Four Year College Applications Where do I begin? Using Naviance during the college application process 2016 Fall Senior/Parent Presentation

Welcome Tonight is an overview of the college application process and how Naviance is used at Folsom High School as part of that process. This presentation will include important information about Letter of Recommendations, Transcripts, A-G Requirements, and New Updated FAFSA info. **This presentation is posted on Naviance and on FHS Counseling Webpage

7 Steps Step 1: Deciding What Schools You re Applying to Step 2: Adding to colleges I am applying to list Step 3: Determining what Application to Use Step 4: Completing and Submitting your College Apps Step 5: Requesting Letters of Recommendation Step 6: Requesting Transcripts Step 7: Update the Admissions Decision

Step 1: Decide What Schools You re Applying to It is recommended that you apply to 6 to 8 different colleges or universities. Your final college list should consist of approximately: 3 reach schools= A reach school is one where your academic credentials fall below the school s range for the average freshman. Reach schools are long-shots, but they should still be possible. If you have a 2.0 GPA, Harvard is not a reach school it s a dream. 3 match schools= A match school is one where your academic credentials fall well within (or even exceed) the school s range for the average freshman. There are no guarantees, but it s not unreasonable to be accepted to several of your match schools. 2 safety schools= A safety school is one where your academic credentials fall above the school s range for the average freshman. You can be reasonably certain that you will be admitted to your safety schools.

Step 1: University Profiles Reach School UCLA Match School San Diego State University Safety School CSU Bakersfield 97,115 56,921 7,391 17,522 (18%) 34% 4,595 (62%) Average SAT score 1880-2270 568 Math 544 Reading 490-590 Writing 1350 Average secondary school 4.12-4.3 3.69 3.2 Number of completed applications received: Number of applicants offered admission: GPA:

STEP 1 SuperMatch Tool- Naviance SuperMatch is a visually-based search that helps student find the right fit for college. Students select from a list of college decision factors and rank their importance. As the student makes selections, the best match colleges appear with information about why the college(s) is a good match. Students can save their searches and add colleges to the Colleges I m Thinking About list from here. SuperMatch is found under the COLLEGES tab in Naviance Additional Tools: College Match and College Compare

STEP 2: Adding to colleges I am applying to list Naviance is not a college application It is a delivery system for important documents including: academic transcript letters of recommendation counselor written evaluation It is critical to keep this list current and accurate or your documents may not be sent on time

STEP 2: Adding to colleges I am applying to list Log Into Naviance: http://connection.naviance.com/folsomhi Username/Password: Same as Powerschool Click Colleges Tab Click colleges I am applying to Enter the colleges and select submit colleges

STEP 2 Colleges added to your Naviance Page

STEP 2 What do Early Decision, Early Action, Regular Decision and Rolling Admissions mean?! Early Decision (ED): is an accelerated process in which students complete and submit their applications in October or November. Early decision is binding. A student may apply to only one college early. If accepted, a student must withdraw all other college applications. Early Action (EA): Early action is also an accelerated college application process in which students complete and submit their applications in November. Early action is not binding -- students are free to apply to other colleges. Although students receive early notification of an acceptance, they do not need to make a decision until the usual May 1 deadline. Regular Decision: This is the most common admission process. Applications for admission are due sometime between November 30 and January l5 at most selective colleges. Rolling Admission: students have a large window of time during which they can apply to a college or university. A college with rolling admission accepts applications for as long as spaces are available.

Step 3: Determining what Application to Use California Public Schools University of California (UC) Private and Out of State Common Application The Common App is a generic undergraduate college application that applicants may use to apply to any of the 500+ member colleges Non-Common Application Some colleges and universities have opted not to accept the Common Application. These school use their own typically online application. California State University (CSU) Naviance is only used to send FINAL transcript in May after graduation When a school accepts the Common App it is designated by this symbol When a non-common App school allows us to submit documents through Naviance, it is designated by these symbols.
