Coaching Staff In May of 2009, the University of West Georgia announced the appointment of Stanley Skip Fite as the Wolves new head baseball coach. Fite, 53, returned to the West Georgia family following 25 seasons as head coach at Augusta State University. The 2013 season was the best of the best in Fite s tenure at UWG, as his squad finished the season with a 27-24 overall record, including a 12-12 spot in Gulf South Conference play. His Wolves were stellar, especially in the pitching staff that included All-American Jamie Sexton, who became the ninth All-American in UWG history and the first pitcher to ever earn that title. The Wolves made waves at the GSC tournament as well, reaching championship day before losing to Delta State in the conference semifinals. Prior to the 2014 season, Fite was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Hall of Fame at the Ravinia Crowne Plaza Hotel in Atlanta. He helped the Blazers to a two-year record of 46-10 and a third place finish in the NCAA Tournament. Also, Fite briefly played professionally in the Minnesota Twins organization before starting his coaching career. Fite is a 1978 graduate of Valdosta State, where he earned a bachelor s degree in Health Science/Kinesiology. In 1981 he earned his master s degree from West Georgia in Physical Education. Assistant Coach Jeff Smith For the fifth straight year, University of West Georgia Head Baseball Coach Skip Fite will have veteran support on the bench, as Jeff Smith returns as the top assistant coach post for the 2014-15 season. Coach Smith is in charge of coaching the pitching staff for UWG, and in his tenure as pitching coach, the wolves team ERA has dropped significantly. In his first year in 2010 the team ERA was 7.86 and last season Smith coached his team to a 3.87 ERA. Smith came to West Georgia following five seasons on the staff at former GSC East rival Montevallo. He served the Falcons in a variety of capacities, including pitching coach, recruiting coordinator, and, briefly, interim head coach. UWG s newest coach is a 1990 graduate of Cumberland (Tenn.) University, where he heard a B.S. in Physical Education. He was also an accomplished performer for the Bulldogs, posting a 12-0 record as a pitcher during two seasons at Cumberland. uwgsports.com 3
