South Forsyth High School Georgia s HOPE SCHOLARSHIP and HOPE GRANT Planning ahead to help pay for college! We Are South Forsyth

There are two different HOPE Programs HOPE Scholarship and HOPE Grant

College Costs How can HOPE help HOPE COVERS these costs: Tuition the cost of attending class! Tuition for remedial classes in technical schools HOPE DOES NOT COVER THESE COSTS: Tuition for remedial classes at 2 & 4 year colleges Room and board Books Fees Spending money Transportation Tutoring help

THE HOPE SCHOLARSHIP Can be used at Technical Colleges, 2 year colleges or 4 year colleges; Must be used in the state of Georgia! HOPE cannot be taken out of state; Must be earned 3.0 Core GPA (English, Math, Science, Social Studies and World Language) HOPE Scholarship amounts will be based on a percentage of lottery revenues that will change each year.

How do I earn the HOPE Scholarship? You must graduate from high school with a 3.0 GPA in your academic subjects Only Math, Science, Social Studies, English and World Language classes count in this calculation

How are my HOPE GPA and Cumulative GPA Different? SFHS Cumulative GPA All courses count towards the average HOPE GPA Only academic core courses count towards the average Calculated by SFHS Tracked on student transcripts Additional quality point of 1.0 added to college level courses (AP, IB, Dual Enrollment) Calculated by GSFC Tracked at gacollege411.org Additional quality point of.5 added to college level courses (AP, IB, Dual Enrollment) Average can exceed 4.0 Average cannot exceed 4.0

Go Figure! Who calculates the HOPE GPA? While your counselor can look at your numbers with you, only the GEORGIA STUDENT FINANCE COMMISSION can calculate HOPE. You can check the preliminary calculation on your GaCollege411 account at www.gacollege411.org Your FINAL HOPE GPA is not determined until after you graduate so all your academic grades count!

HOPE Scholarship Calculation You get these points for academic core courses 90-100 = A= 4 points 80-89 = 70-79 = B= 3 Points C= 2 points Below 70 F= 0 points NOTE: Your school transcript has your cumulative GPA, which is an average of all your courses.

HOPE Example World History 99 = A = 4 Math II 89 = B = 3 Chemistry 79 = C = 2 Spanish II 89 = B = 3 10 th Literature 79 = C = 2 2.8 = No HOPE Even though this student has an 87 academic GPA, he will not be HOPE Eligible! 14/5 = 2.8

Quality Points for AP/IB/Dual Enrollment Class HOPE will add an additional.5 quality point HOPE will not calculate anything over a 4.0 For example, a B in AP Human Geography will earn 3.5 quality points (not 4 quality points earned at SFHS). An A will be calculated as 4 quality points (not 5 quality points earned at SFHS).

Georgia Public Colleges How much tuition will HOPE cover? The HOPE Scholarship and Grant amounts will be adjusted each year dependent on lottery revenues. Currently, the HOPE Scholarship covers approximately 90% of the current cost of tuition at Georgia s PUBLIC Colleges.

HOPE SCHOLARSHIP RIGOR REQUIREMENTS! New academic requirements are included in HOPE Legislation. Students graduating on or after May 1, 2015, must meet these academic requirements to qualify for HOPE!

HOPE SCHOLARSHIP RIGOR REQUIREMENTS! Graduating on or after: Number of Rigorous courses required May 1, 2015 2 May 1, 2016 3 May 1, 2017 4

HOPE SCHOLARSHIP What counts as rigorous courses? 1) Advanced Placement courses in core subjects 2) Academic courses taken through Dual Enrollment 3) Advanced science courses Chemistry, Physics, Human Anatomy, etc. 4) Advanced Math such as CCGPS Advanced Algebra, CCGPS Pre-Calculus, Math III, Math IV or a higher math 5) Advanced foreign language courses (second year and higher)

I want to attend a Private College in GA will HOPE cover it? NO! At eligible private schools (check this out for your particular school) you will receive approximately $3600 through the HOPE Scholarship and Tuition Equalization portions of the HOPE Program. For example, Tuition at many GA private schools is now $35,000 per year. You would still owe about $32,400 per year after HOPE pays.

My HOPE average is close Is there anything I can do? Maybe. Work very hard on your academic classes this semester and make A s to boost your academic GPA! HOPE DOES NOT ROUND UP! A 2.999999 is not good for HOPE!

The Zell Miller Scholarship Will pay the full cost of tuition for: Valedictorian and the Salutatorian of each Georgia high school It will also pay for students who graduate with both a 3.7 HOPE GPA and a 1200 verbal and math combined score on the SAT (at one administration) or a 26 composite on the ACT (these must be earned BEFORE graduation). *The Zell Miller Scholarship will be renewable for the recipients who maintain a 3.3 GPA in college.

Help! I can already tell that I am NOT going to be eligible for the HOPE Scholarship! We Are South Forsyth Is there any HOPE for me getting money for college without the HOPE Scholarship?

More HOPE ABSOLUTELY There is HOPE without the HOPE Scholarship!

Some students aren t eligible for the HOPE Scholarship when they graduate high school, but We Are South Forsyth Most of you are eligible for the HOPE GRANT!

The HOPE GRANT Does not require a specific GPA when you graduate from high school it does require a high school diploma or GED You can receive the HOPE Grant to attend Georgia public TECHNICAL COLLEGES! HOPE Grant will cover approximately 90% of the current year s tuition at technical schools. In future years, the amount paid will be a specific percentage dependent on lottery revenues.

Maintaining HOPE If you do not maintain a 3.0 in college, you will lose the HOPE scholarship. If you do not maintain a 2.0 in technical college, you will lose the HOPE Grant. If you lose HOPE during college, you can only regain it ONE time

Quiz Question 1 I want to go to Lanier Tech. My HOPE GPA is a 2.1. How can I get my tuition paid?

Quiz Answer 1 Apply for the HOPE GRANT It will fund the large majority of your first year s tuition at a technical college regardless of your high school GPA upon entry.

Quiz Question 2 I want to go to Mercer or Savannah College of Art and Design they are private and pricey! Since they are in Georgia, will the HOPE Scholarship pay all my tuition at these schools?

Quiz Answer 2: No! These are not public schools. They are private schools. This fall, the HOPE Scholarship will pay approximately $3600 per year at a private school.

Quiz Question 3: I ve been accepted at West Georgia, but I am not eligible for the HOPE Scholarship. How can I earn it?

Quiz Answer 3: Go to West Georgia, pay your own tuition for your first year. Earn 30 semester hours credit with a 3.0 GPA, and you will be eligible for the HOPE Scholarship!

Quiz Question 4: If I have the grades to earn the HOPE Scholarship, will it automatically be awarded to me?

Quiz Answer 4: NO, YOU will NOT receive the HOPE Scholarship or the HOPE Grant unless you apply. While some schools use the information from FAFSA for HOPE, many others do not. Apply online for the HOPE Programs at GACollege411. org

HOPE is a promise to help with your education! You are lucky to live in Georgia where there is still HOPE!
