The first year functions as a type of pre-master s programme and leads directly into your master s programme in year two. These new programmes offer you a unique opportunity to take an integrated approach to your master s study. They combine study in your academic area with an explicit focus on developing your academic English, analytical and research skills over two years. These programmes are taught jointly by School and English Language Centre (ELC) academics. The ELC is accredited by the British Council. We are looking for a background which demonstrates excellent academic potential and will consider applications from students with a non-social science background. I took this programme as I knew the War Studies MA is very popular and a competitive entry programme. This programme has been very useful in helping me improve my academic English and subject knowledge in preparation for my MA. All the tutors were very supportive throughout the programme.
