3 Changing Demands aging population with complex health problems need for APNs with competencies to care for diverse population Faculty Shortage inadequate pipeline for nursing faculty who are needed to prepare nurses with advanced degrees IOM -The Future of Nursing (2010) provide models for seamless academic progression to higher educational levels increase the percent of nurses with a BSN to 80% by 2020 double number of nurses with doctorate by 2020 prepare nurses to lead change to advance health UMMC began offering the RN-MSN in 2009 with funding support from a 3-year HRSA grant. Students are admitted through two routes: post ADN and early entry at participating community colleges Early Entry (EE) RN-MSN collaborative partnership with HCC (2010) modeled after a successful history of partnerships with senior universities to offer a freshman early entry for traditional BSN Second partnership with Northwest Mississippi Community College was added (2011) to offer the EE RN-MSN to students in the ADN Large number of qualified applicants to the generic BSN not admitted due to limited slots Pool of highly qualified students in ADN who have ACTs and GPAs that are competitive with applicants to BSN Increasing number of students enrolled in ADN s with desire to pursue graduate education More 2 nd career students who want flexible, accessible routes to entry nursing s and graduate education Community College Recruits additional highly qualified students to the ADN because of the potential direct route to graduate nursing education Students more highly motivated to do well in ADN University Recruits highly qualified ADN graduates to the RN-MSN Opportunity to provide career counseling and advisement on prerequisites and preparation for graduate studies Early relationship building between students and faculty Between UMMC and partnering community colleges to offer the early entry RN-MSN, including: 1. Student support services provided by each school 2. Faculty and site coordinator responsibilities 3. Admission, progression, matriculation policies 4. Program marketing and recruitment activities ACT 21 GPA overall cumulative on college courses and on on nursing courses through first semester of full-time study in ADN Grade of C in each pre-requisite course Letter of endorsement from ADN director attesting to applicant s potential for graduate study Currently enrolled or completed RN-MSN prerequisite course work: hours of credit depending on semester enrolled 3

4 After first semester, UMMC sends all ADN students the RN-MSN Early Entry Program Application Instructions with clear criteria for eligibility so they can self-select Student completes online application and submits official ACT scores, official transcripts from all colleges attended, including grades from the first semester of the HCC ADN To retain status as an RN-MSN early entry student, the student must maintain: continuous full-time enrollment in the ADN overall cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 overall nursing GPA of 2.5 minimum grade of C in prerequisite courses and nursing courses All required prerequisite courses must be completed at the community college Upon receiving the ADN degree and meeting the following criteria the student will be directly admitted into the RN-MSN : Completion of all prerequisite courses Minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 Satisfactory scores on GRE Obtain RN licensure by end of first semester RN-MSN director coordinates early entry and works closely with HCC staff in planning and implementing EE on two campuses Reserve a percentage of seats in the RN-MSN for students enrolled in HCC ADN HCC students enroll in RN-MSN in June following graduation from ADN Early entry students have a guaranteed slot in the RN-MSN, but do not select a specific track initially Learn about advanced practice nursing roles and receive career counseling while in their ADN Declare 1 st and 2 nd choices for track selection in the spring prior to beginning the RN-MSN in June (NP, educator, administrator) Have opportunity to switch to a different track later on before track courses begin if slots available Coordinates application process for twice a year acceptance into EE (fall and spring) Reviews student grades at end of each semester with HCC site coordinator to determine eligibility to continue in Early Entry Meets with new student class each semester to share information about the RN-MSN and EE s First line of contact at UMMC for student questions about the RN-MSN and tracks and the ADN Early Entry route 4

Site coordinators meet with each EE student to develop plan of study for prerequisites Prerequisites are sequenced in the ADN curriculum where schedule allows without overloading the student, for example, in the summer Many EE students have already completed all or most of the prerequisites before enrolling in the ADN. Provides strong pool of masters students Highly motivated academic achievers in the ADN Accessible and flexible route for ADNs to obtain graduate degree Recruitment strategy for both community colleges and UMMC Lays the groundwork for concurrent course enrollment beginning in fall 2013 with several RN-MSN courses (e.g. writing course, portal to EBP) Helps to address our state needs for more advanced practice nurse leaders faculty, practitioners, administrators Choose partnerships that have a high probability for success At the onset, involve registrars and financial aid offices at each school to resolve questions about sharing transcripts, student data and any financial aid issues Consideration of prerequisites and how these will be scheduled for on-time enrollment in the RN-MSN 6
