DIG YOUR OWN F.A.Q. Q. What should I wear? A. When going to either mine site, we recommend that you wear old clothes, sturdy shoes and gloves. Keep in mind that the red clay can stain clothing. Q. What tools should I bring? A. We can loan you buckets, garden type trowels, cultivators and pry bars for a refundable deposit. Or you are welcome to bring your own tools if you wish. If bringing hammers be sure to include eye protection. Q. What else should I bring? A. Other items that you might bring are hats, sunscreen, and bug spray. Always bring water when you go digging and maybe a snack or lunch. Additionally, We suggest that the following be considered when preparing for your day at the mine. Wear old clothes, sturdy shoes and bring heavy-duty gloves. Eye protection is always a good safety practice! We have pry bars and buckets that can be used, however bring something to carry your crystals home in. You can bring additional tools to move the dirt around and perhaps hammers and chisels to remove crystals from the sandstone. Your group is welcome to bring lunch or other refreshments, some are available at the warehouse. There are no toilet facilities at the mines. Due to the limited number of groups that we allow to visit the mines, there is always an abundance of crystals to find. You will have hard rock mining opportunities just like we do. We cannot guarantee open veins or pockets on any given day. Effective October 1, 2000, The Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) Part 48, Subpart B, Code of Federal Regulations stipulate the following: Unescorted visitors, regardless of company affiliation will be trained in "Hazard Recognition" at least once every twelve months before they are permitted to enter the mine.
