Ten percent of the staff piloted the Teacher Key Effectiveness System. In addition to using a work ethics rubric adopted by Central Georgia Technical College, the Career Academy implemented GA BEST. All students attending the Career Academy completed a career portfolio. The portfolio included modules covered in GA BEST. The portfolio was a part of the fulltime students exit interview. The program was initiated by Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler in January 2012. With business and industry input, the GDOL put together 10 standards as part of the GeorgiaBEST Program. Discipline and character, attendance and punctuality, work habits, teamwork, time management, attitude, communication skills, responsibility and organization are among the standards stressed as part of the program. Participating students earn one, two or three points per standard, depending on how well and consistently they exhibit the skill. To receive a certificate, participants must earn 25 out of a possible 30 points, including one in each category, plus achieve a specific grade point average (GPA).
