Success Stories Ellen Sabo Bachelor of Psychological Science The sky is the limit Learning how people think, feel and behave has always fascinated me. Studying psychology was a way for me to better understand what makes people tick and why they do the things they do. As a member of the university s Psych Society, I have been given the opportunity to network with some great people and I travelled to various exhibitions in Melbourne. I also often attend Psychology Colloquiums which are facilitated by FedUni, where I have learnt about current research and specialist areas. When choosing where I wanted to study, I liked the idea of coming to a regional university and not living in the city. Ballarat is just the right size not big enough to get lost whilst offering all the major shops and services I need. I also liked the idea of small class sizes and not just feeling like a number. In regards to career goals, the sky is the limit for me! I m hoping to continue onto Honours, Masters and upgrade to a Clinical Doctorate. This will give me the capacity to continue in research, which I love, and perform clinical work. I could see myself one day becoming an academic and lecturing all over the world. Some advice to future students (year 12 or older) is that coming back to uni as a mature age student was daunting, but now I am here I wonder what took me so long! It has been great finding like-minded students, with a thirst for knowledge and being able to share ideas with them. Success Stories Emma West Bachelor of Arts (Humanities and Social Sciences) I chose to study here after attending an open day information session at Mt Helen. I d already heard good things about this university from other people which made it a really easy decision. The BA program so far has been fantastic, I couldn t ask for anything more. I have been able to follow a variety of my interests in different areas such as psychology, film, literature, history, philosophy and sociology. The student careers and employment service have even helped me plan for my career after graduation. Making the transition to university can definitely be difficult, especially if you re living away from home. It really helps to have a friend or two and O-Week is the perfect opportunity to meet people in the same boat as you! Personally, the university s Mentor Program really helped me get through my first year- the things you learn during the O-Week activities on campus are invaluable. In fact, at accreditation in 2010, I gained an outstanding achievement categorisation with my colleague, Jackie Crowe, the family/carer consultant. I was enrolled at a large metropolitan university and I didn t enjoy it. I was in a class of 500 students; I never met a single lecturer, found it incredibly hard to get assistance and even make friends. The next year I enrolled at the university in Ballarat. At Ballarat I can remember my first lecture; it had about 150 students in it. I looked around and thought where is everyone?, that first year I knew every one of my lecturers personally and they knew me by name. That s why I chose this university because it is a fantastic regional uni and you don t get lost in the crowd. The highlights of my undergraduate degree were definitely the teaching staff and the friends I made. The lecturers were insightful and entertaining, they made me laugh a lot. Other Study Options Short Course Introduction to Basic Counselling This diploma-level qualification trains you in the theoretical approach of a range of counselling skills. Areas covered include working with client strengths, reflecting client affect, exploring underlying issues, and working with client resistance. This nationally accredited qualification may assist you in your work in the field of human services. This short course consists of one subject: Facilitate the counselling relationship. Bachelor of Community Welfare and Counselling This degree develops skills and knowledge for intervention across a range of practice fields, including (but not limited to): counselling, child protection, disability, family support, homelessness, community corrections, youth justice, community development, aged care, family violence, research and policy analysis. The study includes case management and human services practice from a management perspective. Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Community Welfare and Counselling This combined qualification allows you to gain a recognised welfare qualification while exploring the breadth of studies offered through the arts and social sciences degree. This degree develops skills for intervention across a range of fields. Case management and human services practice from a management perspective is also studied. This study is complemented by focused major and minor studies from arts and social sciences. Bachelor of Arts (Criminal Justice) This degree provides you with the knowledge and skills required to better understand crime, crime prevention and the criminal justice process, and to analyse and evaluate traditional, innovative and radical alternatives for dealing with crime. You will compare and contrast regional, rural and urban crime, and evaluate policies which are designed to prevent crime. You will also study public safety, forensic psychology, causes of deviant behaviour, and securityrelated issues. As a graduate you may work in fields such as police services (state and federal), courts, corrections, government departments, private security firms, crime commissions, law reform commissions and roles within the Office of the Ombudsman. Bachelor of Arts (Honours) This is a fourth-year program that often serves as a prelude to a higher degree in research or a professional qualification. Honours students focus on an area of interest, usually in the discipline/s in which they have majored. Within the multidisciplinary Honours degree, studies in literature, film, cultural studies, historical and heritage studies, philosophy, rural social welfare and social sciences are offered. The program involves four coursework subjects plus a dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words. Honours graduates are highly valued for research work (academic and professional), and are especially prepared for a higher degree by research such as a PhD. It examines contemporary issues in criminal justice, criminal justice practice and reform, managing criminal justice issues and researching criminal justice. It specifically focuses on working with diverse communities in historical and political contexts. The qualification provides an overview of local, national and international issues in criminal justice policy and practice.
