I had the pleasure to coach Bas and another BSO/Aerospace colleague when they were working onsite at the European Space Agency's (ESA) scientific and technical centre in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, developing an expert system to support astronauts in diagnosing and recovering from cabin air pressure system failures. Bas' approach was highly pragmatic, avoiding the danger of being dazzled by the then-novel expert systems technology. Because Bas was educated as a geologist, we used to say that Bas had his head above the clouds but his feet firmly on the ground. He hasn't changed.
