Fife Textile Centre Summer Schools 2012 Jeanette Sendler 3 Clinton Street, Newburgh, Fife, KY14 6DP www.textilecentre.co.uk info@hatinthecat.co.uk Tel: 01738 624 213 Mob: 07703023917 The Hat in the Cat enterprise has expanded from its studio shop premises in Bridgend, Perth and has returned to its roots in Newburgh, Fife in the shape of the Fife Textile Centre. Jeanette Sendler and her musician partner, Dave Ford moved into No. 3 Clinton Street in 2007. The whinstone building with its elegant arched windows is part of Newburgh s rich cultural history. Originally the Burgher Chapel, it has since then had several incarnations, notably as a Second World War drill hall for Polish troops, a potato merchant s store and an upholstery workshop. Before its recent renovation, the Fife Textile Centre was established as part of the Newburgh landscape by Jeanette and business partner Alison Mountain with three consecutive Summer schools, and although a little ramshackle, its unique atmosphere
and versatile accommodation soon proved to be a first class creative environment. By the spring of 2011, the building had been sensitively upgraded into a series of bright, open spaces. Master classes, delivered by the world s best artists and designers, will now take place throughout the year either in the Hat in the Cat Studio in Perth or the Fife Textile Centre. The town of Newburgh provides an inspiring and dramatic location for the Fife Textile Centre, nestling between steep craggy hills and the Tay estuary with its extensive reed beds, and benefitting from the east of Scotland s wide open skies and generous hours of sunshine. For students requiring overnight accommodation, a range of B&Bs and hotels is available to suite all tastes, and we can help find the right place for you. Delicious homemade lunches, with ingredients sourced locally where possible, are served in the comfortable dining area during master classes and summer schools. There is a lively social scene in Newburgh and the surrounding villages, with regular cinema screenings and musical events, and plenty of good places to eat locally. Spring Launch! We are planning a grand opening in March 2012, with a weekend of celebration to mark the event.

Cutting Through Time Also in is Jeanette Sendler s solo exhibition Cutting Through Time which takes place at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow. The exhibition runs from 4 th to 3rd March 2012. Jeanette Sendler s work is inspired by the complexity of the evolution of paper pattern cutting that began in Victorian times. This series of installations is placed in a fictitious tailor s studio. Across the space there will be fragments of flat pattern pieces evolving from two to three dimensional sculptural pieces, and a three dimensional mountain of body shapes, visualising the complexity for the maker, and the apparent madness or chaos to the untrained eye. The show will be supported by a full day symposium on Saturday 4th at which the artist will present an illustrated talk about the concepts and techniques which have informed the development of her installation. During the remainder of the day, selected makers will join the Curator, Laura Hamilton, in the presentation of sound-bite talks on various textile-related exhibitions and events hosted by the Collins Gallery over the past twenty four years. Participants will be invited to bring along pictures and objects taken and created at workshops to help us celebrate many happy experiences. The event will run from 10am until 4.30pm, with a buffet lunch and wine reception. Further details/booking forms will be available from the Collins and posted on the Collins Gallery website from 5 January onwards. Collins Gallery, Glasgow
