Job Title: Firefighter FLSA Status: Regular Hourly Grade: 1 PRIMARY PURPOSE JOB DESCRIPTION CITY OF REPUBLIC, MO. Performs firefighting, fire prevention, and rescue work; maintains and cleans Fire Department buildings, grounds, and equipment. SUPERVISION Works under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, Fire Captain, Fire Lieutenant, Fire Engineer, or an Incident Commander at emergency scenes. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Responds to alarms for fires, hazardous chemical, and emergency medical incidents. 2. Lays and connects hose to hydrants and fire apparatus, attaches, and changes nozzles, aims, and directs water streams. 3. Uses various hand and power tools to fight fires, gain entry, extricate victims, and ventilate buildings. 4. Utilizes various portable extinguishers, wet and dry chemicals, solvents, and absorbents to fight fires and contain spills. 5. Performs salvage and overhaul activities including protecting building contents, cleaning, securing, and preserving fire scenes. 6. Removes firefighting equipment from trucks, lifts and carries items, sets up and uses ladders, tools, and equipment as necessary. 7. Climbs ground and aerial ladders, scales walls and rappels using rope and harness. 8. Maneuvers under, over, or around obstacles. 9. Searches smoke filled buildings utilizing self-contained breathing apparatus looking for the location of fire, occupants, or victims. 10. Performs prolonged running, walking, or standing while conducting inspections, pre-fire tours, and emergency scene operations. 11. Cares for the injured and administers basic emergency medical aid. 12. Performs routine and preventive maintenance on equipment and assists in periodic inspections or certification tests. 13. Reads, studies, and interprets department procedures, technical manuals, and building plans.
14. Performs pre-fire planning activities including touring and studying businesses for physical layout, possible hazards, location of water sources, exposure problems, potential life loss, etc. 15. Participates in drills and training sessions to maintain required level of knowledge and skills proficiency. 16. Maintains and cleans Fire Department buildings and grounds. 17. Operates vehicles and fire apparatus as required. 18. Prepares and delivers various public education programs regarding fire prevention and safety, and conducts tours of the fire station. 19. Assists in fire safety inspections of public and private buildings or property. 20. Identifies and reports maintenance needs of assigned equipment. 21. Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the general public. 22. Performs other duties as assigned. PERIPHERAL DUTIES 1. Attends in-service training sessions or other training sessions deemed appropriate by supervisor or department head. 2. Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area. 3. Maintains neat and orderly work area. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: 1. Must be a High School graduate or equivalent. 2. Shall have current certification issued by the Missouri Division of Fire Safety in Firefighter I and II. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 1. Must be able to complete an intensive training course in the principles and methodology of firefighting and rescue work responded to by the Republic Fire Department. 2. Must be able to memorize and retain information and effectively communicate through written and verbal skills. 3. Must have good cognitive and analytical skills, handle stressful situations, quickly assess or judge situations. 4. Must be able to perform effectively as a member of a team in carrying out the City s mission. The City of Republic exists to provide services to the citizens of the community. Employee is required to present themselves in a professional manner, displaying the utmost integrity, discretion, courtesy, cooperation, discipline, and behavior. Special Requirements: 1. Must be eighteen years of age or older. 2. Must possess a valid Missouri State Driver s License. 3. Must have first responder certification upon hire. 4. Must currently possess Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license or be able to obtain within six (6) month probationary period. 5. Shall reside and maintain a residency within a twelve (12) air mile radius of Republic Fire Station I while employed by the Republic Fire Department. New hires must meet this requirement within six months of hire. 6. Applicants for a full-time Firefighter position are required to complete testing through the Tri-State Fire Recruitment Alliance and must be on the Alliance s current applicant listing to be considered for hire. Tools and Equipment Used: Departmental equipment and tools necessary to perform the functions of the position. Computers, personal and other, including word processing, spreadsheet and data base software, 10-key calculator, phone, copy machine, fax machine. Must successfully complete pre-employment background investigation. 6. Will be subject to random substance abuse testing.
