3 General Internship Information Welcome to the 2015 Northern California Coastal Region Summer Internship program! Thank you for your interest in our internship program! This non-paid internship provides high school and college students with the opportunity to serve the American Red Cross, and through it, their local community. Every year, the Northern California Coastal Region of the Red Cross chooses several talented and motivated students with an interest in non-profit work for a variety of service areas, including market research, human resources, and fundraising. The program will run for a total duration of 8 weeks, from June 15th to August 7th, This document contains description of all the available internship positions across the Northern California Coastal Region. Each of the 4 Chapters in the region has their own distinct positions openings. If you are interested in applying for our internship program, please complete our online application located at All applications must be in by Friday, May 15, The internship program is highly competitive; a thorough selection process will be conducted to determine the best candidate for each position. 4 Santa Rosa Office Internship Opportunities Community Engagement Intern Disaster Services Intern The Disaster Cycle Services Community Engagement Intern will work closely with the Disaster Program Specialist to assist with planning, organization, logistics, and other support activities for the Home Fire Campaign and Community Engagement Activities. The three project areas that are the highest priorities will be: recruiting volunteers, identifying and contacting potential donors, and assisting with training and event planning. Requirements Work with Disaster Program Specialist to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks to prepare for upcoming Home Fire Campaign Events Create and maintain an inventory of potential donors Contact selected vendors to explain Red Cross needs and solicit engagement as an event donor or vendor Assist in recruitment and engagement of volunteers Contact community based organizations to determine potential for partnering with the Red Cross through the Home Fire Campaign Prepare printed materials and equipment for trainings and events Provide training assistance to the Disaster Program Specialist Collaborate on the design and execution of training and event logistics Other administrative and event planning tasks, as necessary Strong research, writing, and presentation skills Proficiency with Microsoft Office, and basic database experience preferred Well-organized and detail-oriented Interest in non-profit, social services, event planning or related fields Excellent verbal and written communication skills Some previous related work experience and/or relevant college level course work preferred Ability to work with a variety of people in changing situations 4
5 Oakland Office Internship Opportunities Youth Club Support Intern The Youth Club Support Intern will work primarily with the high school Red Cross Clubs located in Alameda County. With the school year having just finished, many high schools will have new volunteers in club officer positions. The summer is an opportunity to touch base with these new officers and get them thinking about the upcoming school year. By establishing a solid relationship between the club and the chapter, we can ensure that clubs start the school year on a strong foot. At the district level, the East Bay Youth Executive Board coordinators will also be transitioning. The Youth Executive Board is responsible for connecting individual Red Cross Clubs and providing support to clubs who need it. The Youth Club Support Intern will also work closely with the Youth Executive Board members to discuss their roles and develop a yearly calendar of activities. Outreach and establish strong communication with club officers Update Alameda County club officer contact list Brainstorm activities and projects with club officers Develop a yearly calendar of activities with each individual club Work with Youth Executive Board to map out regional youth events for the year Communicate with club officers and provide support as necessary Passion for working with youth Strong communication skills Organized Creative and flexible Driver s License 5
6 Volunteer Services HR Intern The Northern California Coastal Region will hire about 18 new AmeriCorps members throughout the summer to service in two separate programs within the Red Cross from August 2015 to July Volunteer Services HR Intern will assist with the hiring process for all open AmeriCorps positions. Note: position will start in late May instead of June 15 th. Outreach & advertisement for open AmeriCorps positions Maintain meticulous records of all applicants Review resumés and conduct interviews (phone and in-person) with potential candidates Resolve problems in paperwork Maintain good communication with applicants Help plan orientation for new hires Strong written & verbal communication skills Comfortable speaking on the phone Organized Creative and flexible Currently pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business or a related discipline; prior internship experience with Human Resources is a plus Blood Services Intern The Blood Services Intern will enhance the capacity of the American Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region to engage the local community in the blood services area. Reporting to the Business Development Manager, the intern in the Donor Recruitment Department will provide prospect research and market analysis for community groups to host blood drives. The intern will also assist in planning blood drives and other donor recruitment tasks. Conduct appropriate research to list of blood drive sponsors Proactively identify new tools and techniques for prospect research Provide program support to the Donor Recruitment Department 6

