3 PAGE : 3 of 8 1 Introduction 1.1 Purpose of document This document contains information about the drilling of an exploration well 1 in license PL 553. The document contains information about the operation and the companies involved. All content is free to use for editorial purposes. 1.2 Det norske oljeselskap Det norske is a fully-fledged E&P company with exploration, development and production activities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. We are building one of Europe s largest independent E&P companies. Det norske is the operator for the Ivar Aasen field development, and is partner in the Johan Sverdrup field. The company has an ambitious strategy for continued growth, and has recently entered into an agreement to acquire Marathon Oil in Norway *. This acquisition will result in considerable production growth for the company. At the same time, Det norske continues its active exploration programme on the Norwegian shelf. Det norske is listed on Oslo Børs (DETNOR). Det norske s headquarters are located in Trondheim, with branch offices in Oslo and Harstad. Following the acquisition of Marathon in Norway, we will also have a Stavanger office. * Subject to approval by the authorities 2 License PL 553 Kvitvola, exploration well 34/7 36 S Det norske is licence operator with a 40 percent interest. Other partners are Svenska Petroleum Exploration AS (35 percent) and Bayerngas Norge (25 percent). The main purpose of the exploration well is to examine the potential for hydrocarbons. In case of findings, a production test of the well will be considered. 2.1 Location Exploration well 34/7 36 S Kvitvola is located north in the North Sea, 146 km west of Florø, Norway. The proximate installations are Visund, eight km east of Kvitvola, and Snorre, 13 km northwest. The location of the well is illustrated on the map at the next page. 1 Exploration well = Well drilled to detect possible presence of petroleum or provide information to refine a proven instance. Includes exploration and appraisal wells.

8 PAGE : 8 of 8 5 The environment and natural resources in the area Topic Seabed conditions and seabed fauna Current conditions Fish Seabirds Sea mammals Objects on the seabed Important areas Fisheries Aquaculture Description The water depth at Kvitvola is approximately 65 metres. An examination of the seabed at Kvitvola was conducted in There were no findings of corals or sponge in the area. The nearest vulnerable fauna which is registered is sea pen, 13 km away from Kvitvola. The water in the area around Kvitvola is relatively warm and salt from the Atlantic Sea, which flows through the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea. A major current flows southward along the western part of the Norwegian Trench. Another current flows northward along the edge of Edda and meets the coast current. Vortex formations with seawater on the surface level will occur closer to the Norwegian coast. These currents are very variable. It is primarily fish species in particular locations which, in parts of or during the entire life cycle, are vulnerable to petroleum operations. In the area surrounding Kvitvola, there are spawning areas for important species such as sandeel (Vikingbanken), Norwegian spawning herring (Mørebankene) and coalfish (Mørebankene). There are not vulnerable concentrations of fish eggs or larvae in the area at the time when the drilling is planned conducted. It is registered / couples of nesting seabirds in the North Sea/Norwegian Sea (representing 5 percent / 44 percent of the total Norwegian sea bird population, respectively). There are generally registered low concentrations of pelagic seabirds in the area surrounding Kvitvola, but razorbills in the area will be affected by an oil spill. Oil spills from Kvitvola will possibly affect seabird areas along the coast that are important for food search, nesting, moulting, or wintering. The whale species porpoise, springer dolphin and northern minke whale are frequently observed in the North Sea. In the Norwegian Sea, the most common species are northern minke whale, fin whale, sperm whale and humpback whale. Whales as a population are not vulnerable to oil spills. The coastal seal species grey seal and harbor seal are common along the entire coast of Norway. Oil spills from Kvitvola will possibly influence breeding and resting spots with large concentrations of harbor seal in Sogn og Fjordane and at the coast of Møre. The concentration of grey seal and otter is moderate in the area that may be influenced. Grey seal is most vulnerable in the periods November December and February April, while the harbor seal is most vulnerable in the June September period. No shipwrecks or other objects (cultural reminiscents) are found near Kvitvola. An oil spill from Kvitvola can possibly influence four areas that are very valuable: (1) the coast (0-25 km); (2) the Kors fjord (Hordaland); (3) Bemanger-Outer Sula (Sogn og Fjordane); (4) Mørebankene. Kvitvola does not affect important spawning areas for sandeel. In Møre og Romsdal there are three RAMSAR areas that are protected by the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat. They are located in an area that potentially can be influenced by an oil spill: Giske wetland system, Harøya wetland system, and Runde. Fishing with bottom trawl is the most important form of fishery around Kvitvola. In recent years, the trawling in the area has been so marginal in the drilling period that it does not represent any real use of the area. Neither other Norwegian nor international fisheries are expected to be affected by the planned activities. Aquaculture locations in Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal can be affected by an oil spill from Kvitvola, but the probability is low.
