3 WHAT IS CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT? An innovative program for students who: Have earned a baccalaureate degree in another discipline; Desire to enter professional nursing and have been accepted into an Applied Associate of Science program in a VCCS school; Aspire to obtain the baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) in a timely manner; Need to remain in their own local community.

4 WHAT IS CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT? Requires that students be concurrently enrolled at the local community college and ODU to complete the BSN. Online courses for RN-to- BSN curriculum are completed while also following AAS nursing program curriculum. The result both nursing degrees are earned almost simultaneously.

5 HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS AAS students complete the nursing curriculum in two academic years at the community college. While enrolled in the AAS curriculum, students are enrolled in the RN-to-BSN courses. During each of the four semesters of the AAS curriculum During the summer between the first and second year The program is completed during the summer following the second year of the AAS program

6 HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS Following May graduation from the AAS program students are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN Following licensure as a RN and successful completion of all BSN courses (August) the concurrent enrollment students are awarded 33 additional credits in the BSN curriculum (at no tuition cost) and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

7 ENROLLMENT CRITERIA Students must Meet the requirements for admission to each institution. Seek concurrent enrollment both at the community college and at ODU (second baccalaureate degree student). Complete all nursing prerequisite courses prior to admission. Complete/meet all baccalaureate degree general education requirements prior to admission.

8 ADMISSION Upon admission to the concurrent enrollment program, students are asked to sign a compact agreement Acknowledges the rigors of the program Defines parameters of student progression General program information.

9 GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION To be successful, it is strongly suggested that students not hold full-time employment while completing this program. The credit hours assigned to an online course does not mean how easy the course maybe. It is estimated that at the baccalaureate level 1 credit hour relates to 15 hours per week of study.

10 GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION The BSN level nursing course instruction is provided in an online format Designed with the adult learner in mind; Class participation is asynchronous for the students' convenience; Students admitted to concurrent option are initially enrolled in courses as a single cohort; When live connection time with faculty and fellow students is required, a variety of times are arranged to allow the student to find a time that is convenient for their schedule.

11 GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION Monthly contact with advisors for the concurrent enrollment program required Community college advisor ODU advisor Contact maybe in person, phone or via computer.

12 STUDENT PROGRESSION The primary goal is to ensure that the student completes the entry-level nursing curriculum Must remain in good academic standing throughout program. The student will be withdrawn from the concurrent enrollment curriculum if A grade C or lower is earned in either the AAS or BSN program courses There is loss of student in good standing status in the AAS courses A failing grade is received for any of the nursing courses in either program

13 STUDENT PROGRESSION A student withdrawn from the concurrent enrollment program may seek readmission to the ODU RN>BSN curriculum upon completion of AAS program and attainment of an unencumbered RN license. Graduation from ODU occurs upon Completion of all BSN courses Success on the NCLEX-RN and submission of proof of licensure as a RN 33 experiential learning credits will not be awarded to the student until achievement of RN license

14 INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Each participating nursing program will supply a liaison person for the program who will be responsible for: Recruitment of 2 nd degree students and marketing of program. Advising for degree requirements. Mentoring of students within this program in their institution. Communicating student performance between the AAS and BSN programs.

15 PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION Phase 1 Spring 2010 Meetings were held with advisors for the nursing program at community colleges that expressed interest in the project ODU distance learning site directors were educated about the program and new applicant pool, and received instructions on program and recruitment Identification and advising of prospective applicants began.

16 PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION Phase 2 Fall students admitted to pre-pilot program from WCC 1 male, 1 female Male student dropped difficulty managing heavy course load with family responsibilities Female student graduated August 2012!

17 PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION Phase Expanded pilot project with 3 community college partners: TNCC, PVCC, and WCC To be a partner the community college nursing program had to be NLN-AC accredited 11 students enrolled in Fall students enrolled in spring 2012

18 PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION Phase Community college partners expanded to include SWCC & TCC Riverside School of Professional Nursing added as a partner Program being promoted on web site 22 students enrolled in Fall 2012, daily inquiries
