North Carolina State University Dance Team Campus Box 8111 Raleigh, NC 27695 www.ncstatedanceteam.org www.gopack.com/danceteam ncstatedanceteam@gmail.com NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY DANCE TEAM 2015-2016 Thank you for your interest in the NC State Dance Team! This audition packet includes information about the audition process, judging criteria and rules & responsibilities of prospective dance team members. Please read over this information carefully and contact Head Coach, Amanda Roediger at ncstatedanceteam@gmail.com for any additional questions and/or concerns. GENERAL AUDITION INFORMATION: 1. All candidates must be accepted as full time students at NC State University prior to the audition to be considered for the 2014-2015 team. You will need to show proof of acceptance by providing your acceptance letter or Student ID number on the first day of tryouts. 2. All candidates must show a copy of their insurance information/card the first day of tryouts in order to be eligible to audition. NC State University, the NC State Dance Team and coaching staff are not responsible for injuries that may occur as result of participation. 3. All candidates must fill out the Audition Application (included in this packet) and bring it to the first day of tryouts. 4. All candidates must be able to comply with the rules and responsibilities of being a member of the NC State Dance Team. These are outlined in this audition packet. 5. All tryout sessions are closed to family and other spectators. 6. Tryout attire for the audition process consists of cropped dance top or sports bra, black pants or dance shorts and tights. Dance shoes must be worn at all times, and hair and make-up should reflect how you would look at a performance.

JUDGING PROCESS AND CRITERIA The NC State Dance Team coaching staff will be looking for well rounded dancers with outstanding technical skills, stage presence, and demonstrated proficiency in all three collegiate styles of dance (Pom, Jazz and Hip Hop). Please do not assume however, that a weakness in one area will disqualify you as a Dance Team member. The coaches are looking for dancers who are eager to learn and improve and will display a positive attitude at all times. The Tryout Process varies each year depending on number of people trying out, but usually consists of an optional Pre-Audition Clinic (at a prior date), 1st Round & 2nd Round of Tryouts on Day 1, and a Final Audition on Day 2. Pre-Audition Clinic The pre-audition clinic is optional. It is open to high school students and prospective dance team members. During the clinic you will learn various skills and have a chance to work with current and former dancers to gain insight on the NC State style of dance. You will also receive constructive critiques from the coaches about what you can work on for the auditions. Day 1 Candidates will go through a class-style audition using across the floor technique combinations as the basis for their assessment. Candidates will then learn a section of Gameday material, that will demonstrate their proficiency in Pom, which will be followed by two short routines, one Jazz and one Hip Hop. If we feel at any point during this day that a cut needs to be made, we will do so. If not, the first cut will be a cut made at the end of Day 1. Day 2/Final Auditions Candidates will be judged in groups of 3-4 by the Dance Team Coaches and an outside judging panel. Candidates will demonstrate the required across the floor skills individually and will then perform the Gameday material and dances they have learned, as a group. Those chosen to be members of the NC State Dance Team will be announced shortly after the Final Auditions. Candidates will be judged on their technique, adaptation to our style, physical fitness, and memorization and should be able to perform the following skills: Jazz/Technique Short Jazz Dance (taught during the tryout) Triple and Quad Pirouettes Fouette turns/elite combinations (at least 2 eight counts) Leaps in second (left and right) Switch Leaps (left and right) Switch Opens Switch tilts Chaine Open Leaps Leap/Turn Combinations Flexibility demos- Leg Hold Turns, Extension holds

Hip Hop Short Hip Hop dance (taught during the tryout) Floor tricks Tumbling skills (optional) Pom: Gameday material (taught during the tryout) Knowledge of cheer motions and motion placement Toe Touch and double toe touch

All team members must be on time and dressed appropriately 5. Dance Team members are expected to be in and maintain a healthy and physically fit condition. All members will participate in a conditioning and running program. Timed miles and long distance runs will be required beginning in pre-season. Distance runs will be run before each game practice throughout the season. 6. Dance Team members will actively participate in fundraising projects, benefit performances and volunteer work for the community. 7. Although the Dance Team is predominantly supported through the University, there are some out of pocket expenses that are necessary. NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY DANCE TEAM 2014-2015 VIDOTAPE/DVD AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS If you are unable to attend the Spring Tryout, we strongly suggest that you submit an audition via video so you can participate in the Summer Practice sessions and attend Camp with the team. Those who wait to tryout in the fall are strictly trying out for fill-in spots (2-5) and will miss the summer practices/camp and are behind on material for football season. We would always prefer to see candidates in person, but if you have an extenuating circumstance and need to audition via video please email ncstatedanceteam@gmail.com for mailing information. Please submit audition material on a standard DVD. This will become property of the NCState Dance Team and will NOT be returned. All video submissions must be received by July 17, 2015. Dance Routines: All three styles must be submitted in order for your audition to be considered and judged. Dance routines must only feature the individual who is auditioning. Group routine recordings will NOT be accepted. Please wear dancewear that meets the above criteria (crop top and dance pants/shorts) and shows your body placement and lines. Please mail the audition application and a copy of your acceptance letter along with your video. Please email ncstatedanceteam@gmail.com for mailing information.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY DANCE TEAM 2015-2016 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the time commitment like? The NC State Dance Team practices 4 nights a week for 3 hours. In addition to practice, the dance team is required to be at every home football game, Men s and Women s Basketball games, home Gymnastics meets, and some out of state trips for those on the travel team (away football games, bowl games). Many of these events fall on weekends and during Thanksgiving Break, Christmas Break, and Spring Break. In addition, the dance team also performs at pep rallies, community events and must also participate in fundraising activities. Dance Team takes up a considerable amount of time but many members have been able to have part time jobs that are flexible as well as participate in academic groups on campus. Does the Team Practice in the summer? Yes. The Dance Team practices the week prior to NDA College Camp in August. We may also ask new members to participate in a one day clinic to perfect certain skills prior to our August pre-season. There are occasional appearance opportunities during the summer as well, which will operate on a volunteer basis. How Many Girls do you take on the Team? There is no set number of girls that are allowed to be on the dance team. If you meet the skills requirements and are prepared to uphold the standards of the NC State Dance Team, then we have a spot for you! Each season the team usually consists of anywhere from 25-35 girls who are split into two teams; Red Team and White Team. What if I want to try out for the team but I cannot make it to the Spring Auditions? We strongly encourage everyone to attend Spring Auditions but if you cannot make it there are other options! We recommend that you submit an Audition Video if you would like to be eligible to participate in summer practice and NDA college dance camp. We also hold an audition in the fall for fill in spots, which takes place at the beginning of the school year in September. At this point we are usually only looking to take between 2-5 girls. Those who audition in the fall miss summer practices and are behind on sideline and halftime material for Football Season so are not usually available to get on the field until a few games into the season.

Does the NC State Dance Team compete? Yes! Every year the Dance Team attends the NCA/NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship in Daytona Beach, FL in April. We are consistently ranked top ten in the nation. What should I wear/bring to tryouts? All participants should wear long black plants or black boy shorts/tights and a midriff sports bra/dance top for both tryout days. Hair and makeup should be done as though you were performing at a game. Bring your audition application, any jazz shoe of your choice, and don t forget water! What should I expect from Practice? Staying in peak physical condition is a very important part of being a member of the NCSU dance team. Each practice begins with running 2-3 miles and ends with performing abdominal exercises. Timed miles are required during football season in order to be eligible to dance on the field. The remaining practice time consists of stretching, working on technique and learning and perfecting routines.