8 San Francisco Office Internship Opportunities Corporate Development Intern The Corporate Development Intern will enhance the capacity of the American Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region to engage the local corporate community in the mission of the organization. Reporting into the regional Corporate Development team, the intern will provide prospect research and market analysis for corporations in the four areas that make up our region: California Northwest, Bay Area, Silicon Valley and Central Coast. The intern will also produce concise but compelling reports to appropriately steward our current partners. Conduct appropriate research to build out corporate profiles and identify potential targets for cultivation Proactively identify new tools and techniques for prospect research Create corporate stewardship reports for current partners Help build competitive intelligence by conducting research on corporate philanthropy trends and activity, across industries and markets Provide program support to two Corporate Development Officers Intermediate Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet and Outlook experience Ability to categorize, organize, and present research Ability to document details in a process Ability to work independently and in a small team environment Organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously Assist with coordination and tracking of projects Strong verbal and written communication skills Highly motivated, organized, reliable, and detail-oriented Quick learner and capable of multitasking and asking questions Professional appearance and attitude Blood Services Intern The Blood Services Intern will enhance the capacity of the American Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region to engage the local community in the blood services area. 10 San Jose Office Internship Opportunities Communications Intern The Communications Intern will help support the Communications Department by working with the media and press. Assisting with writing press releases and public service announcements (PSAs) and pitching stories to the media Respond to media requests Assist with updates to web content, Facebook and Twitter pages, and Flickr photo library Research and write stories Maintain press lists, press clippings, and media logs Assist with promotion of special fundraising events As experience and ability permit, assist with basic graphic design and production work Help with routine office work such as filing and cleaning up lists Strong communication skills Strong writing ability (coursework in media and public relations preferred) Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office required; Adobe Creative Suite is a plus) Social media experience Able to complete projects on time and to receive feedback Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment Strong photography skills a plus Bilingual in Spanish and English Corporate Development Intern The Corporate Development Intern will enhance the capacity of the American Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region to engage the local corporate community in the mission of the organization. Collect and sort the chapter s historical materials and organize them for proper long-term storage using Red Cross methodology Create a series of permanent physical displays to highlight different aspects of the Red Cross s history in Santa Clara County Digitize some of the materials and create a series for #tbt (Throwback Thursday posts for social media, such as Facebook and Twitter) Interview some of our long-time volunteers and write stories about their experiences and contribution and the good things Red Cross has done over the years Good communicator with interviewing and AP writing skills Good at organizing projects, information, etc. 11

Reporting to the Disaster Services Workforce Placement and Retention Manager, the intern will assist in the process of making sure that our Workforce meets minimum training requirements for their chosen activities. Communicate with Disaster Responders who need training completed Assist volunteers with accessing online classes Help develop programs to motivate and reward volunteers to update training 12

The Home Fire Preparedness Intern will enhance the capacity of the American Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region to promote Home Fire Preparedness Campaign events in the future. Reporting to existing AmeriCorps and the Disaster Program Manager, the intern will acquire experience to organize a canvass and installation event in the month of August in Santa Clara County. The intern will also create a reproducible structure for future events, both large and small. Shadow existing AmeriCorps to support a July installation event Proactively identify new tools and techniques for future installations Successfully plan and execute an August installation event Help build sustainable systems to further the 5-year National Home Fire Preparedness Campaign Maintain existing partnerships with San Jose Fire Department and local volunteer organizations Facilitate and organize volunteer training sessions prior to event days. Provide program support to two AmeriCorps and the Disaster Programs Manager Intermediate Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet and Outlook experience Ability to categorize, organize, and assemble large scale events Ability to document details in a process Ability to work independently and in a small team environment 13

Assist in communications with Leadership Team, CADRE members, and the non-profit community Maintain CADRE database; assist members and agencies with updating their information.
