UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, WINNEBA SCHOOL OF CREATIVE ARTS DEPARTMENT OF GRAPHIC DESIGN BACHELOR OF ARTS (GRAPHIC DESIGN)

BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF PROGRAMME OF STUDY In 1959, the Department of Art Education moved from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi to the Specialist Training College, Winneba. It continued with its 3-year Specialist course in Art Education which later changed into a 4-year Diploma programme. Between 1973 and 1978, new programmes were added. These were a 4-year national Diploma of Design and a 2-year Certificate course in Design for non-teachers. The Art Education Department underwent many changes until 1992/93 academic year when it was integrated into the University of Education, Winneba. The Graphic Section of the Art Education Department was separated and up graded into a unit in 2006/2007 academic year. Unit of the Institution offering each programme; i. Programme being offered 4 year Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design) ii. Date of establishment Graphic Design Unit 2006/2007 iii. Name and qualification of Head and Staff Rationale of the programmes Graphic Design is extremely popular among students at the SHS level. As a result there is a large turn-out of SHS Graphic Design graduates, every year. However, apart from the Communication Design Department at KNUST, there is no institution in Ghana that runs a B.A. Graphic Design programme. Many of these SHS graduates who have the requisite qualification and are interested in a B.A. Graphic Design programme are unable to secure admission since KNUST does not have the capacity to admit all of them. There is the need to provide an avenue for such candidates to study Graphic Design not only because they have the capability and are interested but also at the level [i.e. B.A.] they wish to. Graphic Design has the potential to provide job-oriented skills for the social, political and economic development of the nation. The Unit aims to provide opportunity for the study of an internationally recognized B.A. level programme in theory and practice of Graphic Design; as well as provide opportunity for producing a sustained body of creative graphic design work, and to develop appropriate research skills. Objectives of the programme The programme objectives are to Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Graphic Design research methods through studio practice, library skills, Information Technology and museum/gallery study Examine assumptions within Graphic Design practices Consider those creative, perceptual, conceptual, and practical structures which inform current Graphic Design practices Organize creative knowledge, practical skills and research abilities into a suitable working framework Evaluate and consider own practice within a critical context Research and develop ideas for Graphic Design work, and produce artwork that show critical awareness and commensurate technical skills. Employment prospects of grandaunts Graduates can pursue careers in areas such as: Advertising Web Designing
