Staff and volunteer are the glue that holds the camp program together. Whether you are a trained den leader, a parent volunteer, a Boy Scout or Venturer, you are helping us make this day camp possible. Your guidance will ensure that the Scouts enjoy all of the activities offered by our camp. Cub Scout Day Camp provides a wonderful opportunity for all Cubs to continue the Scouting program during the summer. Their participations strengthen the Cubs connection to Scouting and increase the likelihood of staying within the Scouting program. We appreciate your giving your time and effort toward this purpose. CAMP DIRECTOR The day camp director shall be an adult 21 years of age or older of well-known good character and ability. In addition to being certified at National Camping School for administration or management, the camp director shall: Be responsible to the day camp administrator Oversee budget and program materials Supervise the personnel and operating details of the camp Recruit, interview and train staff Conduct training in coordination with the program director Maintain National standards for leadership, program activities and health and safety Provide backup to activity leaders Have a Plan B Be a role model of the 12 Character Traits Evaluate and recruit leadership for 2013 PROGRAM DIRECTOR The program director shall be an adult of 21 years of age or older of well-known character and ability. This volunteer has on site responsibility for the Cub Scout day camp program. In addition to being certified at National Camping School the day camp program director shall: HEALTH OFFICER Coordinate with the camp director Promote day camp attendance at roundtables, pack meetings and events Assist with supervision and trainings of staff Assist staff in planning and conducting successful day to day activities Evaluate program and identify potential 2013 leadership The on-site health officer is a responsible adult holding a current certification required for the position (First Aid). This person must also have a current certification in CPR. The camp health officer must be available at the day camp first aid station from 8:45AM until 4:00PM each day. If the health officer is out of camp another adult with first-aid training must be available. CRAFT DIRECTOR The craft director shall be an adult 18 years of age or older with demonstrated ability to work with and instruct crafts. The craft director shall: STAFF HANDBOOK Page 3

Be responsible to the program director Plan and carry out a theme related craft program Select crafts that enhance the theme Teach skills necessary to carry out the activity Supervise the use and storage of materials and equipment Evaluate the program and identify potential leadership for 2013 RANGE SAFETY OFFICER The range officer runs the archery, BB, and/or other ranges. This adult must be at least 18 years of age and have been trained as outlines in Shooting Sports for Cub Scouts, Webelos Scouts and Parents, NO. 13-550. The range safety officer must provide certification specific to this activity. FIELD SPORTS The field sports instructor shall be an adult 18 years of age or older with demonstrated ability to work with youth and shall: NATURE PROGRAM Be responsible to the program director Identify opportunities for scouts to earn belt loops and pins Plan and carry out a theme related sports program Select sports that enhance the theme Teach skills necessary to carry out the activity Supervise the use and storage of materials and equipment Evaluate the program and identify potential 2013 leadership The nature program instructor shall be an adult 18 years of age or older with demonstrated ability to work with youth and shall: Be responsible to the program director Identify opportunities for scouts to earn belt loops and pins Plan and carry out a them related nature program Select activities that enhance the theme Teach skills necessary to carry out the activity Supervise the use and storage of materials and equipment Evaluate the program and identify potential 2013 leadership DEN/WALKING LEADERS The den/walking leaders shall be an adult 21 years of age of older, of mature judgment with the ability to exert strong leadership. The den/walking leader shall: Be responsible to the camp director STAFF HANDBOOK Page 4

DEN CHIEF shall: Assist with program at each activity station Promote and maintain 12 character elements within the group Ensure camper safety. Ensure each camper leaves only with his parent or guardian Evaluate program for 2012 The den chief shall be a Boy Scout or Venturer capable of serving as a den chief. He or she PROGRAM AIDE Be responsible to their den leader Help the program leaders carry out duties as assigned Evaluate 2012 program activities Identify scouts who demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the program The program aide shall be a capable Life or Eagle Scout or Venturer at least 14 years of age and able to demonstrate and teach skills to the camp day program. Be responsible to program director Teach skills necessary to carry out the activity Supervise the use and storage of materials and equipment Help the program leaders carry out duties as assigned Evaluate 2012 program activities Identify scouts who demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the program TOT LOT SUPERVISOR Tot Lot supervisor must be an adult 21 years of age or older of well-known good character and ability. This leader shall: Be qualified to oversee dependent youth Be responsible to the camp director Prepare program activities appropriate for younger campers Ensure safety with the buddy system Ensure each camper leaves only with his parent or guardian STAFF RULES: 1. As Scouters, we should model all points of the Scout Law. 2. Wear camp uniform (camp t-shirt and nametag) STAFF HANDBOOK Page 5

