2 Barbati Barbati is one of the most popular regions on Corfu Island. It is lively place with the natural charm of the Greek landscape overlooking the sparkling Ionian Sea. Barbati is located on the scenic northeast coast of Corfu, just 20 km form Corfu Town, airport and port. The village is set at the foot of the highest mountain of Corfu, Pantokrator. The resort is set along one road. The steep olive grove covered slopes of Mount Pantokrator, leads down to the beach. Barbati is the Corfiot village of contrasts, attractive of mixed age people, people who love the tranquillity and people who love lively holidays, couples, friends and families. Barbati beach is one mile long pebbly and shingle beach, awarded the Blue Flag of the European community, offering safe and sheltered bathing, perfect for snorkelling. 3 from Corfu Town. A small road reaches the exquisite, but tiny, white shingle coves. Nissaki means little island in Greek. In the past, according to the old people, Nissaki was a small rocky island, which joined with the main land of the village through the years. Mitsos Taverna still stands on what used to be the little island. Nissaki is still an un-commercialized resort promising relaxing holidays. It is a tranquil village, ideal for family holidays, elderly couples and people who love traditional Greece. Young couples are also welcome as the area offers the choice for nightlife just a few kilometres further up, in Kassiopi or down to Ipsos. The majority of the resort consists of villas. The scenery is fabulous, as you can see the villages set amongst the rich vegetation on the hills of Mount Pantokrator. The sleepy Nissaki is a tranquil village offering to the visitors all the necessary facilities: tavernas, super markets, bars, gift shops, and tourist offices. Boat hire and water sports are available. Nissaki beach is a pebbly and clean beach. The visitors have the opportunity to enjoy their swimming or exploring the little coves around the area. It is ideal for the people who love snorkelling. Around Nissaki area, there are a lot of picturesque bays with scenic coastal walks, such as Kaminaki, Krouzeri, Agni and the beautiful horseshoe-shaped Kalami. In the other direction, you can reach Glyfa and Barbati. There is regular transportation by local bus. You can either go down the northeast coast ending in Corfu Town or up the northeast coast ending in the idyllic Kalami bay, the harbour resort of Kassiopi or San Stefanos. There are also traditional villages around Nissaki and Old Sinies is one of the deserted traditional villages on the hills of Mount Pantokrator. Standing at 914m, Pantokrator Mountain is the highest point on the island of Corfu. 5 Kaminaki The tiny seaside village of Kaminaki is an unspoiled treasure, a small and quiet village next to the sea, well protected by flourishing hills full with olive groves and cypress trees. Kaminaki is located at the northeast part of Corfu at about 22 km from Corfu town. It is accessible by a steep winding road. The few old-style stone houses supplement ideally the unique scenery. The fine shingle beach with its deep blue and green coloured sea is very attractive. There are sun beds and umbrellas for hire and sea sports activities and boat hire are available. The snorkelling is strongly suggested, as there are many rocks full of a big variety of fish on both sides of the beach. Not very far from the sea, there are coastal paths amidst the green scenery, leading to the charming bays of Krouzeri, Agni and picturesque Kalami. In Kaminaki there is one taverna just next to the beach and one more a little higher, with amazing views to all over the area. A mini market is also available for your basic shopping needs. 7 Kouloura It is a picturesque natural little harbour for small fishing boats neighbouring Kalami. It has a lovely feeling of exclusiveness, as there is no beach, the nearest is just a little further along at Houhoulio. Upon Kouloura s cape, an old estate stands since the 11th century, which now belongs to the Agnelli family. This small harbour is set against a backdrop of cypress and pine trees and there is only one taverna. There is an old chapel of Ag. Nicolas. Kerasia There are only a few villas and one taverna residing in this undeveloped area. It is very popular with excursion boats as it has a pleasant feeling of isolation. Agios Stephanos The traditional fishing village of Agios Stefanos is a quaint resort, set within the arms of a peaceful bay. 7 / 12

