8 What are College Entrance Exams? SAT or ACT must be taken if planning to apply to a 4 year college Asset or Compass must be taken if planning to apply to a 2 year college These tests are usually taken for the first time during the Junior year
9 What is a GPA? GPA stands for Grade Point Average It is the average of all the grade point equivalents that a student has earned The final grade a student earns in a class also earns quality points that are used in the GPA calculation. NOT ALL CLASSES ARE WORTH THE SAME QUALITY POINTS!
10 What is a GPA? GPA is very important! It sums up a student s high school academic career in one number. It is the number used to determine STATE SCHOLARSHIP MONEY

12 What is a High School Transcript? A TRANSCRIPT is a record of a student s high school career, including: Courses taken Level of Course Grade Received Credit Earned GPA (Uniform GPA and Standard GPA) Class Rank

20 What Financial Aid is available for college? Need Based Grants Loans Work Study Merit Based State Scholarships Institutional Scholarships Private Foundations
21 What are South Carolina Merit Based Scholarships? These are provided in a tiered system to qualified South Carolina Residents, free from alcohol or drug convictions, with the following requirements: Palmetto Fellows Scholarship (towards a 4 year degree) 3.5 GPA and 1200 on SAT(CR and Math)/27 on ACT Top 6% of class (in the Sophomore, Junior or Senior year) Or on SAT (CR and Math) /32 ACT and 4.0 GPA Renewable with a 3.0 GPA and 30 hours up to $7,500 or $10,000 with Math & Science enhancements in 2 nd -4 th years! Life Scholarship (towards a 2 or 4 year degree) At least two of the three following: 1100 (CR and Math) on SAT/24 on ACT 3.0 GPA Top 30% of the class Renewable with a 3.0 GPA and 30 credit hours Hope Scholarship: (towards a 4 year degree) 3.0 GPA Non-renewable. Students can qualify for a Life Scholarship with a 3.0 GPA after the first year of college and 30 hours attained. Lottery Tuition Assistance: Enrollment in a 2-year technical college Minimum of 6 credit hours per semester Maintain a 2.0 GPA after 24 hours of credit up to $5000 or $7500 with Math & Science enhancements in 2 nd -4 th years! up to $2800 up to $864 /semester
