Spring Professional Salary Guide 3 Spring Professional Asia 2014 Salary Guide The Spring Professional Salary Guide 2014 offers a comprehensive overview of salary information, job descriptions and trends across Asia in the sectors of Engineering, Information Technology, Supply Chain as well as Property and Construction. The salary data was researched through the involvement of Spring Professional consultants and experts across Asia, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. This collection of data was gathered through our specialists liaison with clients and candidates across the region, and benefits from our extensive experience in recruitment and human resources. The salary information in this guide are indicative and represent a reflection of the market places they cover. They are compiled and presented in an easy-to-read format for quick reference. Indeed, employers need to understand the employment market changes and skill sets which continue to evolve. While Europe was in the midst of recovery, Asia was undergoing rapid structural transformation, becoming increasingly integrated with the rest of the world and embracing technological advances. In the meantime, partly due to strong foreign and public investments, property markets in developed cities such as Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore have greatly developed through the past few years. The growing Asian economies had an impact on the job landscape and talent shortage. Throughout 2013, companies in Asia were actively recruiting in many different sectors such as construction, manufacturing, biomedical, transport, automotive, electronics, oil and gas, procurement and supply chain amongst many others. This guide covers an extensive array of specific job titles in the engineering, IT as well as Property and construction sectors across Asia. However, if you are looking for salary data that may not be covered, or if you want to find out more about Spring Professional Asia, please visit www.springasia.com. We hope that this 2014 Salary Guide will prove to be a useful tool for recruitment and salary references.

Spring Professional Salary Guide 4 Engineering: The future The Core of Modern Industry and the Pillar of Economy in Asia The Engineering industry across Asia will likely grow again across Asia in 2014. To match rapid economic growth, many Asian countries are facing an urgent need to upgrade their basic infrastructure, road networks, port facilities, housing and city planning. According to the Asian Development Bank, Asia would require US$3 trillion in infrastructure investment between 2011-2020. The semiconductor industry is expected to grow in 2014 as the market broadens from computers to include automobiles and medicine, which can lead to more diverse sources of revenue. This can protect companies from cyclical downturns. The growing healthcare sector also offers career paths that lead to generous compensation and a secure future such as biomedical engineering - a field that combines engineering expertise and specialized medical knowledge. The relocation of manufacturing from the West to the East, especially in China, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand, has transformed the region into the world s major exporter of manufactured electronic products. This has generated very strong demand for engineering services, particularly in the areas of mechanical and electrical, electronics and information technology. Singapore has also upgraded its economic growth forecast in November 2013 for the year, which was boosted by growth in the services and manufacturing sectors (driven mostly by electronics and transport engineering). The outlook for the oil and gas sectors is optimistic with enhanced growth expected, especially in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. Increased consumerism in Asia has led to an unrestrained demand for energy, refined products, chemicals and consumer goods, enhancing investment and modernisation of several key sectors such as automotive, aerospace and defence, consumer electronics, solar energy and the medical device sectors.

Spring Professional Salary Guide 5 IT: Great expectations The IT sector will continue to be the enabler of development and progress According to Forrester Research, Information Technology spending in Asia Pacific will rise by 4% in 2014, with an increase in expenditure by 8% in China and India in 2014, as well as a faster than expected growth in Japan. The International Data Corporation (IDC) highlighted that the Asia Pacific mobility market should continue to experience strong growth in 2014 as companies across the mobility ecosystem adapt to meet the demands of the Gen-C consumers. According to IT professionals, Asia Pacific market dynamics makes it the world s most exciting mobile market, especially in countries like China, where more consumers watch videos online than watch television. In ASEAN, mobile commerce, ecommerce, mcommerce are also increasing, with around 30% of transactions coming from mobile devices. Companies IT business models have also been changing according to user preferences. The IT sector will see an intensive integration into all aspects of the economy. Rapid growth has been observed in five segments of IT spending - devices, data centre systems, software, IT services and telecom services. This is particularly prominent in the areas of software development, including computer games, IT programming, IT consultancy, IT facilities management services, data processing, hosting activities and web portals. In China, vendors (especially locals) have strengthened their capabilities in the hardware space while multinational vendors face challenges meeting Chinese government security requirements. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), IT services spending in Asia will reach US$141.3bn by 2016. In Singapore, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become one of the main key contributors to the economy, with the industry projected to grow strongly according to the Singapore Infocomm Development Authority s (IDA) Intelligent Nation 2015 (in2015) plan. Taiwan s strategy to develop clean and sustainable energy has led to a constant search for engineering experts in software to invest in 7 industries: solar energy, LED lighting, wind power, hydrogen energy and fuel cells, biofuel, energy information and communications technology, and electric vehicles. Many corporations are also outsourcing their internal IT function, especially to countries such as Malaysia and China. Despite a slight increase in market concentration, the competition in Asia s IT services sector remains fierce and will continue to put pressure on company profits. However, while both IT hardware manufacturers and software companies have a significant presence in the region, the IT services sector has attracted the attention from both foreign and domestic companies over recent years. With many international IT companies in Asia, Spring Professional will support the industry s demand by proposing its expertise to hire the best. 1 A research house specialised in monitoring investment projects in all sectors and countries worldwide.

