Lk Bb n CSMA/CD! Duplex and switched Ethernet have remved transmissin distance limits inherit in the riginal CSMA/CD Ethernet IEEE 802.1 bridging is cmmnly thught f as part f Ethernet, hwever is a different standard 1973-80s half-duplex Cable-Tree using CSMA/CD Half-Duplex Early 90s mve t duplex (pint t pint) n CSMA-CD Duplex Ethernet Switched Duplex Ethernet Alng with duplex Ethernet bridging became an integral part f Ethernet technlgy Wrkshp NGN and its Transprt Netwrks Kbe, 20-21 April 2006 11

Separate Finance and Engineering New standards IEEE P802.1ad and P802.1ah are defining Service VLAN (S-VLANs), extending tagging fr S-VLANs (I-TAGs), and backbne tunnel VLANs (B-VLANs) In the Mid 1980 multiple Ethernets were run t islate parts f the business Engineering Finance In the 1990s alng with duplex and switched Ethernet Virtual Bridged Ethernet(VLANs) was invented Tday virtual Bridged Ethernet is being expanded fr Prvider and Prvider Backbne Bridging t allw nesting VLANs Wrkshp NGN and its Transprt Netwrks Kbe, 20-21 April 2006 12

Class based QS fr Ethernet Ethernet f the 1980s was a best effrt delivery netwrk Hwever it became clear that nt all infrmatin has the same pririty. Ethernet therefre began mving t prvide ways t manage infrmatin differently fr different user classes. This stated in the early 802.1p wrk, hwever is nw cntinuing n many frnts. The MEF 10 Phase 1 service specificatin has specified bth traffic meters and perfrmance metrics fr Ethernet The IEEE P802.1ad prject is wrking n extensins t the riginal 802.1p cde pints t allw drp eligibility MEF services phase 2 prvides QS mdels fr multipint as well as definitins fr availability. Standards wrk n bandwidth allcatin is lagging Wrkshp NGN and its Transprt Netwrks Kbe, 20-21 April 2006 13

What the Ethernet wrld is nt flat? Each IEEE 802.1ah level encapsulates frames with a new MAC addresses and with a new service tag. Each IEEE 802.1ah nesting level summarizes the MAC addresses f the lwer level with a Backbne MAC address The higher level 802.1ah bridges frward n summarized addresses allwing indefinite scaling withut MAC lkup table explsin. VLAN ID Switching Pwerful but Dangerus IEEE 802.1ad allws fr VLAN ID switching By switching the 802.1ad VLAN IDs and the 802.1ah Service IDs it is pssible t have limitless VLAN scaling ver a glbal Ethernet Use f this technique cmplicates cntrl since frames within the netwrk must retain their cntext t be identified and traced. Limiting swapping t adminstrative bundaries allw unlimited scaling withut while keep cntrl cmplexity t a minimum. Ethernet Prtectin Switching Link recvery f 802.3 netwrks can be implemented tday using IEEE 802.3 link aggregatin prtcls. Ethernet switch nde recvery tday is handled by Rapid Spanning Tree(RSTP) and Multiple Spanning Tree(MSTP). IEEE prject 802.1aq will replace MSTP with a link state prtcl fr shrtest path bridging allwing mre extensive link and nde recvery. Wrk currently nging at the G.8031 is defining Ethernet prtectin switching. Future wrk will likely extend t Ethernet ring recvery. Wrkshp NGN and its Transprt Netwrks Kbe, 20-21 April 2006 17

A Prvisined P2P P2P Ethernet Transprt Prvider Backbne Transprt is a variatin n Prvider Backbne Bridging which allws carriers t prvisin engineered and prtected Pt-Pt service instance. PBT perates by adding cnfigured rutes t a nearly standard Prvider Backbne Bridged Netwrk. The PBT prvisining and management system allws a carrier t prvisin pint-t-pint trunks and services within the Ethernet netwrk. Each trunk is identified by a 12 bit VLAN ID and a 46 bit destinatin address. Cnclusins New technlgies in develpment fr Ethernet by the IEEE and thers including the ITU and MEF are breaking the barriers t scaling and mass deplyment f Ethernet as an end-t-end carrier infrastructure. The IEEE 802.1ah and assciated standards prvide the fundatin fr scaling prvider Ethernets t almst limitless size. Wrkshp NGN and its Transprt Netwrks Kbe, 20-21 April 2006 20
