6 AF s Partners In 2006 ESA IAP and Air Forces of Belgium, France, Germany and The Netherlands started a preliminary assessment in order to establish a unified approach to improve knowledge on birds migration ESA FlySafe Concept aiming at reducing bird strike risks for AFs operations through the combination of space and non space systems was discussed and agreed with FlySafe Air Forces Formal Cooperation Agreements for the FlySafe project were ratified between ESA Director General and: Royal Netherlands Air Force Command Belgian Chief of Defence French Ministere de la Defence German Ministry of Defence

7 User Needs and Project Objectives Through consultations with Air Forces experts the following needs were identified as drivers for FlySafe implementation: Real Time Generation and Reporting of Bird Strike Warning Messages (BIRDTAM) for on-route operations Prediction of Birds Presence (Forecast) for on-route operations Real Time Detection of Birds Presence at and near airport FlySafe objectives: Develop a proof of concept prototype of a bird warning system for improving flight safety & increasing AF flight operation time in northwest Europe by: Improving existing en route bird detection systems Reducing human dependency Developing bird forecast models Developing tools for bird flight activity detection at and near airports BIRDTAM Cross border harmonization
