Teacher Notes: Laura Bivona BA Human Movement Studies, Grad. Dip. Ed. Introduction This program delves into the different systems of the human body. It begins with an overview of the skeletal system, and then explores the muscular system including the major muscles involved in movement and types of muscle contraction. The structure and function of the cardio-respiratory system is explored and this includes a segment on gaseous exchange and the immediate effect of exercise on respiration. An explanation of the circulatory system will include the components of blood, the structure and function of the heart and veins, and blood pressure. Additionally, there is an explanation of the collaboration of these systems. Program Worksheet Before the Program 1. Brainstorm the systems of the body that you are aware of. 2. How might some of these systems work together? 3. Have you ever experienced a time when a body system did not work as it should (perhaps when you had an injury)? How did this impact on your performance in exercise but also in everyday life? - 3 -

During the Program 1. List two functions of the skeletal system. 2. What is the primary function of long bones? 3. What is the primary function of short bones? 4. List three movements that occur when muscles and joints work together. 5. Identify three synovial joints. 6. Identify two actions performed by muscles. 7. Name the three different types of contractions. - 4 -

8. Describe agonist muscles. 9. Describe antagonist muscles. 10. Approximately how many active muscles are there in the human body? 11. What does respiration involve? 12. What happens to the air breathed in at the nostrils? 13. What is the correct name for the wind pipe? 14. Describe the adaptation of the respiratory system to exercise. 15. Name the three parts of the circulatory system. 16. Identify the two veins that deliver blood to the heart from the rest of the body. 17. What is the primary function of the valves in the body? - 5 -

After the Program 1. Evaluate the effectiveness of the musculoskeletal system (skeleton and muscles) 2. Evaluate the effectiveness of the cardio-respiratory system (heart, blood, blood vessels and lungs) 3. Collect media articles about athletes with injuries. How do these injuries limit these athletes capacity to perform at their peak? - 6 -

Suggested Student Responses During the Program 1. List two functions of the skeletal system. Answers may include: Attachment Support Protection Production of blood cells 2. What is the primary function of long bones? They are the weight bearing bones that act as levers and help coordinate large muscle movements such as gross motor skills. 3. What is the primary function of short bones? They help the body coordinate small muscle movements such as fine motor skills 4. List three movements that occur when muscles and joints work together. Answers may include: Running Twisting Jumping Walking Bouncing Stretching Extending 5. Identify three synovial joints. Answers may include: Hip Elbow Knee Ankle Shoulder 6. Identify two actions performed by muscles. Contract (shorten) Relax (lengthen) 7. Name the three different types of contractions. Concentric Eccentric Isometric 8. Describe agonist muscles. Muscles that shorten or contract during a movement - 7 -

9. Describe antagonist muscles. Muscles that lengthen or relax during a movement 10. Approximately how many active muscles are there in the human body? Over 600 11. What does respiration involve? The breathing in of oxygen and the breathing out of carbon dioxide 12. What happens to the air breathed in at the nostrils? It is filtered, warmed and moistened 13. What is the correct name for the wind pipe? The trachea 14. Describe the adaptation of the respiratory system to exercise. More capillaries are formed around the alveoli therefore more oxygen is able to pass through into the bloodstream and more carbon dioxide is able to be transported from the bloodstream 15. Name the three parts of the circulatory system. The blood Heart Blood vessels 16. Identify the two veins that deliver blood to the heart from the rest of the body. The inferior and superior vena cava 17. What is the primary function of the valves in the body? Valves prevent the backflow of blood ensuring blood only travels in one direction - 8 -
