Previous affiliations include the Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), and the University of Tromsø. His area of expertise is international relations with special emphasis on institutional analysis, resource and environmental management, and regional cooperation. Among his recent books are Disaggregating International Regimes: A New Approach to Evaluation and Comparison (MIT Press, 2012), Managing Institutional Complexity: Regime Interplay and Global Environmental Change (MIT Press 2011), and International Cooperation and Arctic Governance (Routledge 2007, pb. 2010, Chinese version by Ocean Press of China 2014).
