PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of a minimum of 30 credit hours in the Office Professional degree program, 15 credit hours of which must be CAS/COS courses. A face-to-face meeting with Christie that you will schedule at least one semester prior to completing your internship. An internship site/placement approved by Christie. CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This course provides a supervised work experience coordinated with an office-related employer. A minimum of 225 hours of internship time is required for three credit hours. Three credit hours of internship experience are required for completion of the Office Professional A.A.S. degree. The course may be repeated three times. You do not report to a class. Instead, you report to your approved internship/job site. You will be required to meet with a Writing Center specialist at least once during the semester at LLCC s Main Campus schedule this appointment early to ensure a convenient time for you. Other materials and supplies include: Microsoft Office 2010 Professional (includes Access) ~ LLCC Registration for ~$65 for writing the 2 reports and completing the weekly time sheets Plenty of storage space (recommend Windows Live account)! Could also use a flash drive, external hard drive, etc.) Reliable Internet Service Provider (ISP) Internet Browser LLCC account free to all LLCC students check it at least 2-3 times per week! COS 240 does not use a Blackboard section
2 Page 2 of 5 COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: Obtain placement/employment in an office professional position. Apply training and knowledge gained in studies to internship. Demonstrate effective human relations skills. Apply principles of good grooming and business etiquette by displaying a professional image. Monitor job progress and evaluate performance. TOPICAL OUTLINE: Prepare (for internship) Meet face-to-face with Christie at least one semester prior to internship. Bring signed Waiver and Release and Eligibility documents printed from and your most-recent WebAdvisor transcript copied and pasted to a Word document. Create resume and cover letter. Locate internship site. Complete application and other employment documents, if requested by site. Submit full contact information of internship site supervisor to Christie. Enroll in COS 240, a closed class section that requires Christie s permission there is no cap on enrollments as long as you have a location and have met all the prerequisites, you typically get Christie s approval to enroll in the class. Sign the LLCC contract agreement. Perform (the tasks listed on the job description that you and site supervisor create) Create a job description during your first week on-the-job. Determine your weekly work schedule with your site supervisor. Notify your site supervisor of any absences they rely on you to complete the work. Complete 225 clock hours at the internship site; do not include the time you are at lunch unless it is a luncheon meeting you attend with your site supervisor. Submit Weekly Employment Form Time Sheet by the end of each week Write two reports Plan early to meet with an LLCC Writing Center specialist at least once during the semester. Details about LLCC s Writing Center can be found at Read and submit a review of how "Who Moved My Cheese" applies to your life and to the coursework you have completed at LLCC. You must select at least 10 scenarios. Write a report about how coursework taken for LLCC Office Professional degree has affected your ability to perform during your internship; also provide program changes that should be made. Improve Improve your skills based on results of mid-term and final evaluations. CLASSROOM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES There is no scheduled class. You report to your internship site, abide by the guidelines for both the internship site and LLCC, and document 225 clock hours of employment. Additionally, you will be required to meet with a Writing Center specialist at least once during the semester at LLCC s Main Campus schedule this appointment early to ensure a convenient time for you.
3 Page 3 of 5 EVALUATION METHODS: Students will complete and submit on time: Weekly Employment Form Time Sheet sent each week to Christie documenting 225 clock hours (20%) Mid-term Evaluation sent by Christie and completed by site supervisor (20%) Final Evaluation sent by Christie and completed by site supervisor (20%) 8-10 page review of Who Moved My Cheese that includes at least 10 scenarios (20%) 8-10 page report related to coursework and your internship (20%) There is NO final exam required for your internship! There is no extra credit for COS 240. Evaluation will be based on your total percent earned on each of the five items listed above during the semester. Each item is worth a maximum of 20% of the total available. A (90% - 100%) B (80% - 89%) C (70% - 79%) D (60% - 69%) F ( 0% - 59%) ATTENDANCE POLICY: Report to job site and provide 225 clock hours of documented employment at internship site. Determine your hours on a daily/weekly basis with site supervisor. Notify your site supervisor and Christie of any absences. Meet with and document your appointment on LLCC s Main Campus with an LLCC Writing Center specialist for both papers. Include specialist s name/ /phone and date/time of your appointment(s). MAKE-UP POLICY At the discretion of your site supervisor, hours may be modified based on a schedule determined and approved by your site supervisor. There is no make-up for the two reports please submit them by the due date listed on the syllabus. GRADED REPORTS CRITERIA As part of a recommendation by the COS/CAS Advisory Committee, comprised of area managers and supervisors in the LLCC district, they all agree each time we meet that Office Professional students need to do more writing. To provide extra writing practice, there will be two papers for COS 240 that must meet or exceed acceptable writing standards. Please review the Writing Standards for 2 Papers rubric for criteria. STUDENTS WITH EXCEPTIONAL NEEDS: According to the LLCC s Board Policy Manual, the following procedures will be used: Lincoln Land Community College shall comply with The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of A college handbook of guidelines for the delivery of appropriate accommodations shall be available for student with disabilities. 