16 Family Learning We hold short courses for parents and carers in some schools and children s centres to enable families to learn together. So if you want to find out about what and how your child learns, and ways to get involved whilst also improving your own confidence and skills and meeting other families, get in touch with your local school or children s centre to discover what s going on and be prepared to get messy and have fun! Family Learning helps Wayne to regain his confidence Wayne is a middle aged, single parent who has dyslexia and health issues. He has not worked for many years and rarely left the house. He was low in confidence and isolated at home. His community worker suggested he joined the Adult Learning Service Family Learning Story Sack course with his daughter. He never spoke unless it was to say I can t do this, this is so difficult. But as the weeks progressed he became a comedian, sharing jokes and laughing with the group. Since then he has attended a Family Learning Maths course in school, followed by a scrapbooking course, and cooking courses at Earl Shilton Community House. Currently he is in Everyday English, which is hard for him, but he is improving. Wayne has become a volunteer for the Community House, decorating, constructing work benches, gardening, and much more. He is also a parent governor, of which he is proud. If you know someone that you feel would benefit from adult learning why not encourage them to take that first step and join a local class or ask for more information? 16 Not sure which is the right course for you? I was very scared and in a bad place when I first came, but as the weeks and months have gone by I have learnt and coped and it has helped build me up to become a peer mentor for Swanswell, and hopefully for a path in my life. Each week has been varied which makes it more interesting. We have done word games, drawing, writing and also talking in front of the group. This group has got along and it has been very enjoyable and I have felt at ease with everyone. The group size is just right with a really nice group of people. This has helped me to come out of my shell. 26 Not sure which is the right course for you? Call FREEphone

Having been referred by Jobcentre Plus, Jill met with Jenny Curtin, Learning and Work Advisor, at her local adult learning centre. Jill had been the primary carer for her mum until she recently passed away, and combined with the need to move home, this had badly affected her confidence and self-esteem. After discussing her requirements in the meeting, it was agreed that she would benefit from attending our Planning for Work course. The first session was very stressful for Jill. However, gradually with the support of the tutors and other learners she became more communicative and her confidence levels improved. Following the short course, Jill dropped in to the local Work Club to share with the Learning and Work Advisor that she had successfully obtained employment as a Taxi Escort for children with disabilities travelling to and from school, and is enjoying her new role. 30 want to... kick start your career? TRAINEESHIPS Gina, who is one of our Trainees has recently been successful in gaining an apprenticeship at Ashmount School, she says The Traineeship Programme helped me to improve my Maths and English. I gained valuable work experience in childcare at Ashmount School. I now feel more confident and prepared for the world of work. I would recommend this programme to everyone, I really enjoyed it. I applied for an apprenticeship and was offered the position and I m really enjoying working at Ashmount School. Gina Sue Condron, the class teacher at Ashmount, is thrilled with Gina s progress saying I am extremely pleased with Gina s performance she has a natural way with the children, is always willing and has worked really hard. She has been an asset to the team and has coped really well with the challenging/complex behaviour. Sue Condron Traineeships are a new initiative specifically designed for 16 to 24 year olds who are keen to find work or an apprenticeship, but so far haven t been successful during the application stage. A traineeship consists of work experience with a local employer as well as time in a classroom, where you will be taught subjects such as English, Maths, work preparation skills, interview skills, CV writing, team building and employability skills. The programme is designed to fit in with DWP guidance and will not affect your benefits. The programme could be extended to include ICT, first aid, food safety and health and safety, should this be appropriate to the type of work you are seeking. All trainees must be committed to the programme as well as seeking employment or an apprenticeship. Leicestershire Adult Learning Service will offer information, advice and guidance throughout the programme to support your applications. If you are a Leicestershire employer who would like to offer a voluntary opportunity to a young person, then please contact Dawn Page for more information on If you would like to enrol onto our next fully funded traineeship programme then please telephone FREEphone and ask for the Apprenticeships Team. 30
31 apprenticeships Apprenticeships provide a great opportunity to earn and learn at the same time, whilst gaining a recognised qualification. Apprenticeships have no upper age limit. Visit the National Apprenticeship website to find out all about apprenticeships and their advantages. It also tells you about all of the different types of apprenticeships available and vacancies you can apply for with Leicestershire employers, where Leicestershire Adult Learning Service deliver the training. We offer a range of apprenticeships in Leicestershire and Leicester. Childcare Health and Social Care Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Customer Services Business Administration IT Team Leading and Management Millie arrived in England from Poland in 2008 and spoke no English whatsoever. Millie found this very hard and became withdrawn and too anxious to leave the house. She was encouraged by a friend to attend college where she began learning English and studying Childcare. Millie came to Leicestershire Adult Learning Service in 2013 and enrolled on Children and Young People s Workforce Level 3 Apprenticeship, based at Marlborough Day Nursery in Coalville. Millie Children and Young People s Workforce Level 3 Apprenticeship Remember there are many different types of apprenticeships; if we don t offer it there may well be other local providers who do. The National Apprenticeship website can provide more details about apprenticeships. On here you can search for vacancies advertised by all training providers in your local area. Please apply for vacancies online at or call us for more information on FREEphone As Millie s assessor I could see she was under confident in her abilities as she felt her English skills let her down. As the course went on she worked so hard to complete her Functional Skills Level 2 in English and I witnessed Millie grow in confidence and ability. Her progress in English was remarkable and passing the exams meant a great deal to her. As part of the apprenticeship Millie not only completed her Functional Skills in English Level 2 but also her Level 2 ICT Functional Skills. Millie successfully achieved her full apprenticeship by completing her CYPW Level 3 NVQ in October 2015 and is now a well-respected and accomplished childcare practitioner at the nursery. It has been a pleasure to be part of Millie s learning journey and so rewarding to see her grow and reap the rewards she truly deserves and has worked so hard for. Rachael Gallop Assessor 31