Spring Professional Salary Guide 6 Property & Construction: Asia s economic core Economic growth and structural transformation lead the job landscape Asia s continued growth has thus far, seem unabated. The second half of 2013 saw global activity and world trade forging ahead, and recent data has suggested that growth during this period was stronger than anticipated. While activity is expected to improve further in 2014-2015, based largely on the recovery in the advanced economies, it is the emerging markets that are drawing the attention of property investors. As urban development continues to increase rapidly, demand for real estate and construction development has been insatiable, particularly in China which is likely to become the world s largest construction market leading up to 2020. Similarly, the high demand for green buildings and infrastructure investments are projected to boost the outlook, especially in Hong Kong. The real challenge of most Asian construction and property markets however, is in the search of talent. Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore are all candidate driven markets with a very small pool of available and skilled candidates, to which salaries are inevitably linked to market demand and the available candidate pool. As such, developers are willing to offer higher market salaries in order to attract talent. As a consequence, salaries are rising quickly in the junior to mid-levels and remain competitively high at the top executive level. The industry is now moving to an apex where candidates can demand more from employers, who then need to go the extra mile in terms of remuneration, benefits and career progression to secure the best talent in the market. In terms of recruitment, there are a number of areas which appear to be in high demand in Asia, especially for asset managers across all sectors (with landlords wanting to drive best performance and attain the best yields). Corporate real estate functions on the other hand, have a high demand for talent in facilities, project, quality and transactions management professionals. From a country perspective, Hong Kong s construction is looking positive with several important projects such as the West Kowloon Culture project, a third runway for the Hong Kong International Airports and the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge project. Clients have successfully raised funds and are now seeking to build their teams and portfolios.

Spring Professional Salary Guide 7 Another growth example is China s current development plan, which has had a large impact on the Hong Kong office market. In fact, several head offices have moved out of first tier cities in China (Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen). This downsizing alongside the continuing effects of the global financial crisis, have reduced the number of office fit out projects in Hong Kong. Second tier third tier cities are a target for many developers, who view first tier cities such as Shanghai or Beijing being too saturated. This makes the demand for developers and retail experts extremely high, with most of the estate firms currently hiring in this field. Likewise, Singapore s retail sector and its interest for malls are expected to perform, thanks to a strong economy. However, the residential market is expected to slow down this year, notably due to the Monetary Authority of Singapore s cooling measures. Asia s economies are undergoing rapid structural transformation, becoming increasingly integrated with the rest of the world and embracing technological advances. These developments are changing Asia s jobs landscape reshaping the sectors where jobs are being created, the types of jobs available and the tasks that workers perform. Another mature market that has proved its worth in the investment market is Shanghai, a city ranked second most attractive market for investment. Widely perceived as a low-risk market for those unwilling to venture into lesser known territories, the city continues to draw international real estate investors. In Southeast Asia, Singapore s real estate market has proved resilient over recent years. Market commentators believe while 2014 should be another year of cautious optimism, the outlook continues to look brighter. Singapore has been an attractive financial centre, although transaction volumes in core commercial real estate have been relatively low in recent years. It is now thought that demand should increase due to limited supply and very stable rents. Singapore continues to be seen as a popular place for Asian investors to deploy capital and a transparent place for Western investors.
