Answer Key 1a. puberty or adolescence 1b. Acceptable answers could include: -the period of growth and changes in the human body that occurs between eight and seventeen 1c. Acceptable answers could include: -As an adolescent, you may experience an increase in your appetites; you may be hungry all the time. You may become more active during the day, and require more sleep at night. Some people experience a very rapid change in height and weight, sometimes called a growth spurt. Their muscles and bones get larger, and their favorite clothes don t fit anymore. They may feel awkward, because their hands and feet are growing faster than the other parts of their body. Girls start to develop breasts, and their hips begin to round out. Boys shoulders widen, and their voices change, sometimes cracking as they begin to deepen. Both boys and girls develop hair under their arms and around their genitals. 2a. growth spurt 2b. Acceptable answers could include: -a growth spurt causes your body to have a very rapid change in height and weight during adolescence 2c. Acceptable answers could include: -Adolescents may feel awkward because of the changes in their bodies. Clothes that used to fit, don't. Their hands and feet are growing faster than the other parts of their bodies. 3a. Acceptable answers could include: -boy - shoulders widen, voices change, develop hair under arms and around genitals -girl - develop breasts, hips begin to round out, hair develops under arms and around genitals 3b. Acceptable answers could include: -boy - shoulders widen, voices change, develop hair under arms and around genitals -girl - develop breasts, hips begin to round out, hair develops under arms and around genitals 3c. Acceptable answers could include: -boy - shoulders widen, voices change, develop hair under arms and around genitals -girl - develop breasts, hips begin to round out, hair develops under arms and around genitals 4a. hormones 4b. Acceptable answers could include: -chemical substances, produced in the body by endocrine glands, that are transported by the blood to other organs to stimulate their function 4c. Acceptable answers could include: -chemical substances, produced in the body by endocrine glands, that are transported by the blood to other organs to stimulate their function and adrenaline, estrogen, insulin, and testosterone are all hormones 5 th Grade, The Human Body Colorado Core Knowledge Assessments 6

5a. ductless glands or endocrine glands 5b. Acceptable answers could include: -ductless glands or endocrine glands and duct glands 5c. Acceptable answers could include: -ductless glands or endocrine glands and duct glands -duct gland examples- salivary and sweat glands, endocrine gland examples pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, adrenal -The difference between ductless (endocrine) glands and duct glands is that duct glands secrete their substances through channels called ducts, while the endocrine(ductless) secrete their substances directly into the blood stream. 6a. 1. pituitary 2. thyroid 3. pancreas 4. adrenal 6b. Acceptable answers could include: 1. bottom of the brain, secretes hormones that control other glands and regulate growth 2. below the voice box, secretes a hormone that controls the rate at which the body burns and uses food 3. by the stomach, secretes a hormone called insulin that regulates how the body uses and stores sugar 4. by the upper part of each kidney, secretes a hormone called adrenaline, especially when a person is frightened or angry, causing rapid heartbeat and breathing 6c. Acceptable answers could include: 1. Too much hormone results in exaggerated bone growth, exceptionally tall or a giant, too little hormone may cause pituitary dwarf of normal proportions but small stature 2. Too much hormone results in hyperthyroidism causing feeling hotter, trouble sleeping, and irregular heartbeats, too little hormone results in hypothyrodism where weight could increase, or trouble losing weight, fatigued 3. Too much hormone results in hypoglycemia or low blood sugar causing nausea, nervous feeling, cold, clammy skin, rapid heart beat for mild cases, if more severe could result in death if not treated, Too little hormone results in diabetes causing excessive thirst, hunger, urination and weight loss 4. Too much hormone could cause Cushing's syndrome causing obesity, slowed growth, acne, high blood pressure, Too little hormone causes weakness, fatigue, abdominal pain, deepening of skin color 7a. scrotum, testes, penis, semen, urethra 7b. MALE - scrotum, testes, penis, semen, urethra FEMALE - fallopian tubes, menstruation, ovaries, uterus, vagina 7c. Acceptable answers could include: 1. the slender tubes through which ova pass and where fertilization takes place 2. the external pouch or sac located behind the penis 3. the periodic discharge of the blood enriched lining of the uterus 5 th Grade, The Human Body Colorado Core Knowledge Assessments 7

4. the two organs in the male reproductive system that produce sperm and testosterone 5. the paired organs in the female reproductive system that produce ova and release certain hormones, such as estrogen 6. the pear shaped organ in the female reproductive system where the embryo or fetus develops until birth 7. the organ of the male reproductive system through which semen passes out of the body during sexual intercourse 8. the sticky white fluid produced in the male reproductive system that carries sperm 9. the tube like passageway in the female that connects the external genitals with the uterus 10. the tube through which urine moves and acts as the passageway for semen 8a. fertilization, embryo 8b. Acceptable answers could include: -intercourse, fertilization, zygote, implantation of zygote in uterus, pregnancy, embryo, fetus, newborn 8c. Acceptable answers could include: -During sexual intercourse, the male places his penis inside the female s vagina. The semen shoots out of his penis and into her vagina, and the sperm swim toward her uterus. After reaching her uterus, they swim toward the fallopian tubes, where one sperm cell and only one is admitted through the egg s outer covering. When egg and sperm join, fertilization has occurred. If the egg is fertilized, it develops into a zygote, which travels down the fallopian tube and implants itself in the wall of the uterus. Here it grows into an embryo and further develops into a fetus. The fetus grows inside its mother for nine months, until it is developed enough to live in the outside world. When it is born, a baby needs constant care and attention. 5 th Grade, The Human Body Colorado Core Knowledge Assessments 8
