Dear Friends and Colleagues, On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I am honored and delighted to welcome you to the First International Conference "Pharmacy today and tomorrow - Theory and Practice", held in Lublin, Poland from 11-12 June 2015. Population ageing and the increasing number of patients suffering from chronic illnesses have profound implications for contemporary and future healthcare. The new, complex challenges demand innovative solutions for ensuring sustainable development in an inclusive manner. Thus, significant advances in providing pharmaceutical services have been proposed to improve the effectiveness and safety of pharmacotherapy. Moreover, a number of technological innovations have been developed to ensure the highest quality and safety of new drug products. The Conference provides the premier interdisciplinary forum to discuss the most recent trends, concerns and practical challenges encountered, as well as solutions adopted in the fields of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics. Our primary objective is to bring together researchers from universities, research centers and companies, as well as health care professionals from the East and the West. The Conference will cover many aspects of healthcare and aims to bridge perspectives from various disciplines of medical sciences. The conference will include plenary lectures, oral and poster presentations, as well as a panel discussion concerning the role of a pharmacist in the healthcare system. Attending the conference will be an excellent opportunity to share your invaluable experience and/or theoretical knowledge on pharmacy and medicine. Moreover, the conference will allow for networking with colleagues from Kazakhstan, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia and Ukraine, representing broad research interests and expertise in their respective fields. A post conference tour to explore Lublin's cultural heritage is also included. Lublin, the largest city in eastern Poland, is often called a "Gate to the East", since the city hosts many events aiming to link the East and the West in respect to cultural, scientific and political activity. Program of the conference includes a tour of the historical Old Town, housing many restaurants and pubs in a very picturesque setting. I firmly believe that you will enjoy the magical atmosphere of Lublin, a city where the past intertwines with the present and the East meets the West. What to see in Lublin Historical monuments within the Old Town: th Cracow Gate, one of the two original city gates, built in 14 century is the symbol of the city. On the top of the gate you can see the old clock and the balcony, where a trumpeter plays the city's bugle call, every day since 1686. The Fortuna Cellar is located in Rynek 8, in a town house that once belonged to the influential noble Lubomelski family. While a modern exhibition in cellar's nine rooms presents Lublin's history, the tenth room is a former winery with a 16th century renaissance polychrome. The castle of Lublin, shown on the cover of this leaflet, has been erected in a gothic style by Casimir the Great and later rebuilt in the neogothic style. We recommend visiting the th 13 century Romanesque donjon with a vista point as well as the Chapel of Holy Trinity. The Chapel of Holy Trinity features beautiful Russo-Byzantine frescoes dating back to 1418. The Chapel is a must-see, since its interior is a unique example of the co-existence of East and West European cultures in Lublin. Lublin Cathedral and Trinity Tower. The cathedral, located at the edge of the Old Town is a unique baroque church with wall paintings. The Trinitarian tower, adjacent to the cathedral offers a vista point, providing a beautiful city panorama. Other historical monuments: Open Air Village Museum comprises over 50 historic buildings, e.g a mansion, orthodox church, jewish shop, as well as rural buildings representing various regions such as Lublin Upland, Roztocze, Vistula River region, Podlasie and Bug River region. A newly refurnished country town presents Poland's diverse cultural heritage from the time of the Second Republic (early th 20 century). Maria Curie Skłodowska University's botanic garden covers an area of 25 hectares and features some 6.5 thousand plant species from the whole world. June is the best time to enjoy its superb floral compositions and picturesque river bank. The German concentration camp in Lublin in the district of Majdanek was built in 1941 to hold prisoners from nearly 30 countries, mostly Poland, Czech Republic and former Soviet Union. The camp operated until 23rd of July 1944, when it was liberated by the Red Army.
