FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Question 1: Who can apply online using this Admission Portal: http://mtechadm.iitm.ac.in I. Candidates (Indian as well as Foreign Nationals) having qualified GATE 2015 and/or GATE 2016 score II. Candidates who have obtained B. Tech Degrees from IITs can apply without GATE score In both the cases, candidates yet to appear or have appeared in the final examination for the qualifying degrees and whose results are likely to be declared by 15 July, 2016 can apply. For details, see section 2.7 on page 4 of the Information Brochure. Question 3: I have a valid GATE 2015 and/or GATE 2016 Score. What are the minimum requirements for admission to M.Tech. Programmes at IIT Madras? I. Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture from educational Institutions approved by AICTE/Government or II. Master's degree in Chemistry/Life Sciences/ Mathematics/Physics/related subjects from educational Institutions approved by UGC/ Government* or III. Can I apply? Yes, Apply online: http://mtechadm.iitm.ac.in Candidates graduating/ graduated from IITs with B.Tech. degree can apply without GATE Score. They should have CGPA of 7.5 (on the scale of 10) and above if they belong to SC/ST Category, and CGPA of 8.0 (on scale of 10) and above if they are OBC or General or PwD (Person with Disability) Candidates. Their applications will be reviewed by the respective Department(s). Candidates yet to appear or have appeared in the final examination for the qualifying degrees and whose results are likely to be declared by 15 July, 2016 can apply. Question 6: I am Foreign Nationals with valid qualified GATE score. Can I apply? For details, see Section 2.7C, page 4 of the Information Brochure. Question 10: I am a candidate under the Quality Improvement Programme. Can I apply? For QIP Candidates, a separate advertisement will be issued by the Centre for Continuing Education, IIT Madras and the selection is made through a test/ interview. For further details, visit http://www.qip.iitm.ac.in/. Question 11: I am a GATE qualified candidate. How do I apply Online at http://mtechadm.iitm.ac.in? What are the documents needed to be uploaded? (a) For Indian Nationals: Register online at http://mtechadm.iitm.ac.in by clicking 'Register' link at the top right. Apply online at this website http://mtechadm.iitm.ac.in by clicking the 'Login' link. Website Opens on 7 th March, 2016 and closes on 15 th April, 2016 at 23:59 Hrs. Carefully read all the instructions given in the Information Brochure. Study Table 1, Table 2, Table 3 and Table 4 in the Information Brochure carefully, together with details of programmes. Read the eligibility criteria carefully and choose your options (Maximum of 8 choices). Exercise utmost care in choosing the order of choices; Once they are made cannot be changed later Complete the application in all respects. No changes in the application are permitted once the application is submitted. Upload your recent Passport Size Photograph* and Signature*. Nationality Certificate # (Birth Certificate or First page of your Passport or Voter ID or Certificate issued by approved Govt. agency for Nationality or SSLC certificate showing nationality ): Mandatory for all Note that Ration Card/ Aadhar Card/ PAN Card/ Domicile Certificates are not authentic proof for nationality. Therefore, please do not upload them. PwD Certificate # in the case of PwD candidates Persons with Disability (PwD) are required to upload a certificate* of disability from the AUTHORIZED MEDICAL BOARD attached to one of the following - Vocational Rehabilitation Centre (VRC) for Physically Handicapped persons/ Special Employment Exchange for Physically Handicapped/ Government Hospital (District and State level). SC/ ST Certificate # in the case of SC/ ST candidates OBC-NCL Certificate # in the case of OBC-NCL candidates To consider under OBC category, candidates should upload the OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) certificate in the format prescribed by Government of India issued by competent authorities available in the website http://mtechadm.iitm.ac.in/pdfs/obc_ncl.pdf Submission of only BC or MBC certificate will not be treated as OBC category. If no valid OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) certificate copy is uploaded, the candidate will be treated under General category. List of Courses # and Syllabi # in case of Candidates with ZE/ZS Disciplines Make online payment of the application fee (Rs.100/- for SC/ ST/ PwD candidates and Rs.200/- for others). After completing the application form, you can take a printout of your application for your reference. There is no need to send the hard copy to us. Apply online from at website http://mtechadm.iitm.ac.in and clicking the 'Login' link. Website Opens on 7 th March, 2016 and closes on 15 th April, 2016 at 23:59 Hrs. Read the eligibility criteria carefully and choose your options (Maximum of 8 choices). Note that you are eligible to apply only for N-HTTA programmes (Programmes ending with "N") only. Question 13: I am an OBC candidate and I do not have valid OBC certificate at the moment. What should I do? You will be considered under General' category during the Rounds of Offers till you submit the OBC certificate. Question 14: I am an IIT graduate with a B.Tech. degree. How do I apply Online? Follow the procedure in the Question 11. Check your eligibility based on your CGPA given Question 5 and also in the Section 2.7B on page4 of the Information Brochure. Follow the procedures mentioned in FAQ:1(a) if Indian Nationals Follow the procedures mentioned in FAQ:1(b) if Foreign Nationals Upload your complete Grade Sheet(s)#. # - Upload scanned pdf file with maximum size of 2 MB. In case of multiple scanned pages merge them into single pdf file not exceeding greater than 2 MB. 5