3. Arrival time is 8:30AM daily. 4. Make sure all boys in each den at your station are accounted for before beginning the activity. Alert the Camp Director immediately if any boy is missing. 5. Enforce the buddy system. 6. Keep your designated area clean and properly store materials each day. 7. Take any injured camper to the first aid area for treatment unless moving them may cause further harm; in that case, send for the camp health officer. 8. No tobacco products are to be used around campers. 9. Make sure the boys and you drink enough water. 10. Staff must keep BSA credentials with them at all times while at camp 11. HAVE A GREAT TIME! The quality of fun the boys have at camp will depend on our program PLUS you as a leader or parent. Let the boys yell, get dirty and most of all HAVE FUN! Have fun with them..yell with them, get dirty with them.no one will mind. CAMP POLICIES AND REGUALTIONS: 1. No running or horseplay in camp except during supervised game time and in game area. 2. Buddy system: No Scouts go ANYWHERE without a buddy (Including the latrine). 3. Always remain with your den. If you must leave your group, such as to use the latrine, tell one of your leaders where you are going and with whom. 4. We will be using an Air Horn with two blast to finish each session to move on to next. 5. Close-toed shoes and socks MUST be worn. 6. The use of profane language will not be tolerated and will be cause for immediate discipline. 7. All discipline problems will be handled by the Camp Director. 8. All Cub Scouts will adhere to the dress code (camp t-shirts and name tags) 9. Remember to leave no trace; keep the camp clean. 10. The health officer will treat all injuries. 11. All medications (prescribed or over the counter) will be administered by the health officer. 12. The points of the Scout Law are to be followed. 13. No personal weapons of any type are allowed in camp. 14. Special rules for BB and Archery activity area: a. Do not cross over or under pennants marking the perimeters of the BB and Archery ranges. Use entrances and exits to these areas as marked. b. Always ask for and received permission to enter BB and Archery ranges from a camp staff member at that activity area before entering. c. Camp staff at the BB and Archery ranges will explain other safety rules specific to their activities. Failure to follow these rules will result in a camper being excluded from that activity. INCLEMENT WEATHER PLAN: Most camp activities can be carried out in light rain, especially if the Scouts and adults are dressed appropriately. In some cases, rainy-day activities may be substituted. In the case of heavy rain or thunder storm, direct your den into the covered pavilion until it passes. Encourage the boys to stay with their buddy and make sure each scout is accounted for. The camp director and program director will decided when to resume normal activities. FIRE PLAN: TORNADO: If a tornado watch comes into effect or if a tornado is spotted, proceed with your den to the covered pavilion and wait for further instructions. If a fire has been spotted, the camp director should be notified immediately. Den/Walking leaders are to gather their dens together quickly and head to the covered pavilion. If the fire is the covered pavilion, lead your den to the front of the property. Boys should be lined up in the buddy system so that all can be accounted for. Should fire trucks come, continue to keep the boys together in dens in this designated area. The camp director and program director will let everyone know when programs can be resumed. LOST BOYS PLAN: Once it is determined that a boy is not with his group and is not accounted for, the den/walking leader IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIES THE CAMP DIRECTOR. If the director is not available, notify the program director. When the lost boy plan goes into effect, den/walking leaders are to bring their dens to the covered pavilion and remain there until notified. CAMP DIRECTOR will: Talk with the den/walking leader to acquire the information about the scout Check areas of interest to the boys. Do buddy checks in all areas to determine if there is an extra boy there. Check all latrines. Check parking area, inside and around and under all vehicles. Check all other structures. If you still have not located the boy it is time to go to the next level. Gather all dens at the covered pavilion. Give them something to do so they will stay in one area. Have a leader who knows the boy check each den. Notify the Scout Executive and the District Executive. Divide the staff and assign areas to search. Start with the areas nearest where the boy was last seen. Follow instructions given by the Scout Executive if scout is still not found. STAFF HANDBOOK Page 7

SCOUT AND DISTRICT EXECUTIVE: INTRUDER PLAN: Notify the parents. Talk to them and try to get an insight into the situation. Notify the local law enforcement agency. All staff and campers will wear the official camp T-shirt and/or name tag. All visitors to camp should be directed to the Trading Post to sign in. At any time should a person be spotted in camp without a visitor s name tag of the proper camp identifications, that person should be escorted to the Trading Post to sign in. If any person fails to comply with these procedures, the camp director and the program director should be notified immediately. DAILY PROCEDURES: Daily check-in 8:30AM All staff should sign in every morning at the Trading Post. Activity instructors are responsible for making sure their area is set up and prepared for the day. All staff should attend the opening ceremony and dens will follow their Den/Walking Leaders to their first activity at the conclusion of the opening ceremony. The Den/Walking Leaders will take attendance everyday for campers. The Den/Walking Leaders will turn in attendance immediately after all campers are accounted for and before opening ceremonies. If anyone arrives after attendance, they must check-in at the Trading Post before joining their group. Daily check-out 4:15PM Activity instructions should make sure their areas are clean and supplies are stored properly before leaving. All staff should sign out before leaving and activity instructors should notify the camp director or program director if and supplies are needed or missing. Den/Walking Leaders will checkout campers from their den leaving camp at the end of the day. The Den/Walking Leaders should not leave camp until everyone from their group has been properly checked out and picked up. Anyone leaving camp early must sign out at the Trading Post. UPON ARRIVING AT CAMP ON FIRST DAY On the first day of camp, please arrive between 8:15 and 8:30AM. Park in the designated area on the enclosed map and then proceed to the check in station. When scouts arrive, help us direct scouts into the correct den. Once your den has arrived, take your den to the covered pavilion where you are to go over the camp rules outlined in this manual. Help your Scouts decorate their den flag, and make up a two to four line den yell. The theme for the den flag and yell should STAFF HANDBOOK Page 8

involve your camp theme and their den name. Den yells will be used to announce your presence at each activity area and/or at roll call. WHAT TO BRING TO CAMP Each Scout and Den/Walking Leader should arrive at camp each day with the following, marked with name and Den name: Unbreakable mug which can be attached to belt loop Rain gear, depending upon weather Insect repellent (non-aerosol) Money for Trading Post (for snack and inexpensive Scout Items) Any needed medication in labeled, child-proof container Soft backpack Lunch in paper bag with name printed on it. Den/Walking Leaders should also bring a large cooler with ice, in which to store their groups lunches. The ice could be frozen in empty milk jugs or 2-liter bottles to prevent the lunches from becoming soggy. LUNCH: Lunch will be on your own. There will be a half hour rest time after lunch where campers will enjoy a guest speaker. Staff should be present to assist as needed. TRADING POST A camp store, known as Trading Post, will offer snack items and drinks for under $1.00. Camp T-shirts and other Scout items provided by The Scout Shop will also be available, ranging in price from $2.00 to $10.00. Allow scouts to go to the Trading Post during their open time.
