As we learn about other people in other places, we can realize that they are more like us than different. The chapter book looks at Carlos, a boy who learns about Christopher Columbus. As Inc. we compare the past to the present, we also realize that our American culture began when these early explorers came to our country long ago. Classroom Activities/Lesson Plan: Leveled Book: Friends Around the World This story is presented in three leveled text formats: Levels aa, B and C. Select a level appropriate to the student. Description: This story looks at various teens around the world. Are our cultures different or similar? Do a picture walk. Discuss the activities that the people are doing in the pictures. Which of these are activities that you like to do? Read the story as a group. Three levels of reading materials are provided with this lesson. Independent or paired reading will focus on individual reading levels with text or supported text versions. Focus on high frequency words and picture supports. Follow up reading by showing the countries on the globe where the story characters live. While people live in many places, we often enjoy the same types of activities. Word recognition cards are provided in this lesson to support high frequency words within the unit reading materials.
