Main Menu options. Applicants should select the appropriate option, based on their current needs. 6
Applicants are directed to this screen if they choose the first option; View Open Jobs & Apply. This page lists all the open test announcements that accept online applications. Applicants may enter a specific announcement number in this field. Applicants may also choose to click on an announcement number to make their selection. Test Announcements with no closing date listed are open until further notice. 7
After making a selection, the applicant is directed to this page, which features the current test announcement. Applicants should read the announcement in its entirety, paying special attention to the minimum experience and training requirements and the job opportunities section before beginning the application submission process. 8
Applicants should apply for ALL job titles for which they believe they are qualified on a test announcement. Additional titles can NOT be added after testing. 9
This prompt will appear if the test announcement indicates residency in Pennsylvania as a requirement. Most civil service positions require Pennsylvania residency. Additional information pertaining to residency requirements can be found by clicking on Job Seekers, General Information, and then PA Residency Information. 10
Applicants interested in full-time, permanent employment should check Career Appointment. Applicants may also wish to consider parttime, temporary, or seasonal employment as these may lead to permanent opportunities. This drop-down box allows individuals to choose a Pennsylvania county or indicate if they are an out-of-state applicant. 11
Applicants should read the Job Opportunities section of the test announcement to ensure choices for counties of employment correspond to the location of positions. 12
Driver s license information should be supplied, so consideration is made for jobs requiring one. If a PA driver s license is mandatory, it will be stated in the test announcement. A copy of the DD-214 must be submitted with the application for an initial claim of veterans preference. (If applying online, instructions will be mailed to the veteran on submitting the DD-214.) To claim preference thereafter, a veteran only needs to select Yes. This screen follows the county selection page and the majority of information will be pre-populated. Updates may be made to any of the existing information. 13
Completion of this section is OPTIONAL. Information is kept confidential. It is used only for research and equal employment opportunity purposes. 14
Applicants should provide license/certification numbers and expiration dates, if related to jobs for which they are applying. Applicants who are fluent in language(s) other than English should indicate this on each application. Giving permission to verify education and experience will not jeopardize current employment. (Verification occurs only after applicant is hired.) Applicants must include all names under which his/her employment and training/education records may be found. 15
Applicants must submit college transcripts for jobs requiring specific college credits. (Unofficial transcripts are accepted.) In lieu of transcripts, an applicant may submit a list of completed courses course title, attendance dates, credits earned, grade earned, and institution name. Transcripts may be submitted in person or mailed to: State Civil Service Commission P.O. Box 569, Harrisburg, PA 17108-0569. Educational credits are verified if a job offer is made; official transcripts may be required at that time. School State is a required field. Applicants with foreign education credentials should select PA from the drop-down box options. Applicants MUST choose the Save this Entry option to have newly entered information retained. 16
A resume cannot be submitted in place of an application. Applicants may copy and paste information from an electronic document into the Duties section of this page. Information entered initially will automatically populate for subsequent applications. Applicants may update each application with pertinent data. Applicants should describe their various job duties thoroughly, in order to assist the SCSC evaluator to correctly determine eligibility. 17
This page summarizes the contents of an individual s application. Applicants may review and/or make changes to any section by clicking on the desired selection on the left hand side of the screen. 18
Criminal records are considered on a case-bycase basis. If an applicant is uncertain, s/he should answer Yes and explain at the interview. 19
Testing accommodations may include extended time, rest period without time penalty, reader/note-taker, sign language interpreter, alternative test format, or use of adaptive equipment. The following screen will illustrate what an applicant will see if they choose yes. 20
The SCSC will provide testing accommodations for applicants with disabilities only if a completed Justification for Accommodation Request form is submitted and approved. 21
Applicants who indicate that they do not need a testing accommodation, and whose application requires a written test, will be directed to this screen to schedule a time for testing. Only one location can be selected for testing. Testing locations in Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh offer daily (Monday Friday) testing. Testing locations in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton offer testing approximately 10 days each month. 22
After a desired time has been selected, the Schedule Examination button should be chosen. Applicants should choose an available date that fits their schedule. 23
The confirmation number indicates successful submission of application. The confirmation page appears immediately after an applicant schedules an examination. It should be printed and brought to the testing site on the scheduled test day. A hard copy of the completed application may also be printed from this screen. 24
Examination dates may be cancelled or rescheduled by choosing the third option from the main-menu screen; Schedule or Reschedule. 25
Applicants are directed to this screen if their application requires a rating of experience and training, instead of a computer-based examination at a testing center. In these instances, the application and supplement will be scored and serve as the actual test. Applicants should ensure that information is complete before clicking the Begin Supplement button. 26
