Barracuda SPAM Firewall SPAM and other types of unwanted email is a steadily growing problem for all businesses and schools. Because of the growing nature of the problem, we have a SPAM filter and Quarantine program on our network called the Barracuda SPAM Firewall. Not only does this device try and delete unwanted junk email, it also offers individual users some additional control on their email accounts to help make sure that you receive the email you need to receive and you block as much of the unwanted junk as possible. The Barracuda SPAM Firewall may periodically send you an email titled SPAM Quarantine Summary. The SPAM Quarantine is actually email the Barracuda is not 100% sure is SPAM. If the Barracuda is unsure, it will quarantine the email(s) and not delete them just in case you might want to read them. The email from the Barracuda, similar to the one below, will give you a list of the emails that are in your Quarantine. The email will show as coming from the Barracuda SPAM Firewall and it will have the return address of cfbujarsky@shelbycs.k12.in.us. There is a listing of the emails in your SPAM Quarantine account. If you want to receive the email, just click on the Deliver link. Whitelist means that the email address will be one that will not be scanned for SPAM and will be delivered to your email account. If you go to your Quarantine Inbox account that is housed on the Barracuda SPAM Firewall, you will have more options to control your SPAM and will be able to set some preferences that will be specific to your email account. There is a link at the bottom of your SPAM Quarantine Summary email you can click on that will take you directly to your account on the Barracuda. Page #1

Logging into your account on the Barracuda SPAM Firewall There are two ways to access your account on the Barracuda Spam Firewall. The first way is to use the link on the email titled SPAM Quarantine Summary that the Barracuda SPAM Firewall periodically sends to you. That method was described on the previous page of this Help Guide. The other way to access the Barracuda Spam Firewall, you can go to the Barracuda webpage at: http://www.shelbycs.org/barracuda/ That page will provide you a link to use to access the Barracuda Spam Firewall login page, which is pictured below. Your username can either be the first part of your email address prior to the @ or you can use your full email address such as: cfbujarsky --or -- cfbujarsky@shelbycs.k12.in.us Then enter your Barracuda password in the Password box. If you do not remember or do not know your Barracuda password, then at the Barracuda Login Screen, type in your email address in the Username box and then click on the button "Create New Password". The Barracuda will then send your Barracuda password to your email account that you can then use to login. Page #2

Quarantine Inbox account on the Barracuda On the main page of the Quarantine Inbox, pictured below, you will see a listing of the email that the Barracuda has quarantined as possible SPAM. If you want an email sent to your email account and all emails from that email address sent to your email account in the future, click on the Whitelist link. Putting an email address in a Whitelist tells the Barracuda that you want email from that person. Please realize that even of you whitelist someone for your email account, that person is not whitelisted for anyone else in the district. If you want to have the email delivered to your email account but you do not want to whitelist the email address, just click on either the Deliver link on the far right side of the row or the Deliver button. If you do not want the email at all, just click on the Delete link/button. The Barracuda can also learn what you consider to be SPAM. If there is SPAM in your Quarantine Inbox you can put a check mark in the box on the left side of the row and click on Whitelist. As you tell the Barracuda what you consider to be SPAM, the Barracuda will learn what your patterns are and will eventually start blocking other emails that fit your description of SPAM. Page #3

You can set some personal preferences on the Barracuda SPAM Firewall as well. Click on the Preferences tab, highlighted in red in the graphic below. The first screen in the Preferences section is the Whitelist/Blacklist for your email account. As described earlier, putting an email address in a Whitelist tells the Barracuda that you want email from that email account to always be delivered to you. The Blacklist is the opposite. If an email address is placed in the Blacklist, email from that account will not be delivered to your email account. You can only whitelist and blacklist for your email account. So if Susie blacklists the email account joey@yahoo.com, no email sent to Susie from joey@yahoo.com will be delivered to Susie s email account. But if George whitelists joey@yahoo.com all email addressed to George sent from joey@yahoo.com, will be delivered to George s email account but it will not change Susie s blacklisting of joey@yahoo.com. To add an email address, just type in the email address in the white text box and click on the Add button. If there is an email address you want to remove from your whitelist or from your blacklist, just click on the trash can icon to the right of the email address. Page #4

Quarantine Settings for your Barracuda Account You can adjust some settings on your SPAM Quarantine account by clicking on the Quarantine Settings, highlighted in red in the graphic below. The first setting asks you whether or not you want the SPAM Quarantine account enabled. You can choose to disable your SPAM quarantine account. If you disable the account then all of the email you saw listed in the first screen would just be delivered to your regular email account. If you want to make a change, just click on what you want to change and then click on the Save Changes button. The next setting determines how often you would like to receive the SPAM Quarantine Summary email. A reasonable setting would be to receive the notification on a weekly basis. That way you are reminded about your SPAM Quarantine periodically. You can choose to not have the SPAM Quarantine Summary email sent to at all. If you want to make a change, just click on what you want to change and then click on the Save Changes button. You can choose to have the SPAM Quarantine Summary email reminder sent to a different address, but the default is your shelbycs.k12.in.us email account. Page #5

SPAM Settings for your Barracuda Account If, for some odd reason, you do not want any SPAM filtering for your email account, you can disable it by selecting No in the SPAM Settings section. I would not recommend that. Not only would you receive all of the email that is in your Quarantine Inbox, you would also receive all of the SPAM and other types of inappropriate email messages that are automatically blocked, which might be a substantial amount of email for some accounts. As of October 2009, our email server processes approximately 35,000-40,000 email messages from the Internet every school day. Of those email messages received from the Internet, approximately 500-600 of them are legitimate email messages. So for every one legitimate email from the Internet that is processed and delivered, there may be anywhere from 60-80 email messages that are blocked due to the content of the message. Page #6

Changing your Barracuda Password In the Password section, you can change your Barracuda password by typing in your current password in the Old Password box, and then type in the password you would like to use in the New Password and Re-Type New Password box and then click on the Save Password button. If you forgot your password If you forgot your password, you can have the Barracuda send it to you by going to the login screen and typing in your full Shelbyville Central email address in the username box. Then click on the Create New Password. If you did not create a password for your Barracuda account, the Barracuda will create one for you and send it to your email account. If you have already created a password, the Barracuda will not change it, but it will send you what password it has currently listed for your email account. Once you are finished working with your Quarantine Inbox account on the Barracuda, just click on the Log Off link on the webpage. Page #7
