TECH BOOK GLOSSARY ACTIVE LEAF The primary door in a pair of doors (first to open, last to close) typically has an operable handle set and is fitted with lock or latch mechanism. ARCHITECTURAL HARDWARE Term applied to all hardware used in building construction but particularly that used on or in connection with doors, windows, cabinets and other moveable items. BACKPLATE Plate on which the moving parts of a handle or knob are mounted. BACKSET Distance from the leading edge of the door to the centre of the keyhole or door handle. BATHROOM LOCK Brochure page 55. A lock fitted to an internal door which has a spring latch operated by a handle or knob from either side and a privacy bolt operated by a small thumb turn from the inside. BOX STRIKE Lock or latch strike plate incorporating a box section to accept latch or sash bolt and covering the opening in the door frame. BS3621 British Standard covering lock security. The level of security strongly recommended by the police and many insurance companies. The standard includes many security features, ensuring the lock is resistant to attack by drill, saw or force. BUTT Brochure page 52. Type of hinge designed for morticing into the edge of the door and into the doorframe. CABIN HOOK Brochure page 24. Used to hold a door in the open position. Generally used to hold open double doors or French windows. Must not be used on doors designated as fire resisting. CASE The metal body of a lock or latch containing the mechanism. Please check case size is suitable for doors when ordering. CASEMENT WINDOW A window with a sash hung about a vertical axis by hinges at the side. CENTRES Vertical distance between the centre of the keyhole and the hole for the spindle. Usually 57mm in the UK and 72mm in Europe. CLAW BOLT A type of deadbolt having claws which swing out side ways when the bolt is shot. Usually fixed to sliding doors.

Two phosphor bronze washers are situated between each knuckle section; these have excellent wear qualities and thus greatly increase the life of the hinge. DEADLOCK Brochure page 54. A single bolt mortice lock set into edge of door which can be used to supplement a standard cylinder rim lock on a front door. Square ended bolt is operated by a key or by a thumb turn on the inside of the door. DOOR EDGE FLUSH PULL Brochure page 24. Used to retrieve a sliding door from its pocket. Fitted in the leading edge of the door. DOOR STOP Brochure page 24. A door stop should always be fitted where there is a risk of free swinging doors being opened against walls or furniture. Door stops should ideally be fitted a minimum of 75% of the door width away from the hinge, preferably as near to the leading edge as possible. Can be wall or floor mounted. DOUBLE CYLINDER (EURO PROFILE) Brochure page 54. Ensures controlled access (with key) from both sides of the door. Please specify door thickness when ordering. DOWEL SCREW Double ended screw used to face fix cabinet knob / hook into face of cabinet or wall. DUMMY SPINDLE Also known as Taylors Spindle. This is a rigid short spindle fixed to a round plate and is used to fix a dummy non operable half set of door knob or lever furniture. DUST BOX Morticed box section placed behind the lock or latch strike plate to mask raw wood latch or bolt recess in frame. DUST EXCLUDER SOCKET Brochure page 24. Fitted in floor or bottom of frame to keep socket clear of debris. A spring lifts the plate when bolt is not engaged. Please specify if fitting in wood or hardcore when ordering. ESCUTCHEON Protective surround plate fixed over keyhole. Designed to co-ordinate with door handle rose. Escutcheons are either slotted for lever locks, euro-profile for cylinder style locks or decorative drop type. Relevant escutcheons are shown with door handles in catalogue. ESPAGNOLETTE Brochure page 25. Also known as Cremone Bolt. A surface mounted device that, by the turn of the lever handle, locks the door into the frame at the top and bottom. Typically used on French doors / windows. Can be used as a pair or in conjunction with bolts on inactive door leaf. 5 lever lockable version available.

FANLIGHT The name given to a window over a door or the top light of some windows. FD30 A fire resisting door assembly able to resist integrity failure for at least 30 minutes. FD30S A fire resisting door assembly able to resist integrity failure and restrict the spread of ambient temperature or cold smoke for at least 30 minutes. FD60 A fire resisting door assembly able to resist integrity failure for at least 60 minutes. FD60S A fire resisting door assembly able to resist integrity failure and restrict the spread of ambient temperature or cold smoke for at least 60 minutes. FIXED LIGHT A window unit which does not open. FLUSH LEVER BOLT Brochure page 24. Usually fitted to double doors or French windows. Morticed into the face or leading edge. The lever throws the bolt into the door frame. Various lengths available. Generally longer bolt fitted at top of door, shorter bolt and dust excluder socket at bottom. FOLLOWER The part of the lock or latch which, when turned by a spindle, operates the latch bolt. The dimension of the square hole is 8mm to suit standard spindles. Bathroom locks may have a 5mm or 8mm dead bolt follower to suit the privacy set. FOREND Part of the lock of latch through which the bolt(s) protrude and by which the lock / latch is fixed to the door. FREE SWINGING When a door is moving on its hinges only and not under the influence of a door control (door closer etc). HINGE BOLT Security pin set into doorframe, top and bottom. Prevents entry by removing hinge pins. Highly recommended on external doors that open outwards. INACTIVE LEAF The secondary door in a pair of doors (last to open, first to close). The inactive leaf is often secured with flush or surface mounted bolts and typically has inoperable handles. LATCH Brochure page 55. A spring loaded tongue which secures the door closed but does not lock. LATCHBOLT A bolt having a beveled edge. Also known as a springbolt.