8 Agios Stephanos or Agios Stefanos (Sinion) is a typical traditional fishing village, which lies on Corfu s Northeast coast, surrounded by the tree-clad slopes of the hills, the crystal waters of the Ionian Sea and the idyllic sight of the harbour with the fishing boats. Agios Stephanos is situated on the Northeast coast of Corfu Island between Kerasia and Kassiopi, almost directly opposite from the other San Stephanos on the west side of Corfu, located between Sidari and Arillas. Agios Stephanos is 35 km from Corfu Town and just 3 km from renowned Kassiopi. It is also near to Sinies and for reasons of accuracy, it is called Agios Stephanos Sinion in order to avoid the confusion between the two Agios Stephanos villages. Agios Stephanos is a peaceful village and established as one of the first class resorts of Corfu Island. The majority of the accommodation is based in luxurious villas and high standard of complexes with private swimming pools. The resort is ideal for all kind of people who love the tranquility of a traditional Corfiot village: relaxing holidays for families, couples and romantic atmosphere set amongst stunning scenery. 9 Avlaki A shingle and sand beach. Set in a very underdeveloped area, with only a few tavernas and a windsurfing club. Kassiopi The village of Kassiopi lies 38 kilometres north of Corfu Town, opposite the Albanian coastline. This little picturesque fishing village has a population of approximately 1200 inhabitants. There are important ancient relics. In ancient times, there used to be a prehistoric settlement and a Corinthian city located here. The church in Kassiopi village is built on top of a temple, which was named Jupiter Cassius, the namesake of Kassiopi. In the 13th Century, the fortification of the headland above the harbour resulted in a castle being built by the Angevin rulers of Corfu ( ), which was considered one of the strongest castles of the Corfu countryside. The Venetians then destroyed the fortress and built their own and the ruins of this Venetian fortress can be seen today encircling the hillside, where it is supposed that the Emperor Nero stopped once. Kassiopi is the biggest village in the northeastern Corfu and the homonymous municipality of the area. Until recently Kassiopi was known as a traditional fishing village with a picturesque harbour. 9 / 12

10 Kassiopi is still a working fishing port, so you can sit and watch the boats coming in with the daily catch. The beaches are very small and pebbled, and are hidden away around the headland. The village has been developed to a very popular tourist resort, a pretty trendy place with many bars, tavernas, restaurants with particularly fresh fish thanks to fishermen, gift shops, supermarkets and A.T.M. machines. Being a lively resort, it is for those who are looking for a bit of life. This part of the typical Greek daytime resort turns into a trendy music center after dark. Teenagers, families, young couples and groups of friends who want life but also to enjoy the beauty of the North East of the island, are welcomed in Kassiopi. Kassiopi has a little of everything. Most of the beaches in Kassiopi are pebbly, small and hidden away around the headland in stunning secluded spots. There are two larger beaches further north - Kalamionas and Imerolia offering various watersports on offer. Kassiopi Accommodation Apraos - Kalamaki Apraos is a small and peaceful village in northern Corfu, built on the sea. 11 This is a small bay that has barely been developed except for a taverna and a scattering of villas. It has a sandy beach and the Andinioti Lagoon is nearby. The lagoon is a protected wildlife reserve, which attracts numerous species of birds, mammals, wild flowers and insects. Ano Perithia On the top slopes of Mount Pantokrator are the old ruins of farms and villages. Corfu s Byzantine people built them when they fled from the coastal villages after repeat raids on their houses by pirates. When everything had settled down, they then moved back to their original homes by the sea. A beautiful old church welcomes you into the village. When you stroll through the village, you get an eerie feeling as you see the abandoned houses with the shutters hanging off and the doors wide open. Walk through the cobbled streets and eventually you will be in the village square, where you will find two outdoor tavernas. Mount Pantokrator Standing at 906m, this is the highest point on the island of Corfu. The views from the summit 11 / 12

12 are unbelievable, you can photograph Albania, Mainland Greece and on a very clear day you can see Kefalonia. The monastery perched on the top of the mountain was built during the 17th Century and replaced the original church, which was constructed in 1347 by the neighbouring villagers. Within this dark and charming monastery there is a peaceful ambience as you wander around viewing the ancient icons and frescoes. 12 / 12
