The Big Picture Why to Care About SAP HANA Virtualized The option to virtualized helps customers to lower TCO, simplify their IT operation decreased the time-to-value for solution development and increased their agility According to Gartner, the majority of server OS workloads are virtualized (with an average of 74.9% as of mid-2013), with VMware being the leading platform in enterprise x86 server virtualization (approx. market share of 79.3%). Source: Gartner Survey Analysis: x86 Server Virtualization, Worldwide, 2013 (G00256944) Source: Gartner Magic Quadrant for x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure, July 2014 (G00262673) 5
The Big Picture What virtualization can do For customers already standardizing on VMware virtualization technology, running SAP HANA virtualized offers additional options for planning and managing their systems landscapes Ease of HW replacement / Avoidance of re-certification of OS & SAP installations Zero downtime preventive maintenance Running multiple workloads on the same host appliance (system consolidation) Low-cost HA capabilities in Dev & Test environments Fast Provisioning and Decommissioning of entire VM, including SAP HANA database Snapshots and sharing of VM possible Separation of IT Ownership (HW and SW layer) 6
SAP HANA Virtualized General Conditions and Constraints The following are general conditions and constraints for running SAP HANA virtualized: Limited to scale-up scenario only (scale-out / multi-node database installations are not supported). Limited to 2 and 4 socket certified SAP HANA appliance hardware (large 8 socket appliances are not supported) CPU & memory overprovisioning must not be used. SAP HANA installation was either done by an SAP Business One HANA consultant on SAP HANA certified hardware and successfully verified with the SAP HANA hardware configuration check tool (SAP HANA Tailored Datacenter Integration option), or system had been delivered pre-configured as certified SAP HANA appliance, with hypervisor installed by SAP HANA hardware partner. See SAP Note 1788665 - SAP HANA Support for Virtualized Environments 7
SAP HANA Virtualized Comparison SAP HANA virtualized vs. native, based on VMware vsphere 5.5 During performance analysis the degradation compared to bare metal. majority of tests stayed within 12% performance However, there are around 100 low-level performance tests in the test suite exercising various HANA kernel components that exhibit a performance degradation of more than 12%. This indicates that there are particular scenarios which might not be suited for HANA on VMware. Only 12% difference between native HANA and virtual HANA on SAP certified benchmark 8
SAP HANA Virtualized Sizing Guidelines Each SAP HANA instance / virtual machine needs to be sized according to the existing SAP HANA sizing guidelines for SAP Business One, powered by SAP HANA and recommendations of hypervisor vendor. General conditions & constraints: CPU & memory overprovisioning must not be used Data throughput and latency KPIs have to be met for each virtual machine Same core-to-memory ratio applies as for bare-metal HANA on VMware Sizing Process: An initial system sizing is completed using the SAP Business One sizing guide from the PartnerEdge Portal. Once the initial sizing numbers for memory have been determined, they can be used to define the size of a virtualized SAP HANA virtual machine and the size of the vsphere host. Therefore, follow the sizing guidelines provided in the SAP HANA Best Practices Guide for corresponding hypervisor. 9

SAP HANA Virtualized Application Process for Controlled Availability Customers interested in running multiple SAP HANA VMs on VMware vsphere 5.5 in production can apply for Controlled Availability of SAP HANA production support by sending an email to: sap_hana_tailored_data_center_integration@sap.com This email should contain High-level scenario description and timeline (e.g. planned Go-live date) Expected database size (compressed HANA DB size, number of users) Hardware spec (HW vendor, server t-shirt size), Planned HA/DR setup (if applicable), Contact details(incl. SAP account number) for further communication All information given will be kept confidential and is only being used during the selection process. Once accepted, customer will get access to restricted SAP Note, officially stating SAP HANA support for the presented scenario. 14
