LCC Student Demographics Enrollment of more that 20,000 Age Distribution* ~40% of student population is 18-21 yrs. ~30% of student population is 22-29 yrs. ~15% of student population is 30-39 yrs. Full-Time vs. Part-Time Student Enrollment* ~37% are full-time students ~63% are part-time students *Data from Fall 2012 enrollment 2

LCC Vision Serving the learning needs of a changing community Michigan s 3 rd largest among the 28 Serves more than 20,000 students a year First to develop accelerated program for military medic veterans and active duty military medics Named a Military Friendly School in 2012 1 of 2 accredited CC paramedic programs in MI 75% of the region s allied health professionals received their training at LCC 3

Historical Journey 2001 State of Michigan Project MOVE Effort to connect highly trained and recently separated veterans without formal academic credentials with employers and educators 2002 2004 Assessed transcripts from all branches for commonalities with 1 st year of the RN program (equal to the Practical Nurse program) 4

Historical Journey 2002 2004 (continued) Reviewed the Paramedic and Respiratory Therapist programs for admission to the Advanced Standing RN Track (historically only PN) Experienced barriers in accessing government military training documents in post 911 uncertainties Advanced Standing RN Track expanded to include licensed paramedics and respiratory therapists Decision to postpone inclusion of Military Medic until curricula can be reviewed 5

Historical Journey 2004 2008 Met with Michigan Veteran Affairs leaders to access curriculum Sought funding to develop curriculum crosswalk LCC met with Senator Levin and Congressman Rogers LCC submits project funding through earmark 6

Historical Journey 2009 LCC received federal grant to develop a Military Medic to Paramedic (MM2P) program Majority of the participants were Army 68W Basic crosswalks were completed prior to the pilot program Initial program did not include competency testing 7

Historical Journey January 2012 MM2P program redesigned incorporating lessons learned from the pilot Comprehensive crosswalks were developed to determine experiential credit qualifications Some veterans could waive 40-60% of MM2P program requirements based on experience and previous education Validated with competency based testing and assessment Innovative curriculum delivered via short modules Accelerated program >> about 6 months to complete 8

April 26, 2013 Frederick Vollrath, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Readiness and Force Management, visits LCC Historical Journey March 2013 Senator Carl Levin visits LCC, meets with students and faculty and is briefed on program progress 9

Historical Journey April 29, 2013 LCC representatives invited to the White House to present MM2P Program model to the Joining Forces Initiative on Military Credentialing and Licensing 10

National Recognition LCC Military Medic to Paramedic (MM2P) Curriculum Model was acknowledged by the US Department of Defense as the national model for awarding experiential college credit for military training and experience. 11

National Accreditation Paramedic Program Nationally accredited since 1995 by CAAHEP Based on recommendation by CoAEMSP Permits graduates to obtain the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic Nursing Program Nationally accredited through the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) 13

Beyond MM2P - Stackable Degrees Advanced Standing RN Program Advance standing allows candidates to complete the program in 10 11 months Concurrent enrollment in Michigan State University s BSN program is available Physician Assistant (Navy Corpsman - post Viet Nam) Eastern Michigan University (developing 2 + 3 program) Western Michigan University Other Avenues 14

Next Steps Adapt the experiential learning, competencybased testing model to other programs Develop crosswalks from military curricula to civilian college course requirements to provide transferable, nationally accepted college credit for prior learning Information Technology, Construction Trades, and Aviation (drones?) Provide free experiential credit for veterans Fully supported by the LCC Board of Trustees 16
