Aerial Located directly north of Downtown Washington, CityMarket at O is a 1 million-square foot adaptivereuse project that will include over 86,239 square feet of retail, 552,854 square feet of housing, a 181-room select service hotel, and 500 parking spaces. CityMarket at O will serve as the catalyst for the revitalization of the Shaw neighborhood, one of Washington s oldest commercial, residential, and cultural districts. This urban infill project features two historic elements that are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and are critical to the design and identity of the project: O Street Market and 8th Street, NW. The O Street Market constructed in 1881 was one of several public markets that served Washingtonians during the 19th Century. Over the years, the Market served as a place for residents to meet, socialize, and buy and sell goods and food items. The L Enfant Plan, developed in 1771, is considered to be one of America s top accomplishments is city planning. The Plan laid out a street grid for the Federal City that included spacious roadways and open vistas. 8th Street was part of the original L Enfant Plan. CityMarket at O The O Street Market, which was severally damaged by a heavy snowfall in 2003, will be restored and returned to its original use as a market and gathering place, and incorporated into a new, state-ofthe-art 72,000-square foot Giant Food store. 8th Street will be reopened as a 100-foot wide pedestrian and vehicular right-of-way with residential buildings on each side of the street. CityMarket at O spans the two city blocks bounded by 7th, 9th, O, and P Streets, NW in the heart of Washington, DC. The site is only one and one half blocks from the Mt. Vernon/7th Street metro stop. CityMarket at O is less than a 10 minute walk to the City s central business district and the Verizon Center, the hub of the City s entertainment district, and one block north of the Washington Convention Center. The 2.3 million square foot Convention Center hosts over a million visitors a year.
