1 WHAT WILL I BE 2 LEARNING IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE THIS ACADEMIC YEAR? GCSE English Language allows students to demonstrate your ability to use English in real life contexts. You will investigative and analyse language and draw upon your own personal experience both in the Spoken Language module and Creative Writing Tasks. Your Of Mice and Men module will allow you to analyse characterisation and the author s craft in depth. WHICH EXAM BOARD/ SYLLABUS WILL I BE FOLLOWING THIS YEAR IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE? AQA English Language This year, the teaching of English Language has changed In the past, pupils have been assessed through Coursework and an exam. From now on, Coursework is no more! Instead you will be assessed through an exam and CONTROLLED ASSESSMENTS which MUST be completed in school under STRICT guidance.

We have already decided that you will complete the task based on our reading of prose Of Mice and Men Section B: Creative Writing 15% In this part of the course you will complete two tasks based on personal and imaginative writing. UNIT 2 SPEAKING, LISTENING CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT Section A: Speaking & Listening 20% In this part of the course you will be required to complete three Speaking and Listening tasks: Individual extended contribution, Group activity, Drama focused Unit 3c: SPOKEN LANGUAGE Spoken Language 10%: Analyse the SPOKEN language you use at home. In this part of the course you will study the SPOKEN LANGUAGE of a particular speaker/interviewer. You will be required to submit one piece of writing in response to a speaker/interviewer you have been focusing on.
5 WILL I BE ABLE TO IMPROVE MY CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT MARK? 6 WILL I HAVE A MOCK EXAM THIS YEAR? You will be able to sit a new controlled assessment task on a topic you have already covered if your teachers decide that you have underachieved on a particular piece. Your mock exam will take place in the summer term of Year 10. To do this you will need to attend after school sessions to prepare you for the controlled assessment, which will then be completed, again after school, under the supervision of a member of the English department. Work sheets and extra homework tasks will be given to you to complete independently as part of the preparation for your new controlled assessment.

Controlled Assessment: Of Mice and Men- Week beginning 3rd October- 14th October Spoken Language during the week beginning 5th December. It will take place on Tuesday P5 (6/12/11), Wednesday P5 (7/12/11) and be completed by the following Monday P6 (12/12/11). Your first point of call is your English teacher.