Question 15: What is HTTA? What is N-HTTA? Financial assistance in the form of Half-Time Teaching Assistantship (HTTA) at the rate of Rs.12,400/- per month (tenable for a maximum period of 24 months) will be awarded to Indian nationals doing the M.Tech. programmes, subject to Institute rules. HTTA students are required to assist the department for 8 hours of work per week related to academic activities of the department such as laboratory demonstration, tutorials, evaluation of assignments, test papers, seminars, research projects, etc. The number of seats available under HTTA is indicated in Table 1. A few seats are available without HTTA (N-HTTA, i.e., without any financial assistance) in some M.Tech. Programmes as indicated in Table 1. Provision exists for the candidates (Indian Nationals) who have joined M.Tech. Streams under N- HTTA category to convert to HTTA at the end of one semester depending on the vacancies in HTTA category and on the basis of their performance in the first semester examinations. Question 16: Can I apply for both HTTA and N-HTTA seats? Candidates, who are Indian Nationals, can opt for either HTTA (code ending with Y), or N-HTTA (Code ending with N), or both, in a particular M.Tech. Programme. The eligibility criteria for HTTA and N-HTTA categories are the same. Please note that the total number of choices is 8, including HTTA and N-HTTA programmes. Question 17: I have two valid GATE scorecards of GATE 2015 and GATE 2016 for the same paper. Which scorecard shall I use? It is advisable to register with the higher GATE Score. Question 18: I have two valid GATE scorecards of GATE 2015 and GATE 2016 for two different papers. Can I use both scores? Application Form is valid only for one GATE Score. If candidates intend to use both GATE Scores, they have to apply separately (paying application fee twice) with each GATE Score. They can fill the choices individually. If a candidate is given admission based on a particular GATE Score. If candidates choose to use any one of the GATE Scores, they can apply only once. Question 19: Is there any limit on the number of programmes one can apply to? Yes, a candidate can apply for a maximum of 8 programmes per application form. 6

