Q.1 Why do organisms need to take food? DIGITAL GURUKUL STUDY NOTES CHAPTER 1 NUTRITION IN PLANTS Ans. All organisms take food and utilise it to get energy for the growth and maintenance of their bodies. Q.2 Why do plants use the nitrogen present in soil? How is this nitrogen replenished in the soil? Ans. Plants cannot absorb nitrogen in gas form; they need it in soluble form. Therefore, they use the nitrogen present in soil to prepare proteins. Atmospheric nitrogen is fixed in soil by nitrogen -fixing bacteria such as Rhizobium, which live in the root nodules of leguminous plants such as gram, peas, beans, etc. In return, the plants provide food and shelter to the bacteria. Q.3 Define nutrition. Ans. Nutrition is the process in which an organism consumes food, which is then utilized by the body. Q.4 Distinguish between a parasite and a saprotroph. Ans. Organisms derive nutrition from the body of other living organisms (host) are parasites. E.g. Cuscata (amarbel) Organisms which organisms derive nutrition from dead and decaying organisms are called saprotrophs.e.g. Mushrooms Q.5 Why do plants need nitrogen? Ans. Plants need nitrogen to synthesize proteins. Q.6 What are insectivorous plants? Give an example. Ans. Insect-eating plants are known as insectivorous plants. Example: pitcher plant. Q.7 Choose the correct option from the following: Which part of the plant gets carbon dioxide from the air for photosynthesis. (a) root hair (b) stomata (c) leaf veins (d) sepals Ans. Stomata Q.8 Lichens is a composite of which two organisms? What type of nutrition relationship exists here? Ans. Two partners are Algae and Fungi. They exhibit symbiotic relationship. The fungus provides shelter, water and minerals to the alga and, in return, the alga provides food which it prepares by photosynthesis.

Q.9 Define Photosynthesis. Ans. The process of preparing food with the help of water, carbon dioxide, sunlight and chlorophyll in plants is called photosynthesis. Chlorophyll component present in leaves, in the presence of sunlight, converts Water and Carbon Dioxide into food. Q.10 Choose the right option. 1. Green plants are: a) herbivores b) autotrophs c) hetrotrophs d) omnivores 2. The tiny pores present in the leaves of the plants for exchange of gases are called (a) Stomata (b) Tracheae (c) Chloroplast (d) Spiracles 3. Rhizobium is an example of (a) Symbiosis (b) Parasites (c) Insectivorous (d) none of these 4. Which part of the plant gets carbon dioxide from the air for photosynthesis?

(a) root hair (b) stomata (c) leaf veins (d) sepals 5. Iodine used to detect presence of starch. It gives starch (a) red colour (b) green colour (c) blue-black colour (d) colourless appearance 6. Amarbel (Cuscata) is an example of: (a) autotrophs (b) parasite (c) saprotroph (d) host 7. The plant which traps and feeds on insects is: (a) cuscuta (b) china rose (c) pitcher plant (d) rose 8. Green plants use which of the following to prepare food? (a) Carnon Di Oxide (b) Sunlight (c) Water (d) All of these 9. Which of the following statements is NOT true? (a) Heterotrophs cannot prepare their own food. (b) Dodder is an example of parasite. (c) Saprophytes are green. (d) Pulses and Beans are legumes. 10. The main function of a leaf is: (a) To prepare food (b) To prevent disease (c) To support the plant (d) To give a proper shape 11. Which of the following is not an end product of photosynthesis?
