Special Dietary Considerations for Lactating Mothers Eating healthy foods is especially important for you and your baby for as long as you are breastfeeding. During the time that you breastfeed your baby, you will need to eat about 500 extra calories each day and 15 extra grams of protein. You should try to drink 8 glasses of liquid every day, such as milk, water, fruit or vegetable juices. The calcium requirement during breastfeeding is the same as for non-lactating women: age 18 or younger, 1300 mg of calcium per day and age 19 and older, 1000 mg of calcium per day. Four cups of milk meets the nursing mother s daily calcium need. However, milk is not a requirement for breastfeeding mothers; you may talk to the lactation consultants about alternatives. It is usually recommended that you keep taking your prenatal vitamins unless your caregiver has asked you to stop. Contrary to popular belief, there are no foods that must be eaten or avoided by the breastfeeding mother. Moderation is the key. The natural variation in the mother s diet alters the flavor of her milk and this better prepares the baby for eating solids when they are older. Moderate intake of caffeine causes no problems for breastfeeding mothers. It is recommended that you limit yourself to 2 servings of caffeine/day. Do not drink alcohol if you breastfeed your baby because the alcohol crosses into the breast milk. Low calorie or fad diets are not recommended during breastfeeding. Your supply of breast milk could be decreased if you go on a weight reduction diet. Eating a healthy diet will help get you and your baby off to a good breastfeeding start.
