Monday, 12 July 2010,, (9:00-16:00) FULL DAY EXCURSION TO BLED (for accompanying persons) Often described as the Image of Paradise, the Alpine resort town of Bled will enchant you with its emerald-green lake, fairytale-like island and imposing castle reigning on top of a rocky cliff. This harmonious mix of beautiful nature, rich history and genuine hospitality has been attracting visitors for centuries. It was here that the Yugoslavia Royal Family once had a summer residence, later replaced by the summer residence of President Tito, which can still be seen by the lake. After an enjoyable drive, we board a traditional pletna boat and smoothly glide over the lake to visit the only Slovenian island. Its top is crowned with a little church, and you will have an opportunity to ring the mysterious wishing bell. A scenic road takes us around the lake and to the medieval castle perched high on a cliff. Built over a thousand years ago, it was once an unconquerable property of the Bishops of Brixen. Today, it attracts visitors with its museum, and demonstrations of old crafts and traditions, not to mention the breathtaking view of the surroundings. Before returning to Ljubljana, enjoy a stroll by the lake or treat yourself to the famous Bled cream-cake. WEDNESDAY EXCURSION, OPTION 1, 14 July HALF DAY EXCURSION TO POSTOJNA CAVE AND PREDJAMA CASTLE (14:00-19:30) The mesmerizing beauty of the Postojna Caves and the mysterious castle of Predjama rank among the most precious jewels of Slovenia. We will explore the wonderful underground world and excite our imagination in a striking medieval castle. It has taken millions of years for the clear waters of the River Pivka to create these 21km of underground labyrinth of passages, caverns and great halls, decorated with dripstones, translucent curtains and pillars of fascinating shapes and colours. After an unforgettable underground train ride to the heart of the cave system, experienced guides will accompany you on a walk through the subtly lit fairy-tale like underground world. You will glimpse a million years in one moment, admiring delicate spaghetti-like stalactites, massive pillars and other geological wonders. Back in the daylight, the trip will continue towards the astonishing castle of the robber knight Erasmus. For centuries dramatically hanging in over a 100-meter-high vertical cliff, it's waiting for you to enter and discover its secrets, legends and myths. Saturdayday, 17 July 2010 (9:00-19:00) FULL DAY EXCURSION TO Portorož and Piran Touch of Mediterranean Slovenia's coast charms with its inviting towns, rich history and clear sea. On our day at the seaside we visit the pretty fishing town of Izola, discover the beauties of the medieval town of Piran and the sunny Portorož. Passing through a varied landscape, we reach the sparkling Mediterranean. Izola was once a modest fishermen's village; today, it is a flourishing town with a lot of soul. We will stroll along its sunny promenade and through the charming maze of stone-paved streets.the gem of the Slovenian coast is the medieval Piran, tucked in between the sea and the mighty town walls. Strong links with Venice in the past are still reflected in the town s present appearance. The central square boasts eminent historical palaces, the birth house of the maestro Tartini, his monument and his name. We will walk up to the imposing Church of St. George with its Venetian-like bell tower to admire the view over the wonderful mosaic of roofs, streets and squares with the stunning backdrop of the bay. After the sightseeing, you will have time to discover the hidden corners of the town, wander along the promenade and sample some savoury Mediterranean cuisine. Portorož is a contrast to historic Piran, being mundane resort town whose lively atmosphere you can enjoy during free time. We will visit the ancient saltpans in Seča, which have been granted the status of a Natural Park. Harvesting the white gold from the sea has been an important source of income for the local people for over 700 years. We will follow in the footsteps of the salt pan workers, and visit the splendid museum house. In Piran we will sit in one of the coast restaurants to taste the sea delicacies.
