunities to promote this ideal in our curriculum, coursework and student experiences. chamberlain.edu/serviceprojects chamberlain.edu/insp