4 Page 4 of 5 ACADEMIC HONESTY STATEMENT: According to the LLCC s Board Policy Manual, the following procedures will be used: Penalties for Violations of Academic Integrity - Having witnessed or otherwise identified an apparent violation of the academic integrity policy, the faculty member may either impose or recommend an appropriate penalty, depending upon the seriousness of the offense. Penalties for Academic Dishonesty - The instructor may impose any one of the following penalties: a written notice of warning, with a copy placed in the student s file a reduced grade on the assignment a grade of F (zero if graded numerically) for the assignment a reduced grade for the course a grade of F for the course If a student withdraws from a course after the dishonest behavior is observed, the instructor may change the grade to F. The instructor may recommend consideration of suspension or dismissal through the Student Judicial Process. EMERGENCY WEATHER PROCEDURES: According to the Staff Handbook here is the Inclement Weather Policy for LLCC, College administrators follow a strict policy in determining whether to close the College due to inclement weather. Once the decision is made, the media is contacted and appropriate staff notified. Closings usually follow one of three scenarios: Morning Closing If the weather conditions cause the closing of the College before the beginning of the class day, a decision will be made by 5:30 a.m. and an announcement of the closing will be called in to local radio and television stations for broadcast beginning at 6:00 a.m. Evening Closing If severe weather causes the cancellation of evening classes (those starting after 5:00 p.m.), the decision to close will be made by 3:00 p.m., with announcements on the radio and television stations by 3:30 p.m. Signs will be posted around campus regarding the closing, and staff will be notified. Immediate Closing If an immediate closing is necessary at any time during the day or evening, staff and students will be notified of the effective time of the closing, and announcements will be called in to local radio and television stations. Signs will be posted around campus. While LLCC may be closed, it is up to you to check with your site supervisor to see if their location is open for business.
5 DATE Week 1 Week 2 through Week 8 (Summer) or Week 16 (Fall/Spring) COS 240 SCHEDULE OF ASSIGNMENTS Page 5 of 5 ASSIGNMENT Read COS 240 syllabus carefully & get organized for your course Purchase or borrow the Who Moved My Cheese book for reading and completing one required report Submit site supervisor s name and full job contact information Christie your updated transcripts (copy from WebAdvisor and paste into a Word document and attach to ) Christie the job description you and your site supervisor created a detailed accounting of each day s job responsibilities on the Weekly Employment Form (customize the form so that it fits to one page when you preview it if necessary, remove Saturday/Sunday!) Be sure to provide the total hours for each day and then to add them up for the total hours worked for the week. Begin writing both papers a detailed accounting of each day s job responsibilities on the Weekly Employment Form (needs to be one page) Continue writing both papers Week 3 Week 4 (Summer) or Week 8 (Fall/Spring) Week 4 (Summer) or Week 8 (Fall/Spring) Week 5 (Summer) or Week 9 (Fall/Spring) Due by Monday at 9:00 a.m. Week 7 (Summer) or Week 15 (Fall/Spring) Week 8 (Summer) or Week 16 (Fall/Spring) Make an appointment with the LLCC Writing Center (located on LLCC s Main Campus) to have your papers reviewed for flow and consistency. It is up to you to review the spelling and grammar. Please remember, the Writing Center staff will NOT write the papers for you! Visit for details. If you are close to completion of 100 contact hours, be sure your supervisor has reviewed your mid-term evaluation with you and returned it to Christie s attention at LLCC Make needed corrections on your papers. Get them in final form as they are due next week. Turn in both papers as Word 2010 or newer documents as attachments to Christie s attention (christie.hovey@llcc.edu) Provide the name, address, and phone number of the Writing Center specialist who assisted you. Provide the date and time of your appointment with the Writing Center appointment. If you are close to completion of 225 contact hours, be sure your supervisor has reviewed your final evaluation with you and returned it to Christie s attention at LLCC Ensure all required work is complete. *This syllabus is subject to change based on learning, time, and internship constraints. If you are no longer enrolled in this or any class, please notify your instructor and LLCC Registration! You must officially withdraw from a course through LLCC Registration or you may end up receiving a failing grade.