Question 20: Do I need to post my application and attachments? NO, If applied through http://mtechadm.iitm.ac.in you need not have to send the hard copy of the application. Question 21: Do I have to pay the semester registration fees along with the application form? No, only the application fee (Rs. 100 for SC/ ST/ PwD (Indian Nationals only) or Rs. 200 for others) should be paid online at the online application portal. You may have to additionally pay the charges incurred for Netbanking or Credit/ Debit cards or as applicable for a payment portal. Question 22: How will I know the status of my application? You can check the application status by logging in to the Online Application Portal using your login id and password, sent to you by email/sms. Question 23: Can I change the preferences after submitting the application? NO. You cannot change the preferences after submitting the online application. Therefore, you should be extremely careful in selecting your preferences. Question 24: I have missed to take a print out of my application at the end of my application process. How will I get access to it? You can view/print the application form later by logging in the Online Application Portal. Question 25: Who are required to come for suitability test? And when? The short-listed candidates for suitability test shall report at the respective Departments, IIT Madras, Chennai and appear before the committees on 30 April, 2016 (Saturday). Suitability test is required for the following M.Tech. Programmes: Candidates with XE GATE Paper, applying to AM1, AM2, CE2 and CE4 Programmes. ZE/ZS candidates must upload a complete list of courses studied during their degree Programme with syllabi. They may be considered for admission to the 7

Programmes relevant to the discipline of their qualifying degree as decided by the concerned Departments. If they are considered, they may have to take suitability test/interview. If it is needed, candidates will be informed via SMS/e-mail. Candidates having degrees obtained through Distance Education/Correspondence Mode, who apply to AM1, AM2, CS1, MM1, OE1, OE2 and PE1. All candidates applying to OE1, OE2 & PE1 Programmes. Question 26: What is meant by degree obtained by distance/ correspondence mode? Distance education means online education via mail or electronic media in which students study the material on their own following various instructional delivery models (Synchronous or asynchronous) using internet or TV. Correspondence mode is a part of Distance education/ mode Question 27: I have obtained my qualifying degree through Distance Education/Correspondence Mode. It was mentioned that the Departments will conduct Test/Interview. When will the Test/Interview be conducted? The shortlisted candidates having degrees obtained through Distance Education/ Correspondence Mode, who apply to AM1, AM2, CS1, MM1, OE1, OE2 and PE1 are required to report at the office of the Head of the respective Department, IIT Madras on 30 April, 2016 (Saturday). Question 28: When and how do I know whether I have been offered a programme? First set of offers are likely to be made by 10 th May, 2016. Information will be sent by Email/SMS and will be displayed on the online portal. Second and subsequent offers may be made depending on the availability of the seats. Question 29: What are the options available when I receive an offer of admission? After an offer of admission is made, the candidates have four options in the Online Application Portal: 8

a. Accept and Freeze: This option should be selected if the candidate is satisfied with the present offer and does not like to be considered for upgrading to higher preferences in the subsequent round(s) of admission. Candidates selecting this option WILL NOT be considered in the subsequent round(s) of admission. Candidates who get the programme as their first choice will have to choose either 'Accept and Freeze or Reject and Quit only. After clicking the 'Accept and Freeze' option, the candidate need to make online payment of Institute Fee as applicable to them. However, if the candidate withdraws later, Processing Fee of Rs. 1000/- will be retained and the remaining amount would be refunded. b. Accept with Upgrade: This option should be selected if the candidate likes to accept the present offer and also would like to be considered for upgrading to higher preferences in the subsequent round(s) of admission. After clicking the 'Accept with Upgrade' option, the candidate needs to make online payment of Institute Fee as applicable to them. However, if the candidate withdraws later, Processing Fee of Rs. 1000/- will be retained and the remaining amount would be refunded. c. Reject with Upgrade: This option should be selected if the candidate likes to decline/ reject the present offer, but would like to be considered for upgrading to higher preferences in the subsequent round(s) of admission. After clicking the 'Reject with Upgrade' option, a One Time Password (OTP) is generated by the system and sent by SMS to the registered mobile phone of the candidate. This OTP has to be entered correctly for confirming the decision of the candidate. d. Reject and Quit: This option should be selected if the candidate likes to decline/ reject the present offer and does not want to be considered in the subsequent round(s) of admission. Candidates selecting this option WILL NOT be considered in the subsequent round(s) of admission. After clicking the Reject and Quit option, a One Time Password (OTP) is generated by the system and sent by SMS to the registered mobile phone of the candidate. This OTP has to be entered correctly for confirming the decision of the candidate. NOTE that if a candidate chooses this option then he/she will not be considered for Admission process any further. Please NOTE that after the release of third round of offers, candidates who wish to be considered for the fourth and subsequent rounds should re-register by clicking 'Re-Register' button on the M. Tech. Application Portal. This re-registration are meant for only those who have already registered at the M. Tech Application Portal on and before 15 th April, 2016.Those who do not 'Re-Register' will not be considered 9