MORTICE A recess cut into the edge of a door to accept a mortice lock or latch. MORTICE SECURTIY BOLT Brochure page 55. Tubular dead bolt to provide additional security, operated by a universal star key. Available in two sizes to suit either door or window. MULTIPOINT LOCK Lock comprising of more than one locking point all interlinked and centrally controlled. NIGHTLATCH Either rim or mortice type latch which secures the door closed. Can be withdrawn by key from outside and by a knob or handle from inside. Often features a snib to hold the latch back when required. Often used in conjunction with a deadlock for extra security. OPENING LIGHT A window unit which opens. PARLIAMENT HINGE Brochure page 52. Perform the same function as projection hinges, however are more decorative. Parliament hinges are not as strong as projection hinges, door weight must be considered when ordering. PASSAGE Non-locking set with operable handles, typically used on doors that do not require security or privacy. PRE-BORE Generally used in North America where a 2-1/8 th inch hole is bored into the door. A tubular latch is then fitted with larger roses fixed back to back with through bolts. PROJECTION HINGE Brochure page 52. Used on doors that need to clear obstacles when fully opened to 180 degrees. PUSH BUTTON PRIVACY Ideal for bathroom / bedroom doors to provide privacy. Door is locked by pushing button on internal lever rose, to unlock, simply turn the lever as normal. Emergency release feature on external rose. Set is supplied with stainless steel privacy latch and pair of combination door levers. REBATE SET Pairs of doors often have rebated meeting stiles with 13mm or 25mm rebates. Mortice locks and latches fitted to these doors need rebate kits of the correct size to convert the forend to suit. RIM LOCK / LATCH A lock or latch that is surface mounted to the internal face of a door. Commonly used on ledged and braced style doors. ROSE Circular plate on which the moving parts of a handle or knob are mounted. Also available for our range of Cabinet knobs.

SASHLOCK Brochure page 54. A mortice lock containing both a latch (operated by door handles) and a bolt (operated by a key). SASH WINDOW A two piece window comprising of top and bottom sections which move independently of each other. SINGLE CYLINDER (EURO PROFILE) Brochure page 54. Opening from one side only (external side of door) are ideal for use in locations such as fire escape doors, where a high level of security is required on one side and controlled access on the other. Please specify door thickness when ordering. SKYLIGHT Top hung window opening out, usually in a sloping roof. SNIB Brochure page 12. Small knob which operates the bathroom privacy bolt or tubular bolt. Design and finish will co-ordinate with door handle. Also used to describe the button or switch on a nightlatch used to hold the latch tongue back or to stop the latch being operated when closed. SPINDLE Square steel bar connecting or joined to door levers or knobs. The function of the spindle is to rotate the latch follower to operate and withdraw the latch bolt. Turnstyle use a slotted spindle to ensure a tight fit. All Turnstyle handles are supplied with an 8 x 120mm spindle that can be cut to suit especially thin doors. For older latches and locks we can supply imperial sized spindles. Certain countries have latches / locks that operate with smaller spindles, please tell us when ordering if it is for outside the UK. STILE Also referred to as door frame. Commonly there is a standard stile or narrow stile. STRIKE PLATE Plate fixed to the door frame into which the bolt or latch shoots. Often with a shaped projection on one side to guide the latch tongue. TO PASS Often referred to as keyed alike. A number of locks which can be operated by the same key. THUMB TURN Brochure page 10. The turn used to operate a cylinder lock or privacy lock where a key is not required. THUMBTURN CYLINDER (EURO PROFILE) Brochure page 54. Also known as key and turn cylinder or single cylinder with thumb turn. Are ideal for locations that require controlled (keyed) access from one direction (externally) and easy access from another (thumb turn is fitted on internal face of door). Please specify door thickness when ordering.
