Phone: Office: ; Cell Best Contact COURSE OBJECTIVES: To provide students with some fundamental understanding of the problems and activities that manager must work through in order to perform their jobs well. CATALOG DESCRIPTION: An introduction to how managers coordinate human and material resources to achieve organizational goals. Effective management practices that can be applied to business, educational, governmental, hospital, social service organizations. REQUIRED TEXTS: (12 th edition) by Stephen Robbins and Mary Coulter Andrew J. DuBrin, published by Pearson, ISBN This book is available from many vendors, including the UNCG Bookstore Mgt 300 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. The student will differentiate between managerial and non- managerial employees

2 2. The student will explain the basics of at least three of the classical approaches to management 3. Given a specific case, the student will apply Contingency Theory and explain how it might be used to predict/explain behavior. 4. The student can discuss the importance of regional trading and the World Trade Organization to managing organizations. 5. The student can discuss the concept of social responsibility and enumerate some of the factors that govern socially responsible decisions. 6. The student will describe different decision-making styles and explain how biases affect decision-making. 7. The student will compare and contrast several approaches to goal setting. 8. The student will describe and explain three types of corporate strategies. TEACHING STRATEGIES: The teaching strategy for this course relies strongly the use of textbook materials, including self-assessments, on-line lectures, and discussion boards, two midterm exams and a final project in lieu of a final exam. This is an online course, but it IS NOT a self-paced course. There are assignments every week and each of them has a strictly enforced deadline. Procrastination is a grade killer in this course. Fair warning. EVALUATION METHODS AND GUIDELINES FOR ASSIGNMENTS: Exams 15% each): 30% Discussion Board Participation: 35% Final Exam: 35% EVALUATION AND GRADING: A number of approaches will be used to evaluate student outcomes and grade performance. Each student will be graded on two midterm tests, posts on the discussion board, and the final exam. Grading Scale: A B C D F below 60 A B C D A B C D The graded materials will be tied to the learning objectives in the following way.

3 Exams: (30% of the course grade). Two multiple-choice exams (40 to 60 questions each) will measure the student s knowledge of the basics of management theory. Accordingly, these exams will evaluate the student s knowledge of personal, behavioral and situational factors contributing to management effectiveness. The exams are open book but timed. The grade will be based on the percentage of correct answers. Group Discussion Board Posts: (35% of the course grade). Using discussion boards within the Blackboard system, students will discuss readings and discussions of contemporary management issues. Final Exam: (35% of the course grade). The final exam will cover all assigned chapters in the textbook. More emphasis is given to later chapters. GO TO NEXT PAGE

PARTICIPATION/ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are expected to keep up with the course schedule. Occasionally technology problems will arise so do not wait until the last minute to complete your assignments. Though the nature of an online course allows for some discretion over when course work is completed, some activities such as discussion boards have a limited time window (typically 9-14 days) and other activities such as exams have more specific time windows (typically less than 24 hours).
