Carl couldn't read or write prior to attending the class and would never have thought he could write a story book, but working together with his tutor he has successfully managed to do this, which will go towards the Entry 2 Writing qualification. Carl s tutor, Caroline Freeman, is thrilled with his progress, saying Carl s English and confidence have improved hugely throughout the course, and it s great to see how his progression is benefitting him personally. Coming to class has given him confidence in his abilities. Now he wants to help other people who are like him and to help them achieve their potential by sharing with them his learning experience. Carl does have additional learning needs but he has the necessary support and equipment he needs, in class, to help him achieve the learning goals he sets himself. Carl is also studying maths functional skills and hopes both will stand him in good stead in his search for employment, and is currently working on his second book! If you are inspired by Carl s achievements then please contact us for more information on learning. Need help paying for your learning with us? Find out more on Page 2 13

want to... kick start your career? TRAINEESHIPS I really enjoyed the programme and gained a lot from it. It helped me to learn a lot about myself and career progression. I gained confidence, knowledge and skills. I really enjoyed being part of a large team at Loughborough University in the IT Services Department. Kamar Kamar is a well-respected member of the department. He should be extremely proud of the work he has done during his time with us. I am sure he will go far in his chosen future career. Sharon ICT Department, Loughborough University Traineeships are a new initiative specifically designed for 16 to 24 year olds who are keen to find work or an apprenticeship, but so far haven t been successful during the application stage. A traineeship consists of work experience with a local employer as well as time in a classroom, where you will be taught subjects such as English, Maths, work preparation skills, interview skills, CV writing, team building and employability skills. The programme is designed to fit in with DWP guidance and will not affect your benefits. The programme could be extended to include ICT, first aid, food safety and health and safety, should this be appropriate to the type of work you are seeking. All trainees must be committed to the programme as well as seeking employment or an apprenticeship. Leicestershire Adult Learning Service will offer information, advice and guidance throughout the programme to support your applications. If you are a Leicestershire employer who would like to offer a voluntary opportunity to a young person, then please contact Dawn Page for more information on 0116 305 2434. If you would like to enrol onto our next fully funded traineeship programme then please telephone FREEphone 0800 988 0308 and ask for the Apprenticeships Team. 38 www.leics.gov.uk/golearn_traineeships

apprenticeships Apprenticeships provide a great opportunity to earn and learn at the same time, whilst gaining a recognised qualification. Apprenticeships have no upper age limit. Visit the National Apprenticeship website to find out all about apprenticeships and their advantages. It also tells you about all of the different types of apprenticeships available and vacancies you can apply for with Leicestershire employers, where Leicestershire Adult Learning Service deliver the training. I ve been on the course for a year now and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The on-going support that I have received from my tutor and assessor has been phenomenal with clear plans and guidance there has never been a point in time where I have felt unsure or unable with my work. The experience of working as a Learning Support Assistant at the Meadows Community Primary School has been truly insightful and exciting, with my confidence always growing and my skill set continually developing thanks to the support and training I have received. I have just completed my level 2 qualification and I am about to start my level 3, which I am very much looking forward to. I would highly recommend this course to anybody who is looking for a career in education! It has opened up a lot of doors for me. Calum Roche Level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning Apprentice We offer a range of apprenticeships in Leicestershire and Leicester. Childcare Health & Social Care Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools Customer Services Business Administration IT Team Leading and Management Remember there are many different types of apprenticeships; if we don t offer it there may well be other local providers who do. The National Apprenticeship website can provide more details about apprenticeships. On here you can search for vacancies advertised by all training providers in your local area. Please apply for vacancies online at www.apprenticeships.org.uk or call us for more information on FREEphone 0800 988 0308. The apprenticeship scheme, organised through Leicestershire County Council, has made such a difference to our school. Employing apprentices of all ages and backgrounds has added diversity and a new skill set to our staff group. The quality of mentoring and support is superb and all of our apprentices, when qualified, have gone on to secure posts at our school. I cannot recommend the scheme enough.