for the subsequent M. Tech. Admission offers. There is no payment for reregistration! Question 30: What are the steps to be taken when I accept an offer of admission? Once you decide to accept the offer you will directed to the payment page wherin you will make online payment of Institute Fee (Refer Table 5 in Information Brochure). Please note that you may have to bear the additional charges pertaining to the use of payment portal. The charges may vary depending on the use of Netbanking or Credit/ Debit cards. Also see Question 33. Question 31: Can I withdraw after accepting the offer? How about getting the Institute Fee refunded? A Candidate can withdraw the offer of admission by clicking the 'withdraw' button on M.Tech Admission Portal. If a candidate has accepted the offer by paying the Institute fee in any of the Admission Rounds conducted before the Admission Day (25th July, 2016) will get the Institute fee refunded deducting Rs. 1000/- charged as processing fee. If the Additional Round after the Admission Day (26th July, 2016) is operated, and a candidate accepts the offer made in this Additional Round and pays the Institute fee, he/ she will not get any refund of the Institute fee paid. Question 32: After declining/rejecting the offer, can I be considered for further offers? NO Question 33: Is there any chance for me to move up in my preference and what am I supposed to do for that? There is a possibility of upgrading the branch/ Programme for the candidates who have already accepted the offer of admission, depending upon the subsequent availability of vacancies subsequently. In order to be considered for upgrade, the appropriate option like 'Accept with Upgrade'(in this case payment of Institute Fee has to be made) or 'Reject with Upgrade' should be selected at the Online Application Portal. Please note that during the upgrading, depending on the indicated order of preference, it is possible for a 10

candidate to switch from a HTTA seat to N-HTTA seat if N-HTTA is higher in order of preference given by the candidate. Question 34: Can I send a photocopy of my GATE scorecard along with the offer acceptance? NO need. Question 35: What is Additional Round of offers after the Admission Day? Who would be considered for this? Does a candidate have to be present in person on the day of Additional Round of offers? When the candidates who are given admission during first, second and subsequent rounds of offers withdraw from the programmes, the seats get vacant. Though subsequent round(s) of offers try to fill these vacancies, there is a possibility that some seats may get vacant after the Admission Day (25 th July 2016: Monday). If the seats fall vacant, Additional Round of Offers will be conducted on 26 th July 2016 (Tuesday) to fill these remaining vacancies. Candidates who could not secure admission in the first, second and subsequent rounds of offers before the Admission Day, will be considered for this Round. Unlike the "Spot Round" conducted last year, candidates are NOT required to report In Person for the Additional Round. The Additional Round will be similar to the round of offers conducted before the Admission Day. Please note that Additional Round of offers after the Admission Day will be operated only when there are any unfilled seats, and its operational details will be available on the M. Tech Admission site: http://mtechadm.iitm.ac.in Question 36: Can I change to another M. Tech. Programme after a semester? NO. Question 37: Will I be eligible for conversion to Ph. D. Programme? Yes. M.Tech. students will be eligible for conversion to Ph.D. if they satisfy the following criteria: The candidate should have successfully completed a minimum of 2 semesters in the M.Tech. programme. 11

The candidate should have a minimum CGPA of 8.0 in the prescribed M. Tech. courses. A committee duly constituted by the Head of the Department will consider such applications for conversion to Ph.D. and make its recommendation. Question 38: I wish to apply under User Oriented M.Tech Programmes (UOP). How can I apply for M.Tech programmes?
