Summer Non-Profit Environmental Internships The Bald Head Island Conservancy Intern Program is open to rising juniors, seniors or recent graduates from any accredited college or university, with majors in biology, marine biology, environmental science, education, communications/marketing or a related course of study. The internship program is designed to provide young professionals with hands-on work experience in the conservation field at a non-profit organization. There are five concentrations for BHI Conservancy Intern Program: Communications Conservation Education Retail Sea Turtle Protection Background Founded in 1983, The BHI Conservancy s mission is to foster community-based barrier island conservation, preservation, and education. The BHI Conservancy provides diverse educational programs and activities for the island community (over 15,000 people/year) and serves as an environmental monitor for the island ecosystems. Bald Head Island is part of a 12,000-acre island complex (Smith Island Complex) located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River in southeastern North Carolina. Bald Head Island features an upscale residential community of approximately 1,100 homes, with approximately 200 permanent year-round residents. The island is accessible by a private passenger ferry from Southport, NC. Qualifications Rising juniors, seniors or recent graduates from any accredited college or university Majors in biology, marine biology, environmental science, education, marketing, communications or a related course of study Excellent listening and communications skills; good public speaking skills, comfortable speaking to diverse groups of people Computer proficiency with knowledge of MS Office applications (and Adobe Creative Suite for Communications position) Ability to be self-directed and work within a team environment Ability to work in physically challenging environment including long periods exposed in extreme temperatures and field conditions while keeping an upbeat personality Ability to lift 40 lbs Must possess a valid Driver s License CLEAN Background check is required before selection NOTE: Students selected for this internship position may wish to explore the possibility of planning a Directed Individual Study with an academic advisor from their school, in order to receive credit for activities conducted under this program.

Position Responsibilities Though job titles vary (i.e. Communications, Conservation, Education, Retail and Sea Turtles Interns) all summer interns will be crossed trained to assist in each concentration at various degrees. Assist with promoting the Conservancy s mission and sharing conservation messages around the island. For a description of the program visit bhic.org/sea-turtle-protection-program OTHER SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES AMONGST ALL INTERNS INCLUDE: Animal husbandry and the care and maintenance of animal enclosures and exhibits (terrestrial, freshwater, & saltwater), and classroom space Non-profit related duties such as assisting in the Turtle Central Gift Shop, Information Center, facilities maintenance, and the BHI Conservancy Office Promotion and practice of stewardship of the Conservancy s facilities, properties, and research equipment Assisting with special events including Turtle Trot 5K events, lectures, and Annual Picnic Interns will also conduct individual or group research projects that match their interests and the Conservancy s goals. The research projects should not only benefit the student, but also provide the island, residents, and researchers with invaluable knowledge of the island and its inhabitants. Students will be expected to complete the research project and present the results to the Conservancy staff and board at the end of the summer.

1. Communications Intern Description (1 Position) The Communications Specialist supervises the communication intern. The communication intern will assume the following responsibilities: 1. Assist with development of marketing strategies for promoting the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Execute these concepts and strategies through community outreach to on-island organizations, the general public, members, and donors 2. Develop content for and manage promotional materials including print and electronic newsletters, website and social media stories, media releases, island reports and other materials as needed. Conservation Intern Description (2-3 Positions) The Coastal Scientist supervises the conservation interns. The coastal conservation interns will assume the following responsibilities: 1. Conduct conservation-monitoring programs (mammal population surveys, aquifer water quality, dune health and creek water quality). For a description of each program visit www.bhic.org/conservation 2. Education Intern Description (5-8 Positions) The Coastal Educator supervises the education interns. The coastal education interns will assume the following responsibilities: 1. Retail Intern Description (1 Position) The Retail Manager supervises the retail intern. responsibilities: The retail intern will assume the following 1. Develop the gift shop as gateway to the organization and ensure gift shop has tools to communicate mission based activities 2. 5. Sea Turtle Intern Description (5-6 Positions) The Sea Turtle Program Coordinator supervises the sea turtle interns. The sea turtle interns will assume the following responsibilities: Compensation BHI Conservancy Summer Interns will receive a stipend of $400 per month; this amount is pre-tax. In addition to the stipend, shared living quarters in the BHI Conservancy dorm are provided, as well as utilities including wireless internet, parking for a vehicle at the Deep Point Marina, and a weekly ferry ticket for trips between the island and the mainland, valued at $560 a month. Interns must live in the Conservancy s dormitory during their service period (males and females will have separate bedrooms). Term 1. Conduct nightly beach patrols on foot or via all terrain vehicles in order to intercept, tag and monitor nesting sea turtles and their nests. For a description visit bhic.org/injured-wildlife The term of the summer intern is for a period of three months; starting on the weekend of May 13th/14th to August 13th 2017, though a day or two of flexibility may be allowed depending on academic schedules. Interns who have graduated may have the opportunity to extend their stay through Labor Day and can apply for the fall internship positions.
